Foreigner - That was yesterday

Im happy for the guidance you guys provided for my previous recordings. This time I took on the challenge of Foreigner and That was yesterday which is a really tough song. Not in terms of range but in capturing the feeling of the song. Ive never been really happy with any of my recordings of this song though this is my best attempt so far. Lou just has such a unique voice and I guess it is hard to hear the song through another voice-colouring.

I use distortion here and there to emphasise certain parts and I guess in CVT-terms I sing in "curbing" most of the time.

Shoot me down!

That's a great rendition and your voice is strong on the louder parts. It sounded like, in the beginning, where you are singing with a softer volume that you were a little breathy. Second half, it sounded more supported on the "softer" parts. And wise choice in vowel for the transition into the song's bridge.

ronws

First verse is as you say probably not supported enough and therefore it also get a little pitchy at times.. nice input

analog

That is great to hear! My ENT said that I probably had som reflux going on so I am under medication right now and hopefully the results are beginning to show, knock on wood.

freddie,

nice job overall on a bitch of a song in the original key...nice.

i do it a half step down. i know how tough it is. (high tessitura.)

lou gramm is like an idol to me. everytime i talk to other singers we all agree his stuff is probably the most difficult rock vocal singing to do...especially if you have any hopes of sounding like he did in good technique. it's almost like you have to violate technique to get that vocal sound.

then to sing a set of his stuff boy oh boy (again for me)

even when i search youtube, there are only a handful of guys covering his stuff compared to steve perry covers. i study his vocals because i feel like to sing his songs well is a serious challenge for me and i love a challenge. so please let me know when you ever want to analize lou gramm...okay?

to me the sound that man gets and the power on the high notes truly amazes me.

Freddie, great job on this one. That's a very tough song and you did very well. Not many people can do it as well as you did. I think you should work a bit on improving your pitch and, for a few weeks, really work on not sliding up to notes as much (because that can often increase the chances of being pitchy). This is what Steven Fraser calls "onset" training - really working on the beginning of words and having them as perfect as you can - as opposed to begin the word somewhat week and then make it sound good after a few milliseconds. I hope you get what I mean. I'm not saying that you do this all the time - just every now and then, which might bother the occasional listener. And note that I'm being VERY picky in order to try to help you. Your pitch is already very good. I'm just suggesting that you get it to a god-like level ;) But also keep doing what you've been doing and make sure not to strain in your throat and you should get better and better. Have a nice day!

Great job dude! There were some really good moments in that recording and you have captured the emotion of the lyrics well. There were some pitch issues here and there but that can always be remedied. What a tough song to try and cover. Love your distortion where you added it here and there for effect. Overall a really good performance!

"GIDDYUP!"

Thanks for the comments.

Jonpall- I know what you mean. My onsets were alot worse a few years ago I would say - really sliding up into the notes rather than getting a spot on attack. Ill definitely pay more attention to this.

Videohere -One thing about Lou that Ive been thinking about is his pre and post 1981 voice. His sound seemed lighter after the 4-tour probably because he changed something in his singing. If you listen to bootlegs from say 1979-1981 he sounds completely destroyed! But still great.

I love that "just going all in for it" kind of singing.
