  1. For those who are interested, here's a new song with the same band. I'm going for a more aggressive style here. I would love to hear what you think about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx3409kgkJY&feature=youtu.be
  2. Thanks! Your comments has made me determined in keeping this style and not changing. It has been a rocky road finding "my voice"...I've gone down many dead ends by trying to emulate other singers. Finally! But as they say, learn as long as you'll live..and you guys are a great inspiration!
  3. Why, thank you! What I've been trying to do the past three years is to get the thick and even sound through out the "mid-low" - "mid" - "mid-high range" by bringing more mass up in the register. Before, say three years ago, I used to find a more whiny tone in the "upper mid register" by pushing the voice. By just moving the resonance slightly back in the mouth and keeping that "chest sound" It feels more like "one" voice nowadays. Voice issues comes and goes...Im thinking its due to allergy or something. It usually goes away i I keep cool for a week or two Ronws - Joe Lynn Turner, wow. Well he sings with a similiar technique and style I suppose. Pretty much in line with the singers I mentioned above (Kelly Hansen, Lou Gramm).
  4. I was quite active on this forum a few years ago while searching for a remedy for a issue I had with my voice (unwanted rasp/fry). I'm right now involved in a aor/hard rock project called "Osukaru" which has previously released two critically acclaimed records. This fourth record goes under the title "Triumphant" and the following song is one of the singles taken from that particular album Singingwise it is kind of a midrange song. I try to keep a "fat" sound in the chorus by adding extra vocal fold mass. I'm aiming for a Kelly Hansen/Lou Gramm type of sound. How am I doing?
  5. haha yeah you are right ronws I did pronounce the "r" heavily in urgent! Didnt realise until now Good input ronws. Apart from this input...how does this voice configuration(slightly darker quality) stand against the previously posted clips. Personal/subjectively rooted opinions is what I need :)
  6. I think this singer songwriter style works best when the singer has his/her own personal voice. Not to adjusted to sound as perfect as possible. Dont get me wrong on that one though. But it makes it a little harder to judge. I think you could work on a little more support on the top notes to keep them a little more stable.
  7. As i wrote in the recent distortionthread over in the technique section I have have two different sensations when I produce distortion. I mainly use the one that I would call compression which is has a more strained feel to it(soundwise). The other sensation is more like Jens described distortion to me once. Like putting a lid on top of the voice. It is more aggressive but also more steady sounding and this is what you hear at "Baby Im a bad man" in good lovin gone bad towards the end. The reason for these two sensations are probably the underlying mode. The compressed type is when I use a heavy mix or curbing in cvt and the other one I generate from overdrive(cvt). I find "compressed-distortion" harder to achieve in my low registers. There I often use a slight amount of air to get it going. In general I use this distortion just for coloring with small bursts.
  8. Thanks for all advice! Once in a while one could use a little bit of guidance to keep things on track.
  9. How do I work to get rid of that habit? Edit: I think when I use the lower laryngeal position my throat is less pinched. I got this habit of using a very high laryngeal position when copying my favorite singers that may sound very "on the edge" but in reality are very open. So I think I developed a habit of singing on the very edge if you see with I mean. I often hear this about nasality but when I test to pinch my nose when singing my voice does not change. Guess it has to do with me creating nasal sounding harmonics with the high laryngeal position?
  10. Wow, so light and heady, yet so intense. It sounds bulletproof - technique-wise. For my personal taste, I would like something with a little more meaty quality. And more desperation! Cant get enough with desperation shining through the vocals in a song. Sometimes it comes with something not being totally perfect.
  11. Everybodys got a personal taste and that is in its own qualifying to comment, I would say. As I stated in another post. There is more to singing than what can be covered in terms of technique!
  12. I like this advice and it is probably the one thing I do when covering songs which make me get slightly off in my timing at times. Interesting comment on the John Waite quality Though I think something would have to have gone terribly wrong if I ended up with Tom Waits voice haha!
  13. This is what I need to hear! I guess the trick would be to find the balance between the sound colors and only add the very edge of each color as effect at times and otherwise try to stick to that balanced color.
  14. Im on the hunt for my ideal voice...still need som guidance now and then! So I got some questions for you. Do you think that my voice quality sound manufactured? Am I doing anything that is particularly uncomfortable for the listner(nasality, whinyness whatever it may be). The strongest/weakest aspects in my singing - if you can point out anything specific I think I may be placing the sound too much forward at times..which I think result in a kind of shapeless quality. Placing it further back and I start sounding something like Tom Jones...Im looking for the key spots in these songs where my tone could use some other placement Bad Company - Good Lovin' Gone Bad http://www.box.net/shared/k4hvffakr9 Foreigner - Juke Box Hero http://www.box.net/shared/0ch5z13dnu Bad English - When I See You Smile http://www.box.net/shared/pfkpupdbt6 Softer quality ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ EDIT http://www.box.net/shared/ua2yjmk4k7 I have uploaded three pieces of my voice right now. I have changed my voice colour quite a bit towards the darker/softer side. I would like to hear how you like this in relation to the earlier clips posted(Above the line).
  15. Sounds great for that type of music. Lovely vibrato Have you given up belting entirely? Mixing it with this voice quality would surely bring dynamics to your singing. On the other hand this song seem to really suite a complete light quality
  16. Thanks for the comments. Jonpall- I know what you mean. My onsets were alot worse a few years ago I would say - really sliding up into the notes rather than getting a spot on attack. Ill definitely pay more attention to this. Videohere -One thing about Lou that Ive been thinking about is his pre and post 1981 voice. His sound seemed lighter after the 4-tour probably because he changed something in his singing. If you listen to bootlegs from say 1979-1981 he sounds completely destroyed! But still great. I love that "just going all in for it" kind of singing.
  17. ronws First verse is as you say probably not supported enough and therefore it also get a little pitchy at times.. nice input analog That is great to hear! My ENT said that I probably had som reflux going on so I am under medication right now and hopefully the results are beginning to show, knock on wood.
  18. Im happy for the guidance you guys provided for my previous recordings. This time I took on the challenge of Foreigner and That was yesterday which is a really tough song. Not in terms of range but in capturing the feeling of the song. Ive never been really happy with any of my recordings of this song though this is my best attempt so far. Lou just has such a unique voice and I guess it is hard to hear the song through another voice-colouring. I use distortion here and there to emphasise certain parts and I guess in CVT-terms I sing in "curbing" most of the time. Shoot me down! http://www.box.net/shared/5ld07lsayt
  19. I did a take which is more overdrive-ish: http://www.box.net/shared/qsn8lr580u I believe this would be closer to an appropriate delivery.
  20. Martin, I do know CVT, and it is really nice that one can "map out" a song like how you suggest for the chorus! Before I read your post however, I did a retake on the chorus. Holding back the volume quite a bit and this is what came through: http://www.box.net/shared/9ossa8nzvg
  21. I cant specifically come up to something you should improve. Maybe to cut it loose just a slight bit more, just to make it more interesting. There is nothing to be insecure about!
  22. Your opinions is taken under consideration! Here is what ill do: I will record a few different approaches on how I can think of singing this style, and you tell me which one is closer to ideal because right now Im quite blinded.
  23. Nice input. I actually force really hard here, but it really does not hurt at all even though it takes alot more effort. I would say my volume on a scale 1-10 of my potential is around 9 here. I could drop it to a 5 or 6 and redo the recording that way and see if that would be more pleasing for the listener. Good input on the vibrato aswell, I know it can be used the way you describe, and can be used as camouflage. I actually really dont use much vibrato normally because of the sound which I tend to think of too "noble and operatic" and hell with it, I wanna sound rocknroll! In general to not oversing, is a good advice...Ill have that one in mind.
  24. It was lights not wheel in the sky!...But yes, i have now uploaded a take on LIGHTS and its right up there in the first post.
