  1. Thanks for all the advice, yeah hard work doesn't come naturally for me even though I want to believe it does. I'm going to work better and harder. "Do not fool yourself either into throwing practice time away you need to practice right and know that it is right so you dont waste your 10000 hours." -Daniel So much agreement going on here lol
  2. Hi, just ranting, but do any of you get mad that you're singing isn't as good as you want it to be? What do you do about it? Sometimes, honestly, i don't even know how to describe it, I'm not great with words, but I just feel like kind of lost and sad, and othertimes I just want to *explicit* SCREAM and just scream at everything but then I"m training my voice so if I do scream, it will *explicit* screw up my voice, so I just take a stick and beat the crap out of my punching bag. I'm really not trying to sound violent here, but this is honestly what I'm feeling.
  3. Am I supposed to be able to sing from head voice to chest voice when going down the scale? It's easy enough doing it upwards but I have to slow down the scale to get to my chest voice when I just use my head voice
  4. When I sing up the scale, it gets to the point eventually when it's not in my comfortable range that my mind starts tensing up, literally it feels like my brain is straining for that note. Has anyone felt that "mind tense"? Is there any way to fix this other than telling yourself to relax and let the note come to you?
  5. Vowel exercises up the scale, lip trills, mums...I record myself at the end of every practice to hear what I do wrong and I noticed these things that I had trouble with but I can fix. I've been recently working on the vowels a lot since I want to get notes on pitch and have that freedom when singing up and down.
  6. Where does it sound like I want to be "spoon fed", I'm asking advice from people who have been doing more than me. I want to hear what people have tried and worked for them and whatever they can tell me so I can learn from them and try on my own.
  7. Hi there!!!!! I've been doing a lot of vocal training recently and I've gotten pretty good mentality wise. I noticed that when I sing, if I get really into this song, that is when I'm at my best. My vocal technique is not where I want it to be(there is always room for improvement) but it's better than when I just "sing" and not feel the song. I am still a beginner but I narrowed down the things I believe I need to work on. Freedom when singing - This is pretty easy once I get my voice in the right area even though I might not be able to hit exactly on pitch. Getting voice into the proper head place not stuck in throat, I believe this is having enough power to get into the head voice? Pitch. What exercises can I do that target these specific things? Thanks! I'll eat any advice you guys can give me
  8. Most posts on a thread I posted ever, awesome :D
  9. I've been doing this exercise where you take the alphabet Z and just making it sound like "zzzzzzzz", you never actually make the sound Z I'm not sure if this is helpful, for the voice but I find it incredibly easy to get voice placement with this. From Z, I can transition into humming really easy. Anyone know if this is a good exercise or another exercise I should use with this?
  10. I've been singing for about 4 months now and there were ALOT of times that I thought I should just stick to dancing/rapping. But that mindset made me bitter and angry and I began making excuses for myself. If there's one thing I know, I can do anything. For me, it felt that everyone else was enjoying singing while I was suffering so much because I would spend so much doing it, doing exercises but still be not that good. I remember hearing my roommate sing and although he wasn't good, he wasn't bad either. He never practices. Why couldn't I sing every time like that? But then I found out that you have to love to get better. Hating over and over again, not even for singing, but for everything in general will just create a cycle of repeated failure that will make you bitter. Always strive to get better and don't look at it as a defeat. Keep things that are warm to you. If you're feeling bad and can't find the energy to continue, take a break, find something that makes you feel good and continue. Don't give up. I guess my overall message is not to don't give up, but find love through it all. Your love for singing will always be there, but your hate will block progress, so it's better to find everything that supports you or makes you feel good and then continuing from there. It's easy to get caught in a complexity that should be so simple.
  11. Hey, noobie here but I was reading through this fascinating thread...top down, do you mean you start your scales from the highest scale to the lower scale? Or is this a method of singing? Thanks :D
  12. HAHAHAHAHA, i can imagine your wtf expression....good, then we can work together to get better hahaha I think I got it, you mean if I keep being airy, I can't do anything with it because I have no support to work with it?
  13. Thanks!! Yeah, I've noticed that it's been airy, I'm working on getting that support there. I was just worried if I get too loud that it'll hurt my vocals, I'm finding that spot that's not too airy and not too loud
  14. http://soundcloud.com/jzhang172/practice Give me anything I should work on thanks!!
  15. I recently found that as I was going up the scale and listening to myself sing that when I reached the higher note, the tendency for me at least, was that to hit that higher note, I would go breathy to try to get that sound. From memory, I remember reading about using more velocity and I began focusing on how much air was actually going into my I realized then I was using less air on the high notes.... so as I was practicing my scales again, just simple ah's and hums, I used the same air support I had for the lower notes with the higher notes. The result was a way better sound! I'm not sure if this is the right technique but I don't feel any fatigue. Any pointers or comments will be awarded with marshmallow and hot chocolate :D
  16. When getting into my head voice, I don't have it perfectly, but I find sometimes, I think my chest voice is coming along with more air I put into it. What is the cause of this? When I get into my head voice, it's not perfect and it seems i need a lot of air to get to it otherwise the sound just goes back into my throat. The result is a really loud sound, how do I make it so that it isn't loud all the time? Sometimes I can get there without it sounding loud but it sounds breathy
  17. How is your stomach supposed to feel when you sing? What are the sensations you should be feeling when singing? I met a singer a couple days ago and I asked her how it felt when she sang. She said that for her, she feels everything from the stomach when singing. She said rather then the buzzing she feels in her face, the most noticeable thing she felt was her stomach muscles. I've also heard that your stomach should feel tired after singing.
  18. I'm sure all of us do Humming, Lip trills and Ng exercises, I was wondering, these exercises probably have multipurposes, but for me, I like to understand the main purpose of it. This is my thoughts about them Lip trills - Voice placement to make sure the sound isn't coming from the throat and is focused on Connecting the notes rather then hitting the correct pitch. Humming - More Voice Placement, also to check pitch. Ng - Completely for connectivity to make each note connect with no strain rather then pitch Thoughts?
  19. I'm sure this question has been answered already but recently this problem has been occurring with me. How do you know if you are using your throat to sing? I'm trying to get the sound in my face to have that buzz near my face but all I can feel now is sound coming out of my throat for the most part. I'm trying to find that place where it feels so relaxed when I sing but I can't seem to find it without sounding too breathy. Breath support tips?
  20. Is there supposed to be air coming out while singing? If so, how much? Does this vary depending on volume or the highness of the note?
  21. I have recently hit a point in singing where I feel the need to know why completely I am doing the exercise. For liptrills, I know I am doing this to warm up and it's to relax my vocal cords, but from time to time, I start doubting whether I am doing it right or not. When I am doing liptrills, should my throat be vibrating at all? Where should the sound be coming from? What should I be focusing on when I do liptrills besides relaxing.
  22. So while singing, when going louder, more air comes out?
  23. When doing "ssss" breath exercises, I switch it up and do ssSSsss...the S represents a louder sound. Should more air be coming out of mouth or should the air coming out be consistent with the other S's regardless of the volume?
  24. Quick question, should we be using more air going up the scale? I have found that using more air makes any note louder, but it seems that going up the scale, each note is going to sound louder because it is higher, do we need to add more air as we go higher up the scale to support the note or should we be using less air?
  25. When I talk, there's always a small vocal fry and edge I can feel that comes after everything I say. It's quick and you might not notice it but it's there. I try to sing and talk from my mouth as much as possible, but it's still there. How can I fix this and is this going to ruin my voice? When I sing correctly, I can't hear a vocal fry there at all, so if I've been talking my whole life with this vocal fry, what can I do about it?
