Hitting High notes and connecting to next octave

I practiced singing with a friend today and we noticed that my range starts straining from middle C to High C.

I also noticed that when I sing with more force, I am able to hit these high notes and I kind of found a place where it feels less strain on my throat and my high notes actually have a release to it.

My question is how can I get to the high notes without having to push and feeling strain? What exercises can I do? When I have the right technique and don't strain I can't hit the high notes, but when I strain, I can hit the high notes. Should I be using more air to hit high notes? Because I feel I can't hit them without using more air.

Also any advice on connecting transitioning into octaves would be appreciated.
