  1. I never mind hearing from you I think I hear the twang (big improvement ! ). That's the mean thing that kinda distorts the sound a bit right ? I think I can have something like that going, though not to this extent, as I kinda stumbled upon something like this before recording Sam's Town. The rasp, I discovered I could do something qualifying as this, sometimes, but I have no real control on it lol, it kind of just happens appropriately. It doesn't sound like yours though, but I could be mistaken : I'm not a good judge for my voice (who is actually ?). For example, I find it absolutely terrible (but a lot more fun) when I'm above ~D4, yet, people I tend to trust tell me I'm not. Some even tell me I have a consistency of tone I don't quite think I have And then, of course, my family sometimes mocks me, though they have been less and less as of late. Which coincides with less and less falsetto, though it could be that we competed on this wii game I talked about in my first post >: But then, they're the ones hearing the strangest sounds I can produce, which are laugh worthy, actually.
  2. I thought about your idea of writing something, ronws : One day, maybe, but for now, I'm not quite there yet. Plus when I write "" songs "" it's honestly quite depressive, cynical and morbid, not quite the " Why do you waste my time ?!", more like " How come you don't you see there's no time to waste ?" I've tried my hands (my folds actually) at the curbmixycry, but it seems to wear my voice faster than forcing, so I think I'm not doing it properly, though there is one point that makes me wonder : when I listen to you, I hear a disctinct distortion on the onset of the note, which is exactly what happens when I'm wearing my voice. I tried a few approaches. A lot actually. Some feel better, others are tiring quickly. The sounds are a bit strange. I also think that I have to learn to cover for this specifically... As when I think I achieve something ok, some vowels, the Eh and Ah especially, seem to lose all resonnance and end up forced, strained and breathy, whereas uh, u, ooh ee and ih seem to be ok. I've tried basically 2 (well 4 actually but 1 is not worth mentioning, and the 4th I have no record of ) approaches. The first one feels like I'm stopping the breath from flowing with the throat, like I'm holding my breath, but at the throat level, trying to open it up a bit, and then, kinda, going through it. It wears me quick, ALTHOUGH I think I have noticed that the higher the volume, the easier to sustain (weird concept to me). The second is entirely through support, feels weird, sounds weird, like I was trying to squeeze air through a balloon's neck (or whatever the name, I hope you get the idea), but it's not wearing, though it was attempted on a kinda weared voice. The 3rd one is just falsetto and can just go die in a fire, and the 4th one was through feeling only, and thus I wasn't able to duplicate it. Used Patience as a guideline, because it seems to trigger the feeling easier. Plus I feel silly enough as is right now (), I'll record something else if you want. 1 (I think you can even hear the breath being stopped): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14571174/curb%20throat.mp3 1 bis (Technique 1 but lighter and with more volume): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14571174/Curb%201%20bis.mp3 2 : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14571174/curb%202%20support.mp3 3 (for the laugh) : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14571174/False%20cry.mp3 Oh yeah, the mic is yet another one similar to the first, I just didn't have access to anything else.
  3. No need to justify, I was just pointing what I thought could help you. A lot of people are like you, including me, I just realized I would have liked to develop my voice earlier than you, but then, I'm a little bit older too As to your lyrics, I have to confess, I don't always understand singers anyway, but it doesn't stop me from liking. I'll be sure to check the lyrics, though ! And trust me I just know how much 2.5 weeks can make. And sometimes, you enter a period, when you go through 2.5 months, and nothing seems to happen. Something you might wanna check is " Freemake video downloader ", which is a freeware that jonpall pointed out earlier. It takes youtube videos as mp3s. You can have some instrumentals/karaoke this way. It can be a bit puzzling, not having the familiar voice of the artist to follow. But when you manage to do it, it feels even better (and you don't feel traped as much in the author's voice and tone) ! Also, and this one is not singing related... You've left some clues so I'm wondering... Are you French or am I just in the wrong ? :p
  4. AH it works now It's good, but there is a distinct disconnect in your highest notes. It's kinda strange, but nothing too dramatic. I didn't hear anything problematic actually, though, sometimes, I can't understand what you're saying. Also, you can put up like 3689456 billion words a second, that's impressive. I listened to your first take on it, and it sounded like it was a bit strained, so whatever you did was a step in the right direction : This one is much better, keep up the good work :)
  5. The video wouldn't start, dear Mr 92. It's a shame, because I liked your Patience cover ;p
  6. ronws : what a great compliment, and advice too. Thank you Jonpall : I can only agree with you. I have tried this though. I think I can have something ok on a speaking level, but when I try to sing something with it, I'll just lose it. Maybe though, I should try to think about it by adding sound to the cry instead of adding cry to the sound ? Thank you for your advice too When I have both time and breathing room at home, I'll try to record something.
  7. Hi there, Been fighting sickness for the last three weeks, the coughing especially has been fairly persistent and annoying. I realized today the mic we got from buying a karaoke game for the wii the other day actually can be fitted on my laptop, so I decided to give it a shot. Erm.. So well, I don't know if it is because of practice or the mic, but I barely recognize my voice It's far far from perfect, but to my great pleasure, it seems that clapping rythms for a couple dozen minutes every week for the last month has been beneficial (or it's the mic, I'll never know). One take (first take actually). Only thing I did was to lower the background and level up the vocals. I'm not skilled enough with Audacity to do anything else anyway. There are a few cracks, but I think it'll come back to reason when the coughing will finally stop for good. Also, I don't know why there's that funny voice in the end. Well, no more words, here it is : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14571174/Sam%27s%20town%20cover.mp3 As usual, link to the actual song : As you can hear, it lacks something, and I don't really know what it is, and how to get it. I mean, I could shout it all out and it would probably still feel kinda weak (and I feel it's not a good idea anyway). Let's call it power, conviction, edge, or monkey. If you can help me find my monkey, I'll be forever gratefull to you (thankfull ?). On a side note, I have to thank Jonpall for pointing out this software that makes mp3 out of youtube videos, it's really a whole new world opening. I've tried Patience right away, though I'm far too impressed by his own take to dare posting it :p
  8. This song is HARD. Congrats on doing it. I liked your Patience cover more though, but I trust you, you'll nail it perfectly in no time :)
  9. You're there enough to me, but I know what it is to want perfection. And I recognise that, though I like it, I'm not a great fan of the genre, so there are things I won't hear. I listened to it twice and enjoyed it. Except for the part where I realized I don't know how to whistle properly anymore, but it has nothing to do with you :p
  10. I didn't have the right environment when I saw it in the thread to listen to it. This is now corrected and... I agree wholeheartedly. I could have written it myself :D
  11. I didn't expect the last scream and jumped in surprise lol. I liked it.
  12. Well done ronws And you're right, the new mic captures your voice so much better !
  13. You have a nice voice I think I hear some slightly pitchy notes, but it's not really something to worry about when you hear the rest.
  14. Sure, I'm not gonna use this site anymore as it's the second time there seems to have a problem with today :] http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14571174/SCOM.mp3 This one should work On a side note, I listened to it again and found it awful. Well, I'm here to improve anyway.
  15. Timetables have not been too kind with us lately, so no chorale for us yet. I've been working on stopping chestpulling by any means available to me. Sirens mostly. I've discovered a lot of things in the process. Notably that you can control where you want the sound to resonate, and that it has a big influence on a lot of things. I will have to work a lot on it sometimes, as I can't control it all the time yet. I've also learned that what I hear is not what other people would hear. I stated somewhere that I disliked sounding like a countertenor on the high notes after I kinda learned I could do something like bridgeing. Well, I recorded myself today, and I sound mostly equal to how I sound lower, at least on this record and to my ear. Doing this also taught me that, basically, singing requires energy. I was a bit angry and this feeling's energy supported me very well I don't have control everything right now, but still, I think that's the best take I've ever had at this song. So here it is, another attempt at Sweet Child o' Mine : http://www.2shared.com/audio/A_CFuP3u/SCOM.html There are a few questions that have arisen with this new way of doing, but they can wait a few more weeks :]
  16. You're too kind with me ! And I can't say I dislike it, but I'm not a fan of it either. The music's a bit too heavy/aggressive for my tastes. The billions of fans screaming and the loud music prevent me from hearing the nice chorus as acutely as I would like. But the guys are good !
  17. Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. I'll check it whenever I have some spare time. School's starting tomorrow so... And I need to be mostly alone. My family hates me for erm... " vocalizing ", and I hate dealing with their erm... Mocking. Given the feedback I have received from you and friends I sometimes wonder if my horrible mic does not enhance my voice or something. :| This may be part of the reason why I'm just at what you call a whisper. Interestingly enough, it seems way louder than my speaking voice, though, come to think of it, it may not. Seems like I'm trying to have the softer sound achievable, haha (I'm not, though, I even try to add some now. But it feels odd. To my ears I'm easily in the 'too much volume' department, and never in the 'not enough'). Last time I had a sort of surge of volume/power, it felt like my voice was piercing through something, trying to get out or escape, I don't know, it's hard to describe, but it was an interesting feeling. As for the vowel modifications, if they don't come spontaneously, I tend to forget them. I noticed I sometimes naturally do some on tricky parts. Seems to ease them quite a bit. I'm not familiar with it all yet though. On a side note, a friend of mine convinced me to try and join a choir (or chorus or chorale, I don't know which of these words is appropriate) of some sort. I don't really know what it will be about and in which section I'll end up in, as we have not yet decided which one we will go to, but I'm willing to give it a try. Can't hurt, and I should learn some things. At least, it should help me build some confidence ;p
  18. Overall, it's great. Seeing your eyes a bit more when you're singing would be better. But if it was your first time playing this song, then you are forgiven.
  19. Ok, I don't know the original version, and it's so very far from what I'm used to listen But wow, I think you nailed it. The low parts of your voice have so much power, and the " fragility " of your " run for your lives " really adds something to it. It's convincing. I want to run for my life when I hear it. You were a bit off the pitch on the " run to the hills " though, as ronws said. Once you've corrected it, it should be great :)
  20. Whatever I used to squeak the high wuthering out of my mouth sounds awful and I dislike it a lot. It did help reaching higher notes though. I don't intend on venturing there in this manner anymore, as it wasn't quite feeling right. I actually don't really intend to venture there anytime soon. Even if challenged. It's way higher than my current modest goals. But you bring good news. If it really was twang free, then I am not lost to the dark side of twang and can embrass it after I have burnt a thousand cackling ducks and quacking witches while checking anatomy. I should have known better, I never get anything right unless I check anatomy. Thanks. And I've only superficially approched the cry. It's not a sound I'm familiar with, but I'm learning a new thing everyday, so one day it will cling in place and be great. I'll think about it when I have some time.
