  1. He's an indie artist by the name of Toro Y Moi... I've always enjoyed his songs but always have thought he had a rather mediocre and boring voice. I mean it fits his songs but I've always just found it kind of dull and almost like there's nothing to it you know? Here are some of his songs: Good vibes though, for sure. What do you think of his voice / singing and what would would you rate his voice / singing out of ten? Id rate his singing / voice a 6.5-7/10. But the actual songs 7-9/10 in my opinion. Let me know what you think! :)
  2. Hi David, I've only been singing for a few months now but yes... I can deff. hear improvement from previous recordings. It's pretty sad hearing someone say "This isn't good at all". But I agree, it doesn't sound too great. With that being said, I do think there are parts that show potential and also this is a step up from previous recordings in the past. At the moment, I am not that great at all at singing, but I realize where I need to improve and how I'm going to do it! Hard work pays off and so far I think it has been paying off for me because I was 10x shitter months ago than I am now. Thanks for the constructive criticism Dave. And here is my e-mail, ianhorstb@gmail.com Please send me an e-mail, It would be awesome to talk to you. :)
  3. Thanks MDEW, to me some parts seem on pitch and some words or sentences seem off aswell. Do you hear it this way too? Or is it more so EVERYTHING sounds off pitch? Thanks for all the feedback thus far.
  4. thanks guys, I appreciate all the feedback and I will continue to work hard and improve with time! edit: to me it sounds like mostly all of these are sliiiightly off pitch at times. Does anyone else hear it too? Before, my biggest problem was that i couldn't sing on pitch at all..I've gotten better in the pitch aspect but still... Things still sound a bit off pitch to me at times. Is this something that will get better or correct itself over time? Or are there exercises to help correct this little pitch problem? And in your opinion, do all of the recordings sound slightly off pitch all the way through, or is it just when I say certain words? If I could get an answer regarding this question it would seriously mean a lot to me!
  5. I'm on a quest to become a good singer. I've been on this quest for a few months now. To track my progress, I'm going to be posting singing snippets for various indie songs... so me, singing over other peoples songs! This way, I'll be able to look back and see where I need improvement and whether or not I am actually making improvement. But the biggest part and importance of all of this, is that it's fun. I have tonsa fun singing over other peoples songs and working on my craft. What I'm about to post is a huge leap up from any songs I've recording in the past. Hearing songs I recorded months ago and then hearing this is just plain and simply awesome because I can actually hear the improvement... Here are my singing snippets for March, 2013: The last snippet is my personal favorite. :)
  6. Thanks George, but I was giving it everything I got and my mom was in the room next to me sleeping, lol. I thought I was going to get a lot of negative comments so I posted a disclaimer saying that it's not that good. I actually think the recording was decent and I'm noticing a lot of improvement, and that's what counts! thanks for the comment
  7. Hey guys, thanks for the feedback, and I'm not embarrassed by my voice at all. I guess shouldn't have said "it's not very good" multiple times even though I actually think its good. To be honest I'm pretty proud of this recording as well as my most recent ones because it really shows how much I have improved in such a short amount of time. And regarding the airy vocals, I was going for something a bit more airy, but I agree that its too airy sounding at times. And I'm doing Brett Manning's Singing Success at the moment as well as singing to the piano and guitar, and so far I'm really happy with the results. Thanks for the advice though Keith. edit: Next time I post my vocals I'll be more honest in my OP.. (and they will also sound a lot better then because I will have improved! ) I can only get better guys!!
  8. here is a short little clip that I recorded earlier today. Let me know what you think.. I'm not that great of a singer at the moment (I will be one day though), I've only been doing this seriously for a good two months, but the progress I have made thus far has been immense! Here is the link: http://picosong.com/3BST/ As I said before, it's not very good, but it's a hell of a lot better then when I first started, any feedback would be appreciated! (I am the first male singer, not the second female vocalist)
  9. Although I'm not a lazy singer and I do work hard at this craft, this comment really inspired me. Thanks Owen +1 rep :)
  10. lol... I'd continue on with my life practicing singing on a daily basis and improve as the months go by, regardless of whether or not singing in a mixed voice increases range without going into head voice. It's not really a big deal if it doesn't beacuse at the moment im not that great of a singer, I haven't developed my mixed voice yet. Why do you ask though?
  11. I'm not hearing it Keith. And if it sounds low quality, trying listening it in 480p or above. :)
  12. You must have some sort of dislike towards rappers that sing. I disagree with your comment though, sounds to me like he is a rapper who learned how to sing and he actually sounds quite good in result. And just because he's a rapper who sings doesn't mean he's using autotune. You can clearly hear that he isn't using autotune in this song. There's also many videos of him singing live (without autotune) and he sounds great! But back to the whole chest / mix voice thing... You really think he's singing in falsetto in those parts of the song I listed? Sounds pretty thick for falsetto imo. Why don't you think that's his mixed voice?
  13. Heres the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFIDaUSXBHI Comes in at around :30 seconds when he says "the life, I can't let it go" and also "that's right, I wont ever know" It doesn't really sound like head voice / falsetto but it sounds to high to be in his chest voice. So I'm thinking it's in his mixed voice. But if it is his head voice, he has a crazy thick sounding head voice that sounds really good imo. Thoughts? :)
  14. Do you even believe in the "mix" voice theory then? I've read a few books and seen diagrams where they say that E4-B4 can be mixed voice. That's just what I've read / seen though. Sorry if I came across as ignorant in that comment but anways.. At the moment my head voice reaches upto C5. But yeah I was just wondering if singing in a mix voice allows you to sing higher without going into your head voice not if you can increase the range in head voice, if that makes any sense :)
  15. without going into your head voice? So say if my highest note I'm able to sing in my chest voice is E4, will developing a mix voice allow me to sing higher than E4, say upto B4 (in my mix voice) without going into my head voice? Then anything after B4 (or a note around there) will be going into my head voice? So, Upto E4 - Chest Voice E4-B4 - Mix Voice After B4 - Head Voice Does it work anything like this, and will developing a mix voice allow one to sing higher without going into their head voice? I hope that made sense :)
  16. Update: I can now sing up to E4 in my chest (or maybe mix I dont know, but probably not) voice. Yippeee! Doesn't sound too good though, my voice often cracks as I hold the note because its transitioning in and out of head voice. But definitely counts as progress for me! :D
  17. Thanks for all the helpful info Rofleren! I listened to your clip and seen your performance! They both sound awesome. Like you said, it would be better if it was more on pitch. I'm just a begginer and one of my issues is singing consistently on pitch. I'm thinking that a vocal coach will definitely help with that. As far as my range, I can only sing upto d4 in my chest voice, then after that I go right into my head voice. I can sing upto c5 in my head voice. But at the moment my head voice doesn't sound all too good. Very thin, and somewhat breathy. Does singing in your mix voice allow you to sing higher notes than just your chest voice? Because one of my goals is to sing higher in my chest / mixed voice without going into my head voice. As far as the vocal coaching from the person you suggesting... I really appreciate the gesture but I think I'd be more comfortable doing the lessons in person rather than online. That's just me though, I don't know what it is but I find I learn better and have more fun when there is someone teaching me in person. Regarding the whole head / mix / chest voice and trying to listen to everyone... It does get really confusing with me. With some singers like The Weeknd, his voice is so damn high I can never tell if he's singing in his mix or head voice... very confusing. Thanks for all the help! I will be changing my username, and constantly be getting better at singing (I hope).
  18. Damn, literally half of the people I talked to said the same thing, so I am requesting a username change. But with that being said, it's just the username I selected, it doesn't really reflect my mindstate accept for the fact that I know im not a good singer... YET. Thanks for the kind words and advivce Is there any way you could elaborate on the "good foundation" statement? :D
  19. Okay I just started singing a while ago, so I am pretty bad at the moment. I just started doing Brett Mannings Singing Success the past two weeks. This is more of a reference point for me to remember how much I improved, once I actually start improving. And I know I will! Anyways, the song is by City and Colour, I only listened to it about three times, by no means did I try to emulate them musically or vocally, or even ryhtmatically (is that even a word?) for that matter. Again, I just started singing, and did this in about 5 takes, so please excuse the whiny voice at times. Here it is: http://yourlisten.com/channel/content/16914440/undefined
  20. Hello Mr. Namlik. I sent you an email to your chief e-mail requesting a name change. If you didn't get it for whatever reason, could you change my username to "iwillbecomeagoodsinger"? Without the quotations and question mark obviously. Thanks! :)
  21. 1. I don't have negative feelings towards my voice / singing. I have realistic "feelings". I know that I'm currently not a good singer. But will eventually become a good singer with time. 2. Doesn't do me any good mentally? It's just a username on an internet forum. I'm not sitting here pondering and thinking about my username and telling myself I'll never become a good singer. Again, its just a username. And since multiple people requested that I change it, I gladly will. But at the end of the day I could care less what my username is.
  22. Sorry to bump this thread, but I'm really curious... When do ya'll start going into your head voice on the keyboard? I start going into my headvoice after D4
  23. Thanks for the reply and info, before I begin... Do you know how to change a username? I'd like to change mine. I see the term "mix" / "mix voice" as a mix between or chest and head voice that when used allows you to sing higher notes than in your chest voice. Am I correct? By mixing the two, does it allow you to sing in higher notes without going into your head voice?
