Finishing up school right now, so haven't had time to practice with Reaper at all. But next weekend I'll be done, so I'll start recording some practice rounds.

I got some problem to start a new topic and Adolph is kind enough to try a solve that issue. So is it ok to post my Highway star- training clip here?

It was a rainy morning today here in Finland and i had some time so i tryed this month challenge. I´m not too happy with the result, it´s a very hard song for me but here it is anyway

Big pat on the back to Pekka for stepping up and putting a recording out first! All recordings for the challenge, whether they're rough drafts or final versions, should go in here, so you weren't wrong to put it in here. It's good that this is a hard song for you. It will be a difficult song for others, including me, so we're all being challenged here. Don't worry about this not being to your standards. All final recordings have to be in by June 2nd PST, so you've got around 17 days to do something better.

Really good effort, Pekka. If I could suggest something. You have an awesome squeal on the first high note during the intro. Do that sound for the lyrics "I love it! I need it!" It will sound more beefy that way. I know you have the range. I just want to hear you use it.

Yeah, that inflection at the beginning surprised me. You've really been practicing.

Thanks ronws and GSoul82 :) and yes i agree that this " i love it, i need it... " part needs some extra "balls"  :D so i try to do it like it in the intro.

So, who's started? Where's everyone at? I haven't been able to sing much for the past week, because I've been sick, and my recording time is always limited. I'll likely have something at least rough sometime this week. I've already been thinking technique-wise how I'm going to approach this. I've pretty much decided I'm going to go Rock style with it.

Did a quick take today. Still very green to the whole mixing thing, so I was just playing around with it today.

Here's a super rough take: https://soundcloud.com/jabroni-1/highway-star

I was pretty happy with the scream in the beginning :)

I noticed that the volume on my vocals are inconsistent (sometimes louder, sometimes more quiet). Do you think I need to change the mic gain? Or just be more consistent with my vocal volume when singing?

I think you are almost there on the mix. Often times, singers are loud and soft depending on mic proximity. What I really liked was how clean your track sounded. So, what I would do is put compressor on it and then balance the volume with that of the backing track. You already have a good reverb on it and I would probably keep it at that. And yes, you have some neat "screams" in there that I think work well in this song.

Like you said, it's a rough take but you've got the pieces in all the right places and so I am not addressing pitch issues. Once you sing this like you wrote it, you have it solid.

Sounds Good Pekka and Jabroni.

I haven't had time to even think about this for a while. I am glad that this thread is still going strong. Hopefully we will get a few more people adding their versions of this soon.

I practiced a bit afterward, and I think I just need to be closer to the mic. As far as pitch goes, it's definitely off-pitch, so I'll try to work on that tomorrow. I think I'll just do a completely new take and work on compressing and balancing the volume. I think I understand now how a good mix and master can go a long way on bringing out the best in one's voice.

Thanks for giving it a listen ron and MDEW!

Round 2, different takes and I think it's a better mix too. I'm still using mostly presets since I don't know what the knobs do :P : https://soundcloud.com/jabroni-1/highway-star-take-2

By the way, here's the original vocals for the song as well as the organ track... I noticed there are a nice chain of effects there. I think it helps to hear the vocals without the other instruments to hear what effects are used.

Thanks for linking that, Jabroni. I had not realized that pretty much all of the vocal, and especially the chorus, was double or triple tracked.

Nice take, GSoul! It sounds like you used a lighter registration, very cool. It has a nice groove to it.

Thanks, J. Getting used to singing this type of music. I think I've just about found the balance with rasp.
