I heard the false folds were used to sing with rasp and grit. But how do I safely sing using the false folds? Does this involve squeezing the vocal cords together?? Thanks, guys. My larynx hurts from all that practice :(

I've been singing a lot of songs using grit and twang lately and you shouldn't experience any discomfort at all. The last thing you want to do is be straining to achieve that sound. It's all about placement and twanging should take tension AWAY not add it. Great support helps a ton too. What you DO want to do is to find where you can add the grit where you WANT to add it and then only use enough "extra" energy to achieve it and no more.

It's one of those things where it's much easier to show someone in person that to type the explanation.

Snax, I think you explained it very well. Made sense to me.

Btw I'm just starting to learn about this, but I'm getting better at pulling it off and can tell when i get a little too exuberant and do it wrong.
