  1. Hey guys! I was in the mood to play and sing this song again. I'd like to know what you think. Also, my little brother was playing piano in another room, so try to ignore the random bits of piano that you might hear. https://app.box.com/s/jrsg1qtub3jq1yfw4icz
  2. Thanks for the feedback! I've been trying to get down the concept of support and actually applying it, but I just don't get it. I know how to breathe "with my diaphragm," but I don't know what to do with the breath afterwards. I've been told that support feels like there's a balloon in your stomach and you try to keep that expansion as you let air out. I've also heard that you're supposed to push down on your diaphragm to achieve support, and also that when you're supporting correctly, you shouldn't feel any sort of dramatic sensation. My voice teacher is trying to get me to support by breathing and singing energetically. When I do this, she says I'm supporting properly, but I don't feel any differently than if I'm not supporting. Are there any tips or exercises that can help me?
  3. So I was singing today and I discovered a really cool resonance in my soft palate. I think that is what my voice teacher and choir directors describe as a "round" or "open" resonance. It feels really cool to have the notes be able to ring. I wanted to record a song to see if I stumbled into an epiphany. I posted a cover of this song a few months ago and I'm going to give it another shot. Let me know what you guys think. https://www.box.com/s/togqan8znhluw7n3fe8v
  4. Its off of James Morrison's album Undiscovered. I really like him. He has a great voice. Unfortunately I had to lower the key of the song to be able to sing it decently.
  5. Thanks for the feedback! I'm not too familiar with this song, which is probably why it sounded like I was waiting for some chords and also why there wasn't much emotional delivery. Also, I was trying to sing this song with good tone, which most probably interfered with the performance aspect. Which parts would you have sung more intensely rather quietly like I did? Were they in the chorus? This recording was live.
  6. Thoughts? Sorry for the recording quality. My mic isn't the best. https://www.box.com/s/togqan8znhluw7n3fe8v
  7. Awesome! But is there another way to bridge? Or will my bridge strengthen if keep using the 'lift up pull back' method you talk about? I find that I have to lessen the breath pressure when I bridge or I'll have a break. Do I just have to gradually add on more substance?
  8. Is this what the exercise should sound like? It definitely allowed me to transition more easily. https://www.box.com/s/nk0b3ju9vaf6qtksttib
  9. I think I'm this is probably falsetto because it feels like it has no substance to it, but I would like to know what you guys think. I can siren without any audible breaks, but is that possible if I'm singing in falsetto? Could I be singing in head voice? If not, could working more on my falsetto and bridging help me find head voice? Here's a major scale on 'lah' and a siren. https://www.box.com/s/91yck6rwdvc793ug91xs
  10. I went back and listened to the recording, and yes, it is pretty pitchy. It definitely doesn't help that I don't sing this song frequently. It was a very spur of the moment thing. I would like to think that I can be more in pitch even if I don't know the song in and out, but hey, I can work on it. I have trouble being loose in my high range. I feel anxious whenever I sing up there because I'm afraid my voice is going to break. Any tips? Or maybe the key is just too high.
  11. I was in the mood of recording 9 Crimes tonight. So tell me what you guys think. https://www.box.com/s/3e98a81e4b06f6611f7f
  12. Wow. Thanks for the kind words . I never thought that anyone would say that I should put this song out. I have been thinking about putting out an album, but I want to get a few more songs together first. I have a bit of writer's block. I've never been a big lyrics person, but I'm trying to change that. I guess I've never really noticed that this site is metal oriented. I don't browse too deeply. I've always thought that this section of the forum would be filled with covers of difficult-to-sing songs or originals. I agree with your reasons, and have actually been guilty of some of them. Thank you again for responding, and with such strong opinions (in a good way). P.S. I've asked friends to classify the genre of this song, and I sort of like your description of R&B/folk. However, I would say it's more R&B/alternative/indie, and maybe some pop in there. I like trying to classify genres of "odd" songs. P.S.S. The soup can mix with the vocals were unintentional. It's merely a byproduct my crappy headset that I used to record the vocals, haha.
  13. Thanks for the feedback . Yeah, my microphone isn't great. It's a cheap headset mic from Walmart. I'm also not very knowledgeable about mic positions when recording (I recorded it in one take), so I placed the mic closer to my mouth than my guitar. I think I took away something different from you from the original. I felt that it was a song more filled with hope, with a underlying feeling of sorrow that surfaced here and there. But I was a bit bright. I was experimenting with getting a forward sound (maybe twang? I'm not sure) without smiling.
  14. Here's my take on a classic Death Cab song. What do you guys think? https://www.box.com/s/42580e5c62258fdae4af
  15. I just recorded an original song, and I'm curious what you guys think. The vocals are first take, so there are a few pitchy spots. Critique me as harshly as possible it's the best way for me to improve. https://www.box.com/s/f4b0657e46fcae882081
  16. My teacher's given me two exercises. The first one is to breath in for 5 counts, hold it for 5 counts, and then exhale for five counts and repeat without pause. She also told me that when I get comfortable with 5 counts, then I should increase to 6, etc. The second exercise is to breath in and make a 'ssss' or 'ffffff' noise while putting my hands right below my ribcage on the sides. And about the vibrato, I actually don't have vibrato and don't know how to do it. My teacher has told me that vibrato comes with complete vocal balance, which I assume I haven't gotten to yet. Should I just keep working on support and wait for vibrato to come?
  17. We'll, I've had another lesson with my teacher and she's given me some stuff to work on. I rerecorded somewhere over the rainbow and also a siren/slide thing. I think they're supported but I'm not sure. I'm also wondering if my octave slide is transitioning to falsetto. Also, Bob, yesterday when I was singing, I didn't exactly have the feeling that I was using barely any air, but I found it pretty easy. I'm guessing that's a sign that I was supporting at least somewhat, right? Somewhere over the rainbow http://www.box.net/shared/em2un3rk3e Octave slide http://www.box.net/shared/xioofz5uj7
  18. I've been thinking, and I realized that I don't know the difference between a supported and an unsupported sound. I had my teacher demonstrate for me, but all I heard was a small difference in volume and fullness of tone. I thought that a supported sound is supposed to sound a lot more different than an unsupported sound? Although my teacher did say that she had difficulty trying to sing in an unsupported way. Do you guys have an clips to compare the two? I would appreciate it.
  19. A couple more questions, my teacher told me that trying to keep my lower stomach expanded while singing would initiate support but also said that my abs shouldn't be tense. I find that when I try to keep my lower stomach expanded, my abs are engaged, but not necessarily rock hard. Is this alright? My next question is one about vocal analysis. In Another One Bites The Dust from 1:11-1:30, how is Freddie producing the sound? Is he belting?
  20. Thanks for the feedback guys! And to be honest, I've been trying to work on breath support, but I just don't really get it. When I am supporting correctly, I never know it. Do you guys have any tips for knowing when you're supporting correctly (sensations and such)? And Robert, The last descending line is partially in falsetto. I start in falsetto on the D4 and then switch to chest on the Bb.
  21. I've had singing lessons for almost a year now. My tone and control has improved quite a bit, but not my range. My range is G2 to D4-E4, but I need to yell to hit E4. I've browsed around this forum and read a lot of bridging or overdrive (pulling chest?) and am wonder how to extend my range. Would working on pulling chest be an unsafe and or unreliable way to gain range? Also at this point, I'm not sure if I'm using falsetto or have accessed my head voice. I've included a portion of Somewhere over the rainbow. I just recorded it live, so forgive any mistakes. http://www.box.net/shared/zcgi88e138
