  1. Hello fellow singers, looking for input how to approach teaching singing. I'm going to be teaching an 11 year old girl who's interested in pop/jazz. I'm fairly proficient at conveying the basics about breath, support, posture, technical stuff mostly. What exercises would you recommend, general tips and what should I focus on in general. Any advice from pro vocal teachers would be mostly appreciated.
  2. Warning! Auto-tune spotted! There are some parts where it's really noticeable. Not sure if it's a stylistic choice or not though. But I would guess it isn't, doesn't really fit with the rest of your performance. But other than that I'm sold, like the voice, the song, production. Subscribed! :)
  3. Think you should try recording everything again, WITHOUT playing guitar and sing at the same time. I know how hard it was for me to do both when I was just starting out. So it wouldn't be fair of any of us to critique your singing based on these takes. Maybe you can get a friend to play guitar for you and just concentrate on doing the vocals?
  4. I'd like some of that grit please! You can have my clean tones. :P
  5. That's a good observation benny, I do feel like I'm pushing to the floor with my back when lying down, not so much while standing upright. K I'm gonna try this anchoring thing and will report results. If anyone is having problems with finding an open throat you can do what I did, it helped tremendously for sure.
  6. If you guys listened to my two recordings, you can hear it's not happening. I know the concept, I know how it sounds when you get it right, but I can just seldomly (spell check does not approve of this word?) get that free, easy, relaxed feeling with those piercing overtones, like the throat doesn't even exist. So the other day I warmed-up, did some hums, lip rolls, the usual, finding proper support, getting through the bridge connected. But I struggled to get that rich sound. Frustrated with myself, I laid down on my bed thinking what the heck I'm doing wrong, the next thing you know, I opened my mouth, let out a chesty "ahh" AND OMG SWEET BABY JESUS there it was. Got up, sang with an open throat through the rest of my practice session. When I lost it, did the same thing, same result. The flippin' hell is going on here? o O
  7. If I remember correctly, he claims that he can hit notes in the 9th octave, shattering the world record for highest sung note by a male by more than an octave. :D
  8. Well here's a problem I definitely recognise. You sound good in your chest, but then comes that nasty leap from Eb4 to Bb4 in the chorus just around where I would say your bridge is (also mine). If you don't sound connected at F4 then no way in hell you're gonna pull that off. Something is constricting you from bridging IMO.
  9. I second what Keith said about getting "depth". You should absolutely try to emulate how he sings, the guy is a beast, I'd take his ability to sing any day. The slower part at around 3 min is the best place to start. Roy's resonance is huge there. I can tell you lack proper support there, because of how "wobbly" your vibrato is and a lack of resonance. The chorus is no cake, I listened to some live clips, even he isn't consistent and strains from time to time. This song is a monster to tackle for your current ability IMO. Find the resonance in your chest voice first! Oh god, I hope someone agrees with me, I'm not a qualified singing coach! :P
  10. This is very baffling to me, your voice doesn't sound strained, yet it certainly looks like your straining on those high notes. What's going on here? Oh and, I enjoyed it very much. Images of a snowy russian landscape came to mind, probably because of the accent. :D
  11. Wow thanks for the positive comments guys! Glad you liked it!
  12. Hey guys, phew this wasn't easy, Im' having much fun with the recording process though. Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! http://chirb.it/3Ag4zh
  13. The obvious solution here would be staccato arpeggio and scale exercises. Avoid scooping or "undershooting" the notes and just practice till it's second nature. Big part of the training is letting your muscles "remember" the position of the pitch, along with the proper amount of support that is needed for a desired tone to be achieved.
