Suffered hearing loss from an alarm--have been singing off pitch ever since.

Hello,

I am 21 years old. I don't want to brag, but I've always been a good singer--I've won competitions and have been praised for my singing for all of my life. However, after a loud alarm blasted in my ear I noticed a change in my singing. I started hearing double--like there are two voices singing at once when I sing--and my ability to match pitch has suffered greatly. Now when I record myself singing I tend to be flat. I've never had a problem matching pitch before, and this severely distressing to me since I am in school for music and had every intention of being a professional singer. I've been told this by my vocal coach and anyone else listening to me singing, and I am devastated because this is what I was supposed to do with my life. This has been going on for a month.

Is there anything I can do to retrain myself to sing on pitch? I suffer from low-frequency hearing loss, which my audiologist says is difficult to impossible to correct with hearing aids. My vocal coach doesn't really have any ideas. Is there anyone here that has suffered from a similar type of hearing loss, or that has any tips on how to fix this?

Thanks.

You could try to isolate which ear is having the problem. You can either use an in ear monitor in one ear or the other to hear the music and your voice or use one noise canceling head phone to block the music/ noise and listen with the ear that is more in tune with your voice. Or cover one or other ear with your hand while singing and see which or any makes a difference.

Same coach before and after the change?

Did it happen before you started music school or after?

Is there any professional who knows your before and after pitch matching capability?

Why do we bother to comment? It is still just me and you answering a drive by question without response from the one asking the question. Occasionally we get reamed out by 2 cats for even trying be helpful. So, is there a point in continuing?

I believe so or I wouldn't comment at all.

How can you possibly think that any of these posts are inviting people back to the forum for quality conversations? You are basically insulting everyone and driving them away. If they did have in mind to rejoin this forum they would quickly change their minds. You are the troll.

This is not any form of attempt to reignight this forum. It is another example of tracking people down and trolling them. If you do want this or any other forum to thrive , YOU will stop insulting other members. Maybe in the past someone insulted you for no good reason, but from then on YOU have been the troll and inviting insults Upon yourself. The fault is not others anymore. It is you who are instigating it.

You been on the moon shine too?

If you read the full post I made on the geasluz forum that I posted a link to before in my letter to old time members

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/live-sound/1289609-act-busking-streets-3.html

You will realize that the constructive critisum given is a small mirror image of what we saw on the jimmyshitforbrains bullyboy club. Where as if you sing out side of the box and go above G#4 then its toy out of the pram and an attack that can not be argued because it has no logic. and when that argument is questioned (which is unconstructive critisum) the person who issued this goes quiet and all his fellow school ground bullyboys come out with comment like, I think the constructive critisum issued was very kindly put and put midaly IMHO. Go read the post MD as whet you will read there is a tiny tiny mirrow image of what we say at the jimmyshitforbrains

But as my freind Keirth Robberts said last night at the open mic night, what did I tell you at the start of the conversation, ignore anyone that claims to have anything to do with music because it is not a buissiness its just a childish little game. Sorry but still recovering from the donna kabab and moon shine last night so spelling not good

If your silly fooling is what brought him back and not the subject of "High Screaming" then I lay down my sword. I hope the two of you are happy fooling each other. It can be Felipe, Kicking tone and Sillydog. Forum.

That is called Sarcasm and I was hoping you would recognize the same silly shit for brains assi nine comment that you give others and wonder why they think you have insulted them. You should have been insulted because that it what I was  doing. Maybe give you a little diddydumb fooling that you may understand . but I guess you are not smart enough for that.... No matter we are all just 2 dimentional beings and have no emotions in the 3d world . nor do we have to communicate in a manor that could possibly be harmonieous and "In TUNE" with other 3 dimentional beings. Silly little didums may believe that to be a singer one must be able to sing something even close to being pleasant to other 3 dimentional beings. No just just call others sillylittle didums wearing emporers cloths and stand on street corners screaching out pathetic little yodels and call it singing. No point in listening to yourself and hearing the chirping and screaching where singing should be. Pitch doesn't matter...Just yell higher. Everyone knows that no matter how a note sounds it is still great if it is above G#5. That by itself shows the talent....Silly little screaching below G5 is shit anyway.Who cares how it sounds....People should be throwing money at you just becasuse you stood up and opened your emporers mouth.

Silly didums..who needs to practice and try to sound good when you have computer generated voice altering software. Who needs a pleasant conversations when all you come across is shit for brains ass wholes?

but its true MD! the higher pitched songs are what draws the crowd in

That is only ONE group of people. Some like the low growls of the blues, Some like country, some like pop, some like classical. The high notes are only impressive if they sound good and the rest of the song sounds good too. Otherwise it is noise even to the ones who like the high notes.

That group of people are anyone and any body passing on the street that like pop music

The most favable are

1. its a raining men (mixed-k register, top note G#5)

.2. the bee gees staying alive (falsetto, top note Eb5)

3. the bee gees/ Kayli manounge night fever (mixed k register, top note D5)

For a lot of people, their "group" is their universe, and it is pointless arguing the toss.

There has always been an undercurrent of fascination with extremes, but that may be more to do with freakishness value than music.

Personally, I can't stand the sound of 99 per cent of classical sopranos, and most rock singers in the upper 4th octave,  and 5th octave. That's just the way my ears and psychology works, and nothing to do with some argument that they "sound bad".

On the 'Who Sang The "Nessun Dorma" Climax The Best?' thread, where various singers sing "All''alba vincero! Vincero! Vincero!" (At dawn I will win! I will win! I will win!)...

....the critical part for me was the first bit, "All''alba vincero". It wasn't the highest note. For me, it is about the expression.

Most of them sing All''alba with a neutral energy, and then attack the vincero. They use that contrast to emphasize the "I will win!" and by using punch and conviction.

I think that Park Gi-Cheon sounds relatively lame in this regard. He seems to be only hitting the notes, without conveying the message strongly (my idea of the message, anyway).

Pavarotti, on the other hand, doesn't even need the contrast from neutral to energetic. He is already in forte on the All''alba, and spits out the vincero with great vim!

Gigli does it differently again. He dispenses with the physical emphasis, and goes for more of a "you'll see!" vibe -- more confident than punchy. But it works perfectly.

With classical music, of course, they keep quiet and cheer the whole thing at the end.

What we see with contemporary singing on TV (especially in those contest shows) is the use of cheerleaders. The only way that can work is by cheering things that are obvious or are cheap and cheerful. Cheerleading a subtlety won't work. You can't force a consensus around subtlety. So what gets reinforced are high notes, very low notes, length of note.

That's my general take.
