  1. On average it takes someone who has gotten to elite level in their chosen field between 5000 and 10000 hours of practice, most importantly during what psychologists call 'critical periods' (basically from birth up until about 8 years old). Take Vanessa May on violin, or Elton John on piano for example. As humans we are born with one thing that separates us from all other species - language. It's ingrained within us biologically and requires only that - during critical periods - we are exposed to it in order to learn it. Suffice to say, if you supplement that with 'training' (spelling lessons, english lessons, reading etc...) you will become awesome at language - as we all are here. It's certainly the case that some people are born with a genetic advantage (say, good hand-eye co-ordination, or a fast runner), but the cross-over into greatness would need training. It's the old 'nature vs nurture' debate. It's mostly nurture in most cases aside from language development, to put it broadly and crudely.
  2. Can the same thing be done with a half full or 3/4 full bottle of water? It's something i've played around with before that seems like a similar principle to the straw thing...?
  3. The only problem with 'the swinger' is that i tend to end up dancing to it rather than singing to it!
  4. Thanks for the positive comments, very kind of you guys to take a listen! The recording, as i say, is a couple years old now and i've been doing pillars/lessons - admittedly a bit on and off - since about january time. Nadine, i think if i sang this today it wouldn't be much different at all, as the top note is E4, which is basically my top chest note (depends in the vowel, how warmed up my voice is etc.. but generally it's either D#4 or E4). There's the odd note which isn't 100% on pitch and i'd probably add some harmonies here and there, but i'm not sure there'd be much difference on this particular song. Again, thanks for commenting. :)
  5. This is a track of mine, written about 2 years ago, before i'd had any lessons. I've now got Pillars and take Skype lessons with Rob, and have a bunch of new songs in the pipeline where the melody lines go much higher. Im hoping within the next few months, i'll be able to post some new songs demonstrating good progress with my voice. So, until then, here's me! Any comments - positive or negative - would be be greatly welcome! Cheers, Ryan
  6. A few things... Axl didn't bite a female security guard in sweden, it was a male security guard. Slash's book is riddled with inaccuracies. Steven Adler is an even less reliable source on anything (for obvious reasons, frankly). As for the RARHOF... It's a load of gash, voted for by board members and not fans. Credit to Axl for not going, considering it was basically a lose-lose situation for him. I've actually met him. He was very cool and funny. As for his voice, he now sounds very similar to how he did back in the AFD days. The UYI tour took it's toll on his voice because, as he stated himself somewhere, he was often shouting due to not hearing the tracks too well. Plus he smoked, and now doesn't. Here's some cool performances, old and new: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft3bfJnIQB0 this one is just awesome... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrBndJEGev8&lr=1
  7. jonpall, those sirens are both kick-ass, though i personally prefer the meatier first one. That's just a preference as my favourite vocalists have that full, strong, 'chesty' sound throughout their range. Cool stuff, hopefully i'll get to a similar level soon!
