Hello people, my name is Peter and I am a rapper and a guitar player, this is my first post here so I would like to say hello to you all and wish you a good day :). I also plan to buy a keyboard and improve my singing. A year ago I had a huge problem singing in key. I knew when I was off, but couldn't hit right notes anyway. It was hard for me to sing the simpliest song. I even managed to sing F instead of for eg. C. I decided to train alot.

Now, after that amount of time I finally managed to improve my singing and I am able to sing a simple song almost perfectly when I hear vocals well or when there's an instrument that plays the vocal part. I just can sing in key if I hear the notes I need to sing.

The problem begins when I want to sing to a chord. Let's say someone plays a chord on a piano and there is no instrument playing the vocal part. How am I supposed to know which note I should hit out of those that the chord consists of? I am really lost then, if you are able to, please help me, it's so important for me.

Thank you very much, cheers!

It's a matter of knowing which interval the song begins on and which intervals come after that one. I'm usually pretty aware of which scale degree I'm on and what interval it is relative to the root of the chord being played. It's also important to identify the root of the chord being played and hear your note within the chord.

I would suggest to to start and study a bit music theory. Do you know to read notes? I think you should work on that direction. After learning a bit to recognize the different notes in a stave (lets say notes in G key) Then you should work by trying to read and sing the note. Every time you will sing a note in the stave you should go and check it on a keyboard (more comfortable than working with guitar I guess).

This is a way to work on accuracy on singing a melody. Start with it. If you would like more tips after reaching this goal you can write me if you like and I will suggest some more.

Good luck.

I really appreciate the support :). I know how to read notes (I don't do it at all, but I really know how to, I've been taught about it). I used this scale singing technique for a while (I mean this note singing with a keyboard) but I rarely did it with only my voice, coz I was really messing up those notes without the help of any instrument.

I did a whole training sequence for about 6h a day for 3 days and it gave me A LOT. Now I can hit notes almost instantly, but my problem is that during practice it's easy, but while I'm singing a song it's a whole different story. I need to hear a note to sing it, and when I hear only a chord I have no idea which note to sing. And if I had to sing a scale without the help of any instrument I would fail totally too, can you train this by singing scales?

Also, thank you for this offer of help, I am happy that there are many kind people here, I think I will stay on this forum for a longer time :D.

Listen, It depends much on the song itself. You can practice it this way: Take an easy song: for exp. "The house of the rising sun". this is kind of simple one (Harmonically). Take your guitar and first play the 1st chord in the original key. Lets say Dm. Play Dm and then try to start the song. So , sing the start , and then check if you started at the right key. (you should have a melody on notes so you can check). After you got it well, then try to start lets say with Em and than start again the melody. Then check it if you had it right. if you played Em that means the melody should start1 tone up. and So on.. Fm.. Gm... See how it goes...
