  1. The books I've been reading define head voice as when it resonates in a different area of your body. It's very possible I'm misinterpreting this though. And yes, I do find the nasality stuff useful. It's enabled me to sing more in tune and have better breath control. I'd prefer to get rid of it though.
  2. What makes it feel like head voice is the sensation of reverberation in my head rather than my chest.
  3. So recently I figured out how to sing in a head voice (or at least I believe so). I find that I can sing in tune and pleasantly much easier this way. However, it has a nasally unpleasant timbre, and I hate that. Is there anyway to remedy that? Here's a recording that I did. I think I'm doing quite well with regards to breath control, being in tune, etc. Just the timbre is something I don't like. EDIT: The song is A Losing Season by Sorry About Dresden, in case anyone is wondering.
  4. I normally don't do too many exercises, although recently i've begun doing octave scales. I've found that (or at least I think!) I have a range from about E2-G4, although middle C and above require an uncomfortable "head voice". I will upload some scales later on. I also do some breath control exercises recommended to me by Ron. Are there any in particular you would recommend? Also, I didn't play and sing simultaneously, it was recorded track by track and then mixed.
  5. I was browsing the PIX forum and came across the tab for "Free and Alone". So I learned it, and am quite happy with how it came out. Some comments and requests for criticism: I've been practicing pitch lately, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Definite improvement for some parts. Granted, the original singer isn't too talented but that's whatever. I can't get the first verse right. That's a problem. Breath control. It sounds breathy, not as much as I used to be but still. I kind of like that breathiness though, although that may not be popular. I'm able to sing louder and project more. Not very noticeable in the mix but putting it out there. And my playing was off today. B7 is a new chord to me, and as its x21202 it's a pain in the ass to switch to quickly.
  6. I'll definitely check out Arlo Guthrie. I'm a big fan of his father, Woody Guthrie. And I'll try to practice the breath control. I normally breathe abdominally anyway.
  7. What exactly is breath support? I'm unfamiliar with that. Also, I tried to record an alternate vocal take taking some of your tips. It's marginally better, I suppose I'll post it:
  8. I recorded this track by track, and it took a bit over 3 hours. It was my first time using cubase. I'm still using the crappy 8 dollar mic, but it sounds way better than recording everything in one go, and allows me to fix mess ups, which is nice. I'm still having trouble with going into some of the higher registers. Timing is also still a bit of an issue, but I think that's because it's my first time singing along with a prerecorded track (I recorded the guitar prior to the vocals). In full disclosure, I added some EQ to the vocal channel and some very very mild reverb. What do you think? How is my pitch? And any tips for the mixing/recording side of things? Also, I think I completely botched the second verse, so yeah.
  9. Singing it an octave lower was on purpose, to help it fit in better with my vocal range. But I will be taking your advice and trying to play with a metronome. Thanks.
  10. Listen to the original song Do the "wild shifts in tempo" correspond to the ones in the song? Or are they seperate from that?
  11. I'm becoming a lot more confident with my voice now. I've uploaded a couple takes. Playing with different vocal deliveries, trying to find a style that suits me the best and sounds the best. This is the most recent one and in my opinion the best sounding one (with regards to both the vocal delivery and the acoustic guitar). Also: my voice started cracking a bit during a beginning, sorry about that.
  12. So I've been practicing a fair bit, and I've recorded something that I'm fairly confident in. Here it is: EDIT: Please excuse the rude word at the end. I thought that it didn't record properly and got a little annoyed.
  13. Geez. That's a lot to take in. But it's honestly very encouraging. Thank you. So much.
  14. Amazingly I had to look up the lyrics to happy birthday (and then felt like an idiot when I saw what they were). Here you are. http://soundcloud.com/tisul/audio-recording-on-thursday-1 Edit: Also, I think you're spot on with the confidence thing. I have terrible confidence when it comes to singing.
