  1. Adolph, I agree! And I dont think Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio or Queensryche is on that 'esteemed - cough- list" either...:(
  2. check this out, and bow down at 2:51 then there's always Dickinson.. and Tate.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp8sDwwRokY&feature=related sorry I dont know how to clip these... and there is Dio, Ann Wilson, i could go on and on. Vox which give me goosebumps :)
  3. ew ronws you are right, i got in a hurry on the "de-vah-ee-d" thing and didnt do a very good job of trying to spell it like one should sing it (sorry!), but i didnt realize he sang an ee right before the d..will have to go back and listen again, i might be doing it without realizing it too, or naaaat and this is so ironic, i've been trying to lose my tehxaaaaazzzzzzzz accent for so long....despise sappy super twangy country music, and i do apolize - dont want to hurt anyones feelings with that...but hey, i lived in afghanistian with my parents for 2.5 years as a pre-teen...we had 5 - 8 track tapes. No tv. Only VOA and BBC radio to listen to. and the occasional shipment of those huge VHS? tapes that the whole community came to see..saw Captains and Kings and Jaws like 27 times in a year i think? so, i kinda got an overdose of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, and others whose names i forget at the moment, but think even heavier twang than the previous and you'll understand.... so now i'm trying to relearn twang. its really quite amusing. I'm sure it'll be a metter of time before i start speaking with twang again, i can already feel it trying to creep into my thoughts, aggaHHHHHHH!!! heehee twang sounds like a great name for a BBQ sauce ronws. I'm gettin' hungry!!!
  4. ew, accomplishments!! I've learned SOOO much about support from posts on this site....grateful for that just had light bulb moments wrt the twang issue when reading recent posts on twang, as i couldn't figure out what it was, how it sounded, etc, until y'all said "Anastasia, Axel", and rows told me Geddy Lee too hallelujah Heck my ear is picking up "twang" from Bob Jovi now, but i didn't "pick it up " immediately after reading the posts. And i figured out you guys didn't mean that these singers were using twang for each and every note...i tried imitating them using twang for every note, another 'ah ha" moment. SO i've been obsessed with Linkin Parks "New Divide". Was trying to sing that in "full voice" I guess, thinking projection like an opera singer might use, and was blowing out my voice by repeat no. 3. Then read the twang posts Actually started liking what i heard when using twang where i thought i heard it, and after like 5 tries...(recording in the car with my 39 buck wal-mart digital recorder..) " then shifted resonance further back, ....changed "dIviiide" to davahhhde"....read a post on vowel modification, and had another 'ah ha" moment.... worked on the note change in "reeeuuuson", thinking down to up, (okay got that pretty consistently....my new mantra, keep tongue relaxed, pulled back gently, palette soft....over and over and over always no matter what...starting not to have to think about it so much, if i get out of kilter doing that it comes back on each breath.... been working a ton on allowing my larynx to rise (came along with the twang work!)...okay so i started with SLS and somewhere along the line thought my larynx had to be lowered always.....wow.... learned to trust the mic to do its job, (event though its crappy), better mic technique on "aaaaaahyes" (iow pullback so as to not blow my ears out on playback...) ew hey this is a great video, hadn't seen it, hope it comes through directly... woo hoo wee hee!!!!! this izzzz fun thanks all!!!!! :)
  5. hey cvineyard....i had similar problems...my vocal coach became my best friend, but i had to stop taking lessons from her. She was confused and criticized the chording? of songs i wanted to do like "Take hold of the Flame" etc. She only advocated pop and classical singing, and recognized virtually none of the terms I was bringing her from this site. Although a great "choir?" singer in her own right I just wasn't getting what i needed from her, couldn't understand what she was trying to tell me to do (support, relaxed tongue wise etc). Anyway, i KNEW i could do what my mind heard me doing, like I knew i could breathe...so i didn't give up. Kept reading the information here, got training material as I could and used it....and after much time (which could have been sped up tremendously if I had worked with one of the instructors here), have actually began to "get it", and more and more pieces keep falling into place its like "ah HA" that's what they meant!!! I still look forward to the day i can get even MORE training material and work with Jamie, James, Robert or etc....i prefer the rock style, but being a gal and loving the new symphonic metal thing, may need Mr. Stevens help too "Never Never never give up....." (Churchill....).....
  6. Videohere, yea I remember the lone ranger - and Tonto ronws and wildcat, thanks for the replies too, higher notes for me too, at the bridge of my nose or higher if i get into "whistle"....was curious as if i move the" image" of the mask up and down, towards the plane of the face, or back, while singing, the results do differ....Guess i gotta figure out what sound i like best? and what feels free but coordinated :)
  7. okay when imagining the inverted triangle and thinking up or down at low or high notes, - which has helped me a TON! - I am just wondering exactly where the bottom and top point of this triangle are supposed to be located within the mask? In my minds eye so to speak, the bottom is along the eyebrow area, point somewhere below the nose. And I'm assuming the mask is at the front of the skull, (approximately parallel to the line of the face) not further into the hard palatte area? am i overthinking this?
  8. My hubby, one of the best drummers I have ever heard, cut his teeth on Peart, passed away on mothers day, and is now jamming with Dio. His fav genre, one of his favorite Dio songs (for vox) was Dreamer.
  9. Hey there Jaime! Incredible workout ? Wow..! Got a question or two though, I once asked Jeannie Deva about singing while running, i believe she didnt recommend it, but cant remember specifically why?? But I have also read (somehwere?) that the Backstreet boys OR Nysnc also did some sort of running and singing ? What I find problematic is that I cant control impact induced vibrato while running/walking fast. I recorded myself during running, pitch was affected by the pace induced vibrato. Was i doing something wrong breath wise? Thanks for any comments....
  10. Heres a related question I think?? Practice: sitting or standing? I've gotten so used to practicing in the car, I can really feel my back ribs expand when pressed into the car seat. Not as much when standing. Plus - please forgive, "pinching a quarter" is easier sitting....(blush) does anyone have an opinion? Thanks :)
  11. Hi Mr. Steven, everybody... Neat in that just this week I figured out that I had to "back off" the "breath energy" to keep from "choking off" the air flow and hurting my larynx, sinuses, etc. I only do that when trying to oversing loud volumes, hadnt done that in a while but just got asked to join a new cover band, and was practicing at -show' volume and just hadnt figured out what I was doing wrong. but I didnt have the same terminology...I would have said that I needed to "dial back" in order to keep from "blowing out" my voice The way you put this Mr. Steve, makes more sense to me, and validates my "finding!" Thanks!
  12. Hi ya Chief! (aka Nightprowler) Yea, Xylitol and Sorbitol, both sugar alcohols are also available at your local health supplement stores like GNC, etc, or better yet, your privately owned "mom and pop" type herbal supplement stores possibly Hope you are doing well!!!!
  13. hey mpropelus, my daughter had strep and used to get white "rice granule looking" spots in her throat over and over again, and I got irritations from singing with incorrect techniques... what helped me (other than learning better techniques from the info on this website), and her: throat coat tea, elderberry extract, or zinc, collodial silver, echinica, olive leaf extract supplements, take your pick or rotate them..and "gargling" with a mouthwash containg "xylitol", available at your local health food store. Taste good and helps kill out the bacteria :)
  14. Hi there, Jeannie Deva has exercises that help loosen/relax the tounge..i believe its important to keep it relaxed other than that, dont have a clue :)
  15. hey rworsham_2000 i've learned its more about the vowels when vocalizing words had trouble making the transition myself from "warmups" to wores/phrases...do like you do in a warm up, la la ma ma na na. sing the vowel... and BWAHAHA on the LEMMY COMMENT MATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
  16. Have you guys heard of the "Iron Maidens"? Their former singer Aja, had an incredible voice, havent heard their new singer yet tho...all vids on this link are Aja singing... http://www.theironmaidens.com/demo/demo.html
  17. Houston is screamin'!!! hey Bruce is also a master at fencing, won many awards, I forget the details...but I took fencing in college "partially 'cause Bruce did" and because hey I like weapon arts, (also got a black belt in TKD with my daughter) and i also got my pilots license in high school....heehee now if i could just sing like a female version of "Sir" Bruce.... heehee I know Mr. Robert can help me with that...dont give up on me!!! I am closer than ever to starting Jaimes course!! and will never cease to learn!! oh yea, and my avatar just happens to be a pic of me singing Flight of Icarus. Poor form Peter.
  18. Wow what a wonderful story Jillian, congrats :)
  19. Hey i started with SS and loved it, I did each CD ten times before I moved on to the next one....then bought Jaime Venderas program, and hurricane Ike flooded us and delayed my starting his program. Getting close to starting his stuff now though, and will do Robert Luntes and Ms. Cross' after that Ancora Imparo...:)
  20. Does you ear "ring" when this happens?? Just curious Styles, I'm only a student, cant offer any advice, but this sounds unusual??
  21. mm, floating!! Dont know how many times ive heard that pharase, how long ive been practicing that technique. But I've had a problem 4-EVEr it seems at the beginning of a song. After the first phrase, i'd do "better", but the first phrase always gave me problems. Listening to some of Jaimes teaching, i realized I was taking a deep breath from the diaghbram, then "locking" the air down until the first note/word, and then trying to spin or float the air support...but the problem would continue till the next "breath" or phrase. Think I misunderstood "sip set spin" from Monohans book....
  22. JAAAAAaames!!! if I had known I would have watched!!!! Man what a kick eh!!! :)
  23. ew, Joanna, you made a very important point on the distilled water, I was told NEVER to use tap water for neti pot or other forms of sinus irrigation, or for that matter for steam inhalation. Puts all those wonderful chemicals the government provides to us right in the most sensitive part of our vocal mechanism.....but also, there are camps that differ on whether distilled water or bottled water (filtered by Reverse osmosis and distillation) is better I think either one of those would be better than the tap water....Chen, being that you are in houston, DONT use the tap water. The flouride and etc. concentrations in the water near the gulf coast are higher than in the north....
