  1. Thanks guys. I appreciate all the advice. I did have a couple of sessions with the Toronto SLS instructor, but i didn't even attempt that song back then. I'm just gonna go slowly at it with exercises and stick to songs in my chest for now (i play almost all originals) until I can actually do it properly.
  2. well I've been trying slowly and quietly to creak/squeak my way up but it just feels like im quietly distorting my vocal folds and it will get raw. :/
  3. well I've actually been doing those for about a year along with tons of other exercises from SLS and other singing lesson CDs. Like I said, all I've been able to do is pull up higher and higher.
  4. This is me trying it with just clean tone in head voice. http://www.speedyshare.com/510653340.html
  5. Well I can sing it with the "f" but it's just total head voice and sounds bad. Staley makes it sound like he's just saying it normally but it happens to be at Bb. And if you listen to the William DuVall version that I linked, he sings it with crazy tone that's not thin at all.
  6. And I tried those fry and siren things, but they dont translate into anything but just doing vocal fry at higher pitches it seems :/ Im still just flipping where the breaks are when doing them.
  7. What I kept hearing is that I have no cord compression or vocal cord closure once I get past C3
  8. well i can put twang on my voice, but its all head up there and sounds like a monty python woman's voice.
  9. I should probably say the point is that I can't hit those notes without wrecking myself. I can sing them in head voice with terrible open cords or sometimes pulling up, but when singing the song usually the transition from low verses to a high G# or something will wreck me. Even F#
  10. Hey guys, I was wondering what kind of technique Layne is using. It seems like he's just pulling up a lot, but is comfortable and warmed up enough in studio to do this. Is he in mix? Let me know Chorus of Man In The Box: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFWkPVHKwCY Chorus of Rooster (around 3:00): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpH5i3xD7tA Ab in Rain when I die (1:45ish) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMm0bpbOOkU Here's Man In The Box with the new singer who has better technique. How is he doing it so well??
  11. like this? http://www.speedyshare.com/319690895.html It really doesn't help me sing in the break though. I can get through the break, but if I sang anything around E to Bb above middle C, it would sound thin or just nasally and thin. I want it to SOUND like chest, pretty much like every pop or rock vocalist ever.
  12. This is me trying to sing F,F# above middle C. The only thing that sounds decent are the belts because I have no mixed register, it's all chest. http://www.speedyshare.com/865975594.html
  13. I'm trying to say sentences higher by semitones up from my usual D to Middle C range, but once I hit Middle C it becomes impossible to speak normally and it just makes me sound nasally and weird and tense.

  15. Well if I do it relaxed it just flips right from chest to head, when i add the fry on it I just end up pulling up my chest through the bridge all the way to Bb then flips :/
