  1. I would appreciate any recommendations for myself and for my students. I recently went through a long bout of hoarseness and throat pain. It came at the end of a respiratory infection, but stuck around for several weeks after I had already taken the antibiotics and recovered from the infection. I went to see my ENT and had a scope done. He told me that my cords were functioning fine (no polyps, nodules or scarring), but he could see redness towards the back walls of my throat indicating inflammation from acid reflux. He also suspected that it was inflammation that left my throat in a more vulnerable state and helped to exacerbate the initial laryngitis into a prolonged state... I am recovered now, although from time to time I still feel a touch of irritation around my larynx and throat that's reminiscent of the pain I had during my illness. I have learned that I have very severe acid reflux. What is frustrating is that I was on strong medication for it (300mg Zantac a day) before I got ill. And it seemed under control at the time. My ENT's response to that was - although I was taking many measures to control my reflux, I may have a weak esophageal sphincter and therefore I would need to take even stronger measures to control it. I continue to try to make lifestyle/behavioral changes to reverse this issue, so I am not necessarily asking advice about remedies for reflux. (I'm well-read on all he acidic foods to avoid, weight-loss, putting the bed-on-stilts...and other than the weight-loss, I've done it all!) My question is: is there anything I can do or take to deal with the inflammation directly? It seems like, even if I have reduced the reflux, it's never reduced enough to allow my throat to recover completely from the irritation. Are there are lozenges or sprays that could help soothe the inflammation while still protecting my throat from dryness?
  2. I am pursuing continued education in vocal pedagogues and methodology. I am looking for certificate programs that have integrative and comprehensive methods based in voice science. I have been very interested in Jeanette LoVetri's Somatic Voicework program, but travel and finances are an issue for me at this time. Could there possibly be other programs of this quality that are being offered online where I could study with the option of obtaining certification at my own pace and means? The only other one I've considered was the Berkley School Of Music's online Teacher's certificate - but I don't get the impression that it compares to the Somatic Voicework program... Universities and colleges in Illinois only offer traditional vocal pedagogy graduate programs, but it would seem to be a waste of my time and precious financial resources since they mostly reject teaching Contemporary Commercial music...
  3. Hey - thanks so much! Then I'm just gonna keep pushing then! Take care!
  4. Thanks for the advice, ronws. I appreciate the "modern torch singer" description because it continues to help me mold a brand for myself. And I like your term - the "talent manufacturing" mills. I'm finishing up on my second album right now. We released some of the tracks it digitally last fall, but I'm still trying to work up a buzz about it. I do plan to just keep recording and promoting myself - and hopefully get some momentum going with my thing... I'm not sure why the other link didn't work, but here's a link my Facebook page with the gospel song on it: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Michele-Thomas/43260405644#!/video/video.php?v=1215040702664&subj=743445943 Thanks again! Hope to connect again with you soon! - M.
  5. So I've already posted about this today, but now I'm hoping that someone could give some helpful critique on my singing in two different styles. Gospel and jazz. Though gospel music is in my blood, jazz became my biggest passion particularly because of it's diversity and fusion of all musical styles - and because it was not a "belt-dominant" style which I thought my voice was better suited for. I still am discovering new things about my singing ability, but I would like to hear some thoughts from a more progressive thinking community of vocal coaches and singers about what they think is going on. I'm hoping to gain further insight into my own voice and thus being able to help my students more. Thanks again for any comments! - Michele T. Richard Smallwood's "Angels" (gospel) Stevie Wonder's "Where Were You When I Needed You?" (jazz)
