  1. Yes, I agree that nobody can copy STEVE PERRY voice completely. But....I believe his vocal ability is good to be captured and vocalist can apply some of STEVE's singing licks/ placement/ emotion to build a better voice ourselves. Deen is a smoker, and STEVE PERRY didn't smoke, he said that in the same interview STEVE : ". Liquor is very bad, and smoking. I do not smoke - not pot very much anymore, or cigarettes. That is direct. The smoke is as hot as the flame and it goes right across your chords. What better drying agent than hot smoke and flame. "
  2. I WANNA JOIN too!! I have been thinking of start a topic as "WHAT MAKES STEVE PERRY SOUND SO GOOD"? and I thought I would be labelled as STEVE PERRY FANS CLUB fans, hahahhaha. So it is cool to talk about his abilities there..... I second with Wildcat, counter-tenors..in my opinion...is trained from baritone, I think I am a baritone (from my nomral speaking tone, and I am training to become a counter-tenor. I am recently doing a research of Steve's voice, and I noticed that..his singing voice is lighter than what we heard, AND HIS SINGING TONE ...is STRONGLY RELATED to his SPEAKING VOICE. from 0:36 -1:00, you can hear his speaking voice placement or onset is as high as his singing voice from 1:50 - the end IN THE SAME STUDIO, you can hear his singing voice quite light too. He did an interview years ago, and here's what he commented on his (STEVE PERRY) singing skills. 1) "I try to do everything I do with the least amount of effort. I try to think the sky is the limit on range." 2)There is that point, the threshold, where the normal voice crosses to falsetto. There is a way in which you make an edge on your voice the higher you get. The trick is to get so you can bridge the upper register of your normal voice to the lower register of your falsetto. I use silent H's on the vowels sometimes to get across that bridge. I guess, maybe his tone was what he intended to be. not 100% by gifted ability. P.S. I am really a huge fans of Steve and I got all his CDs.
  3. psychological pressure....is the best enemy of practising at home. A year ago, my neighbour saw me in the lobby and asked if I am the lead singer of a band (in fact she wanted to imply I practise at home). What I said ....was ....I am a bassist in the band. And I fact I am both the vocal and bass in the band. ahhahha But the fact is, once you can deal with psychological pressure, it will bring you to another level.
  4. I love this topic. Singing scale or Practising at home has been always my best enemy. I believe we all share the same believe "What if my neighbour hate/complain about me if I sing too loud?" Well, I believe that singing, even with an amp is not that big deal. If singing is annoying, I think practise PIANO/GUITAR can be annoying too. All my neighbours's children play Classical Piano, and I use this as a excuse to practise scale WITH AMP and ENHO! Last word, never practise before 7AM and after 11PM.
  5. I second that, from what I have seen, all methods can be discussed. One teacher told you his method in here, didnt mean that ONE METHOD is all~ LOL A lof of singers have more than one vocal coaches, it is simply because of the variety of modern music....which is really long story.... No matter what kind of difficlties u face, Billy, I am glad that you still keep on singing! Keep it up, dude!
  6. Glad to know that you are good now, James! send you one of your best sayings! You are the real deal, dude! You are still the real deal.
  7. EvilSoup, For your situation, I suggest you can try to get a decent singing program. If you wanna sing LIGHTER and HIGHER! I personally suggest Robert Lunte's program "The Four Pillars of Singing" you can get the preview from there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grkoc0kTqFw
  8. MERRY X"MAS EVERYBODY  Hi, staticsound, My name is Kevin and I'm going to share my experience on Internet lessons with Robert Lunte. Tell you guys my background...... I have been singing for almost 10 years and I had been searching decent singing programs for years before I got FOUR PILLARS for SINGING 3 years ago. Well, I can tell you, every lesson WORKS! And it worths every penny u spend. There are numerous pros from Robert Lunte's coaching, and I just want to highlight TWO MAJOR PROS here with you 1)His concentration I witnessed a lot of Voice Training in my life. During the lessons/ when you are singing, some teachers will have their breakfast, snacks, or tidy up the house, talk to somebody else, whatsoever! Yet, Robert's concentration's shocked me. Unlike some coaches I saw who will just give you a “OVERALL REVIEW” of your 5 mins passionate scale singing, Robert can tell you everything after the scale(for example: pinch, the level of Twang, when to bridge ETC. Even sometime I made a minor problem, maybe just for a half second, Rob can hear any mistake and give down-to earth suggestion and coaching right away. 2)the progress QUICK RESULT, and that's all. There are programs I tried which will improve your voice in one hand, but provide you some bad habit at the same time. For TVS 4 pillars, I never has this problem, but only improvement and I can singing completely healthy now. I hope these information will be useful to you Kevin
  9. Darkclaw 3000: please post a recording there soon, u know, getting a nice and healthy "CLEAN" tone is the foundation to acheive a rapsy voice. From what you mentioed, I predicted your Rapsy tone came from pressure of your tongue or anywhere. Anyway, looking forward to your audio.
  10. analog, I listened to your audio file. Good work, you sound quite like Ken in this exercise! smooth trasitition too.
  11. I played finger-style guitar too, classical guitar....but suck in this field too. Well, for those idol show and singing contest...I don't want to use the word "unfair", but I damn myself for don't know a better word. Rob, if you go to live concert no more, how can you experience other performaner's live singing ability? I have the same feeling and I have not been going to any live concert for more than an year.
  12. For the American accent thing, ummmm....in my country, whenever a comedian try to imtimate an American, the FIRSTTTT thing he/she does it TWANG! I admit that there are several elements to make a good Amercian accent, but for some people, Twang = American accent (P.S. - I personally dun agree with that LOL)
  13. joshual, good to hear you are on the track again! Cheers. Dun be discourage by short-term drawback cause even Michael Jordan will shot "AIRBALL" sometimes.
  14. In some interviews, I heard that Robert loves acoustic guitar, thx for your recommendation, Rob.
  15. it is so good that we are pointing out the differences between these 2 programs. Man.... 3 years ago, I thought that I can solve all the vocal range problems by mastering one of the program. For some singing style, yes! but for a modern vocalist, I think we hv to at least master 2 of them (some other skills too, to name a few). Joshual:cool:, if you want to achieve Richie Kotzen's voice, for such a "Bad A$$" nasty voice, I think you have to master Ken's program. For Chris Cornell, well, his top range sounds exactly like Robert Lunte, yet his major mid-voice are quite similiar with Ken Tamplin.
  16. And, I found something interesting. A lot of the successful singers in the music industry sing with only one of the above methods, I mean, it is rare to find singer to master both Chesty Belt and Head Voice. Like the new guy from Journey Arnel Pineda, he is King when he is singing belting style, but his head voice is a bit weak... In my opinion, Steve Perry and Chris Cornell are some of the singers who can manage both Robert's and Ken's method well.
  17. To add something, not only Robert is a true friend of life and a amazing vocal coach. He is someone who live with passion. If you read his posts on forum and watch his video clips over these 3-4 years, you will find he always want "renovation". In short, he always makes improvements no matter on teaching, inventing new singing methods, and even on speaking skills and body language, HD DVD in the future pilliar 2.0 etc!
  18. Hi everybody out there, God bless that there are finally someone to discuss how to work on these 2 outstanding vocal program. I personally think these 2 dvds are almost the best dvds we can get (we means who dun have a vocal coach). I bought both Robert's and Ken's DVD years ago and I have something to share with you. Joshual, for pushing things on Ken's DVD, I think Ken's apporach have some aspects of "PUSHING" and it is somehow his way to make the Wailing/Belting sound. If you watch his Intermediate DVD (not the CD), you will find that he demostate how to "Push", but he will also show us how to do the "relax" tone on the same exercise. If you lean your sound/ cut back the air (not a lot), I think you can reduce some of the pushing. Mark, thx for comparing Robert and Ken's method. I believe they provided us the best vocal instruction program, some of the reasons is that they tell us where is their vocal break and how they manage their whole singing range. About the Head Voice vs Belting things, I love Mark's defination "Ken will encourage you to move from chest register to head register as late as possible then from head register to chest register as early as possible. Robert will develop your head register and encourage you to move from chest to head register as early as possible and from head to chest as late as possible." To sum up, it is just a matter of taste. If you want to achieve a chesty belting voice like Eric Martin , I think Ken will be your pick. If you want some face-melting high head voice, go for Robert Lunte!!!!
  19. It's great to hear these tunes from MR.REAL DEAL - James! His voice is always powerful as a sword! I didn't finish listening all of them yet! And I would like to remark them later! That's the real deal man! For God's sake that you are in your 44, you sound much stronger than some young singer....like myself, HAHAH! Great job!
