  1. EZ Drummer is on my list. I only wished there was a demo version. 100 bucks to give some software a try seems irrational to me. I don't quite understand the concept of these DAWs. It seems to me that this is more for producers that like to shift levers while someone else is singing or playing an instrument. I've browsed a music store again and am currently thinking of buying an audio interface for 25 bucks, which is supposed to allow me to record my electric guitar with less loss/oversteering. @ronws: I'm not sure about all of Butler's influences, but Johnny Marr certainly was. Basically, I think it was Brett Anderson that once said something like "We're a British guitar band, so it's just natural we're compared to the Beatles outside the UK." That's not the exact quote, but it's basically what he said. I think, outside the UK many people still only know the music of The Beatles or maybe also Queen. There have been so many other bands that were hardly successful outside the UK. I bet there's plenty of great British music to discover on youtube. ;)
  2. Thanks for your response, Ron. And yes, there was no bridge in this song, because it didn't feel like it when I wrote it. Basically, I tend to fall into that exact scheme that you described as AABA. Always a bridge. Or at least I used to fall into that scheme. My recent work came with guitar solo parts instead. I'm trying to write something fresh when I write something new, because I don't see too much sense in writing the same stuff over and over again. I've written 40+ songs back in the days, so ... considering, I'm a limited musician, it's not that easy for me to come up with fresh ideas. As for this song right here, I already thought of adding a decent rhythm guitar pattern in the chorus to make the music sound "fuller". But for this demo, I kept the original demo recording from back then. And back then, I always tried to write the music for one guitarist only. That's because of my main influence, Bernard Butler. The problem with that approach, of course, is that the music might sound a bit "thin" at times. But, there's always room for improvement and we'll see if I can gather some musicians to contribute to this song or any of my other songs. Whenever people give me the feeling that a song is worth being re-recorded properly, that's what I intend to do. But I also know how limited time is when music is only a hobby and you're not making your living from it. I probably could have finished my current main project already if it hadn't been for lack of time. Just for the record: This song really wasn't inspired by Lennon/Beatles, but by a Bernard Butler piece (but I do realize now that the song does sound somewhat Lennon-esque ... but that wasn't intentional, it just happened ... and that's partly the beauty of making music ... when things just happen ...)
  3. A couple of months ago, I started looking for singers to collaborate with. The first song I used for this search was The Tale of the Cypress Girl. ronws even "shocked" me by saying something like I've captured the spirit of John Lennon with this song, but ... well ... maybe he simply heard something that was there all along, but I didn't hear it until I found a singer who took my lyrics and put down the vocals you can hear here: Dug really put some Lennon into this, I think And of course: Yes, this was only a HOME-MADE DEMO, it is NOT a (semi) professional recording with special hardware and stuff. There is no bass, but it would do the song good. I'm a poor guitar player, I play sloppy and have timing issues. But this is only a demo, so what?!? A demo always comes first before recording a song properly. So if you like the song and know how to record music properly, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm definitely willing to record the music properly, but I don't have the means myself. So please, the focus of your feedback should be the singing. This is a singers forum after all ;)
  4. Well, Adon, you asked what I am, if not a guitarist: I see myself as a "hobby songwriter". I can play guitar and keyboard just good enough to write songs, but I'm terrible at playing a full song without mistakes. But then again, I'm not really practicing. I would have practiced more if I had had a band at one time, but people in my area always only want to start "cover bands" - I've never had any interest in wasting my time with covers. It's much more exciting to me to bring own original ideas to life. Anyway. If anyone wants to contribute to a proper re-recording of the song, don't by shy, get in touch EDIT: Adon, since you mentioned you'd be interested in more songs, I would like to point out that this was the second Drusilla Online "release" (if a "demo" can ever be a "release", that is). The first one was with female singer Mia Marrè and the thread "died" here: http://themodernvocalist.punbb-hosting.com/viewtopic.php?id=6368 - only Ron, the good soul of this forum, bothered commenting. In the collaboration subforum, I once started a thread looking for singers and used a song called "The Tale of the Cypress Girl" as "appetizer". That one is currently in the works with yet another (male) singer and might be the third release, but Mia also is working on a couple of songs. Hmm ... and Ed started writing lyrics for a ballad of mine ... Ed? ;)
  5. Thanks for the constructive feedback, that's very welcome. Of course, I would like to re-record this properly. Or have it re-recorded properly, since I'm a pretty poor guitarist. As part of the Drusilla Online project, I'm not limited to internet collaborations with singers only. Any guitarist, bassist, drummer, who likes the music, can contact me. I'm fully aware that the current demo version is a very sloppy recording, but I've already pointed that out in my first posting. So the problem is known, the solution is not. I've tried to re-record the song, but Ed preferred to go with the 2005 version. And what should I say? I'm still the same poor-skilled guitarist, so I think that the "home-re-recorded" version really didn't turn out better than the 2005 version, just slightly different. For the record, that 2005 recording is actually a 64 kbps recording. I know, I know ... but back then, I only wanted to demo this stuff for myself and RAM and HDD drive space were not as big as they are now. So the guitar track has this "glassy" sound all over it, which comes from the low kbps recording quality. But ... there's really not much point in getting too much into details over an old home-made demo recording. There are much better home-recording possibilities nowadays, people can actually record demos that sound like semi-professional studio recordings. I'm fully aware of that development. It just won't help my poor guitar skills, so ... if anyone wants to join in on the project and re-record the instruments, just drop me an e-mail. Ed's vocal track, of course, is not just a 64 kbps recording. Just wanted to mention this in order to avoid any confusion ;)
  6. I’ve uploaded the result of an internet collaboration with singer Ed Millican to Soundclick: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1300275&songID=12301477 It’s a home-made demo recording, not a semi-professional studio recording, as I’m sure y’all can tell from listening to it. So please keep that in mind. Ed wrote his own lyrics and vocal line, so please feel free to comment on his work on this song since this is a forum for singing. I'll tell him to stop by here and respond to your welcome constructive criticism. You can find the lyrics and credits on the Soundclick site as well. This collaboration is part of my “Drusilla Online” project.
  7. Now that's only my personal opinion, but that's the most beautiful track someone has posted here since I registered a couple of months ago. I usually don't want to compare good music to good music (this song vs. these fine progressive rock tunes from guitargeorge for example), but this song simply has a certain "IT" factor to me. Y'know, something that I can't really explain, but it just feels right. The music, the singing style, the voice - and of course that radio sound effect for the voice track. I totally dig that and have used that effect for my own demos every once in a while. One question: Are you interested in internet collaborations?
  8. I've started an internet collaboration project a few weeks ago and am proud to present the first demo release: The music is an old home-made recording with very low-grade equipment and was basically only a sort of "personal audio note" to me, but Mia (the singer) made this recording so much better with her singing ... I'm really happy that she worked on that song with me. Please leave your comments on the song and Mia's singing, of course. And now just sit back, relax and enjoy the music EDIT: Now also on Soundclick: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1300275&songID=12270078
  9. I'm not the right person to judge your singing in regards to technical details, but I usually click away after 5 seconds, if I don't like something. I didn't click away after 5 seconds, didn't even think about it Your voice is better than Matthew's, in my opinion - but his singing is better. He's simply more emotional connected to his own stuff and can put more passion into his singing. But well, that's why you chose a Muse song, I guess . I personally love Muse for the music, especially the wild guitar stuff. So "Sing for Absolution" isn't quite my favourite Muse song. I'd like to hear you cover some other Muse song. "Unintended" would be an obvious choice after "Song for Absolution". You'd make a pretty good cover of that one, I'm sure ;)
