  1. After I've been practicing awhile my throat tends to get kind of a tight feeling and a little sore. I think the bulk of my problem is singing high notes (I'm a bass so that's a typical problem I guess). I transition to my head voice at around middle C and I can not figure out how to use my head voice without quite a bit of strain. I try relaxing my jaw and opening up my throat, but it doesn't seem to alleviate the strain. I was taking vocal lessons, but have to stop due to a family vacation followed by heading off to college, so I don't have a personal teacher anymore, but feel that I have a working knowledge of proper technique. Can someone please try to explain a proper way to reach head voice? I really want a usable F# above middle C at some point (I'm trying not to rush into since I'm only 18 and have time to improve drastically and for my voice to completely develop. Just going to take things slowly on a day to day basis). I just worry about the longevity of my voice because singing is one of the activities in my life that bring me incredible joy and I want to be able to do it until I die.
  2. I suppose basso cantante is the operatic term. A range of e2-f#4 or around there. I don't really have the upper register yet but I'm working on it.
  3. Hi! I'm an 18 year old male with a high bass voice. For the past 3 months I have been taking voice lessons and have improved tremendously; however, with this improvement has come ambition and with this ambition has come over practicing and vocal fatigue. I almost always have a slightly throat after practicing and am becoming worried that I may permanently damage my voice. Therefore, I have set forth the following plan: 1) Take tomorrow off completely 2) On Sunday do a short low impact vocal warm up with absolutely no straining 3) After Sunday I go back to a regular practice routine only this time it will be shorter and I will focus on eliminating strain and building stamina. So, does that sound like a reasonable plan? Do you have any critiques?
  4. I've read what I can find on getting into head voice and I can't figure out how to get into it for the life of me. Or I don't think I am getting to it. Whenever I think that I'm sending resonance through my head I just end up raising my larynx in reality. I am 18 so I know my voice is not done maturing but my usable range is f2-c4. I can go higher but not for long. I try to keep good breath support an open throat and a relaxed larynx but anything above middle c even with all those things begins hurting quickly. That's why I'm thinking I'm not getting to my head voice at all and am just pushing my chest voice too much. I have a private teacher but I won't see her for a week and a half and don't want to put my voice under stress for that long. If anyone had any ideas on how to get there I would greatly appreciate it. I'm getting frustrated and that's not helping my singing at all.
  5. So I sang too much yesterday and ended up with a bit of a sore throat. Today my throat was better but I thought it would be a good idea to not sing anyway. However, I decided to go through a quieter and not quite as rangy vocal warm up just to get my vocalcords stretched out. Was that a good idea or should I just shut up? I didn't feel any strain today when vocalizing but I probably will take tomorrow off as well just to be safe.
  6. I really love the vocal tone that Bing Crosby and other crooners get, but my voice doesn't have the same depth and doesn't have that creamy sound. Is there something I can do get closer to this sound? I take voice lessons, but I don't want to ask my teacher because she doesn't really like jazz a whole lot and I'm taking from her to learn proper technique. I have a pretty good classical voice; I just want to transition to a more crooning style on occasion.
  7. Thanks for the reply! I see exactly what you mean.
  8. Okay. So I have never had any lessons and this song goes a bit out (way out) of my range, as I'm sure you can tell. I started off kind of bad, and was in a hurry, and my microphone isn't very good. I'm not expecting anyone to call this good, but am hoping for passable or nearly so. I'll take any comments, critiques, compliments, whatever. I am 17, so if my voice doesn't sound very mature, that's why. http://youtu.be/Z8oMH2jzIy4
