  1. Because there is conflicting information, it probably does not make much of a difference for singing. Taking a breath through the nose as in sniffing a flower will raise the soft palate. Breathing through the mouth as in a Yawn will also raise the soft palate. The soft palate and the Larynx are connected through other muscles and somewhat work together. When your larynx drops the soft palate raises and vice versa, when you raise the soft palate the larynx drops.

Breathing through the nose will warm and moisturize the air and there is more of a chance of actually taking a deeper breath than breathing through the mouth. The tendency is to take a shallow breath when breathing through the mouth.

But, while singing, to breath through the nose you have to block off the oral cavity in some way, this means that you have to change the vocal coordination is some way.

while singing there is no need to change anything. Leave the coordination alone and when you stop emitting sound just let the air drop into the lungs. The breath will come through the nose and the mouth.

  2. Ken Tamplin is a teacher. He has his own forum. This Forum is also run by a singing teacher. Robert Lunte. Yes, Ken is a very good singer and teacher. But, it is not a good idea to advertise another teacher on a website whose owner is himself selling a singing program.

Anyone working on this? How you making out @MDEW?

I've been giving it a bit of a go. Its not so easy, but making progress!

So far I have been working on the finger picking. I have the pattern down pretty good and the chord progression but I have to admit that keeping my fingers out of the way of the open strings during the chords is not working too well. I have not even tried to sing the lead yet, but I have worked on the lower harmony. I was also waiting for someone to post a backing track just to see if they would use the studio version or one of the live versions. Live tends to be longer with more time  for instrumentals and even extra choruses and verses.

Otherwise, yes I am still working on this.

When you are ready; I for one look forward to you posting the recording hear

Let's just say that I have noticed that there seems to some sort of training exercises going on at or around the same time and place as  live events such as 911 and the subway bombing in England. Quite a coincidence. There were other "training exercises" held around october of last year. Another coincidence I imagine.

  5. "stay safe and stay Healthy" is a general statement for all, whatever their personal opinion about things. Some people get freeked out by the thought of any germ let alone one that spreads quickly. I have my own thoughts that mainstream media would attack me for so I will keep them to myself for now.

As for the song for Adolf, I started working on it right away. I have to admit that I had not worked on that song before and whether my attempts will be worthy of a recording I would still be willing to make a contribution to the affort.

Pikopuko I really enjoy your singing! I've kept listening to it! I never heard that song before so I YouTube it after listening yours and I think yours is better! I even got an TMVW account just to do this reply.

You said you had problems with the high notes, I think that's my problem too. Can you please tell me what videos from youtube you watched?

As an example, these are two of my recordings,  a Sheeran song with two diferrents aproachs, what do you think guys? how's the high notes at the chorus? the rest of it? They've been recorded with my cellphone and have no effects of any kind.

What I said before applies to everyone who sings. No matter the level. The top people still do those exercises to keep their voice under control.

Without music behind you, you sound good. Having music to sing to will help you stay on pitch. That is not saying that your pitch is bad, it is just saying that it can be better.

Singing uses different vowels than speaking. The different vowels will change the shape of the throat and help to be consistent in pitch and tone. The shape of the throat helps to sing the higher notes also. This is the reason for the practicing and paying attention to how we sound and trying different things with our voice to refine the way we sound.

    any thoughts MDEW?

Sure, I have thoughts. One thing that comes to mind, now that there are several big named musicians that are self confined or on lockdown do to corona some of them are taking to youtube to get rid of their boredom. I have watched a few and one thing that they stress to get to their level was the practicing. No one was born with any ability for anything. You learn through trial, error and adjustment. One person happened to be someone known for his speed in playing guitar riffs, shredding. He would practice a simple 6 note riff for hours. It had nothing to do with being musical. It had to do with conditioning the muscles, muscle memory and tweaking technique. For some reason people think you are just born with the ability to sing on pitch and with good tone or you are doomed to sound terrible.

Singers need to practice and learn and condition muscles and form muscle memory just like any other person learning how to play an instrument. It can get boring and monotonous and can drive your family up the wall, but it is worth it in the end.

  8.    I learned how to play guitar mostly from learning some of Johns songs,  Jim Croce and James Taylor. The songs are simple enough to figure out yourself and interesting enough that you can play them over and over again without getting bored. Plus, if you are singing a song that makes people laugh you can get away with not sounding too good.

Either John's sense of humor is similar to mine or l gained my sense of humor by listening to him.  Lyrics like " I knew a girl that was almost a lady"  and "she won't let me live with her, and she makes me live in my head", helps to give you a new way to express things.

  9.    It is sad to say and hear that we have lost another great singer, songwriter and friend.  John Prine passed do to complications of the corona virus. John was not in the greatest of health to begin with and the added stress of the virus became too much for his body to handle.

If you have heard John singing you may wonder why he would be brought up in a Vocalists forum. From a singers standpoint he was not the best of singers and his voice did not have any special characteristics. His songs are simple, uncomplicated and lack any technical flare. When he sings and writes it is as if he were having a conversation with his best friend.

That is the very reason why his songs are special, why he has had a career in music from the time he took a dare on an open mike night at a local pub and captured the hearts of many people around the world. He sings like he is singing to family, he is engaging,  funny and he makes you think a little bit.

You do not have to be the best singer with the highest notes or the most complicated  vocal runs with the perfect intonation , tone and vibrato to be a good singer or entertainer. You just need to have something to say and someone to say it to and communicate the message.

  10.     Part of getting someones singing "style" is hearing the personality and demeanor (the type of person being presented). It can be like acting.

Hank whines about things and is depressed. Merle is matter of fact, authoritative. Lefty is like the smooth talking lady's man or a car dealer trying to convince you that his car is the one you want to buy. There is a kind of Swagger in his voice, Smoothly sliding  from note to note and maybe drawing them out a little at the end.

  11.    On both you sing the melody. Singing the melody means matching the notes from one musical phrase to another. Each one may also use different scales from one song to another.

Work on the songs, one song at a time. Work on the one song. one phrase at a time.

If you are having trouble with the style a singer sings that particular song LISTEN to that singer singing that song. Hank Williams and Merle Haggard would sing the same song a little different. Hank may have a little "Whine" or "Cry" and Merle May Have a little "Matter of Fact" sound. As if Merle is telling it like is in an Authoritative voice and Hank is crying about it and being depressed.

What ever song you are going to sing, work on that song. Listen to it one phrase at a time, listing for the "Melody" of the phrase and work on matching that melody. You do not have to know what scale it is when you listen to it and match what you hear.

  12. Does any one have a basic click track in mind? Something to keep everyone in the same time, Key and chord progression. Do we stick to the album version or the extended live version? Even Kansas did not play it the same way twice and we are improvising new parts otherwise it would not be a new and special creation.

  13.      Dust in the Wind is a good choice. Sometimes we get to thinking "There is always tomorrow" but tomorrow may be too late to let friends know how we feel about them.

Adolph had been on my mind and many times I started to send a message just to say hello, then, maybe tomorrow will be a better time.

I talk to other people about my friends on the forum. I do consider all of you friends. Seeing eye to eye is not what friendship is. It is about being able to not see eye to eye and still want to be a part of the community and the conversations.

I will try to add what I can.

Wow MDEW, I had no idea that’s how they did it back then. Sounds grueling. Nowadays things seem different and, with softwares like Melodyne, i recently realized all the songs out there are corrected to perfection before making the final version so it can be daunting to match the voice I hear in a song without using softwares.

I think Melodyne is the worst thing that could happen to singers. Sure it makes it so you can dial in a pitch that may be a little off but people are using it as a crutch or even the focus of the sound of the recording.

I even hear singers who are not using melodyne make that little warble you hear from melodyne while singing live. Kind of a jump from one pitch to another.

I also understand that using electronics to change the sound of instruments including the voice can be and is part of the "Art" of creating songs but it also takes away the want and need of "Practice".

I play guitar and the use of Reverb, Echo, Overdrive and Phase shifting is essential to get the proper sound and feel for any particular song. An electric guitar with a "Clean" sound only works in certain situations. But still your guitar needs to be  "in Tune" and you need to  be playing the proper notes and chords in the proper order.

  15.      One thing that slips the mind these days is that people expect or want instant satisfaction. Record one or two takes of a song and manipulate the bad parts with electronics. In the old days of recording on two tracks, the band would play along with the vocalist and background singers and there would be a marathon recording of one song with 60 to 80 different recordings. Throughout the recording process they would keep what sounded good and discard what sounded bad refining the song as you recorded. Sometimes in the final product they would splice pieces of several recordings into one master. Today we can do this with "copy and Paste" through the computers. The point is that the more times you record or play the same song, "and pay attention to it", the more opportunities you have to improve it, find out what works and what does not.

It seemed to me that the biggest question you had was whether your voice had a good or interesting sound to it. It does. The other things like sliding into a note or nailing the note at the start or maintaining the original melody comes from getting familiar with the song....Singing it so much that it drives your family crazy. But you will know the song and people who are not around you everyday will hear a strong and interesting performance from you.

  16.     I have never heard the song before, and that is good because I do not have to compare you to the original singer.

The songs sounds good to me and I like the tone of your voice. I did not hear any pitch problems.

Now, I know I don’t have a good voice and even if I could sing with perfect pitch, I still wouldn’t have an interesting voice: I know that. But I am not trying to become a successful or professional singer. I am just trying to be the best version of myself...as far as I can.

Your voice sounds good and it does have an interesting sound.  What makes a voice interesting is how a song is presented and the feeling expressed in it.

Sing the songs the way you feel them or hear them. You do not have to sound like the original singer to be "Good"".  Willy Nelson and Elvis Presley sang some of the same songs....Willy did not try to sound like Elvis and Elvis did not try to sound like Willy. You do not need to sound like anyone else either.

I'm a rather young Bass singer: only in my early teens,

I noticed that my voice sounds much less mature than other Basses that I've listened to.

Now I'm confused about what gives a Bass, especially a classical soloist, that "Bass" sound

By darkening your sound you were falsely reproducing  a "Bass" sound. As an early teen singing with a relaxed natural tone you are NOT going to sound like a mature Bass singer. The "Bass" sound comes from vocal cords big enough and long enough to create the bass sound. At this point concentrate more on singing the pitches and learning vocal techniques. The Mature sound will come when your voice matures. Do not rush things and hurt your singing by trying to get a sound that you do not yet have.

  18.   Everyone starts out by not singing exactly on pitch. It is something you learn. Some people learn at an earlier age because of being aloud to make mistakes and then correct them. Others learn over time by giving themselves permission to practice and improve.

The sound of your voice is as good as anyone''s.  Just as you have done with this song, record yourself, listen to it and compare the melody that you are singing with the melody of the original recording.  On those places that do not sound right to you, sing them again and try to get the melody a little better.

Listening and paying attention to the melody you are going to sing is a big part of getting better. Learning how to recognize when you are singing the correct melody is not easy at first. It takes some getting used to when comparing the sound of your voice to the original singer. You do not need to sound like the other singer but you do need to sing the same melody.

Allow yourself to not sound "Great" while you are practicing, but pay attention to when you do sound really good and when you do not. Take note of which parts of a song may need some improvement and which parts sound good to you and see if you can "Hear" what went wrong and what went right. In this way you will learn to recognize when things are starting to go wrong and you can "Fix" them before they go wrong.

As I said before, the "Sound"" of your voice is not a problem. you are not matching the notes of the melody throughout the song. That takes singing the same song over and over again until you get it right.

Other musicians allow themselves practice time and time to improve. The same is for singers. The way to learn how to Match a melody is by practicing, messing up and making changes. And learning to recognize when something is right and something is wrong.

Allow yourself to be a beginner and start learning how to work on your singing to make it better.
