  1. Thank you..I actually had not heard of that singer or some of those songs, just you-tubed her...her voice is so beautiful, I love celtic stuff (Mary black, and also Joan Baez,Judy collins) Had a listen to bonny portmoor....gives me some new songs to learn. Thanks again, and also for the mic advise earlier:)
  2. Yep, it has been driving me slightly crazy...but such is life...Thanks for the mic advise and also I had a look at your recordings, I thought they were very good:)
  3. Hi Geno, Thanks for your reply:) a friend helped me set up the recording...and your right...that set up is quite new to me...I cant say I felt completely comfortable. I'am also recovering from a back injury which had me out of singing completely for the last 6 months, no concerts, no practise...its been difficult. I think i'am going to scrap this one and give myself a little more time to recover....and to get ust to the environment. I even look worried in the video :-)...I went to see my back consultant today and he said it was time to get back singing....I jumped too far too fast. Lesson learned:cool:
  4. Thanks for your feedback. Your spot on with the high notes, particularly the first one, the backing track moves a little too fast in places for my liking...:)
  5. Thanks for your kind reply. I guess I could do with a better mic...but the prices are shocking!! if you could recommend any that are reasonably priced, I'd be most grateful? ...and welcome to the forum...I've only been on here a week, but I've found people positive and helpful
  6. I'am afraid as an experienced classical singer, I don't quite agree with some of your points, but I certainly appreciate your feedback. Its interesting you mention about volume. I'm a dramatic soprano and so am actually more suited to slightly heavier operatic repertoire. I often sing Verdi etc in concert. I'am afraid I had to stand well back from the microphone in this recording and in concert I've never used amplification. Also, I speak a little Italian and have studied the language in dept. Great that you noticed a few flat pitches, will certainly review them, although just to say, using staccato in this aria would not be historically correct. I like to stick to the characteristics of the "verismo" style and also the composers intentions as much as possible..although the word "verismo" in itself opens a can of worms Thank again for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.
  7. Hi, I've quite new to the forum and I thought since I've been advising others on their singing, its about time I put up some of my singing for you to review:-) I recorded this today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW8CjM0tdo8
  8. I'm sorry you haven't had much luck with singing teachers but its great your making progress on your own. when you speak about releasing weight, i'am guessing your talking about not carrying the chest voice up too high, this is a good idea. The passaggio is a tricky area and needs time to develop. I have students singing everything from opera to singer/songwriter stuff and i'd just like to say that essentially the principals of good singing apply to all genres :-) Even though I sing classical music, I can also sing folk...and I dont believe that any one genre is "better" then the other....Rock singing is a perfectly valid type of expression. best of luck to you.
  9. Hi, Had a look at your clip. Well done!! some good singing here...From the technical point of view, its great to here that you are working on blending the registers. How long have you been working on that? I cant say that I'am hearing too much cry but just be a little careful not to try to "create" a sound. It can be a little difficult when singing a very well known song. Well done, Personally, I particularly like the higher parts of the song :-)
  10. Hi, its great that you included a video, from a singing teacher point of view, it allows me to see how you are using your body and facial muscles :-) I think it would be useful to you to start working on your vowel production and also to look at your breathing. On the plus side, I am hearing some very nice tone colors in the middle of your register. I am also new to youtube, and have subscribed to your channel..Please feel free to have a look at my channel and to subscribe if you like...I love my job, so if you have any questions, just ask :-)
  11. yep, to my ear...I cant quite make out your words from 0'56 to 1'00. .."something something was made at the alter top?", a little at about 1'24...and 1'30...cant make out the long note. Sorry to be so direct!! But you are using some good technique in your singing...I wonder if the music is ever so slightly too loud..? that might be why so of the lower notes are unclear to me. Just a thought
  12. Hi, Had a look. On the plus side, I think you have quite an interesting voice...there is a nice color from 0'15 to 0'22. As a singing teacher, its obvious to me that you havent had vocal training and so the elements that need a little work would be your diction and also finishing your phrases ( you tend to drop off a little on the last note)...but not to worry, its just stuff to learn :-). if I might also say, you see to have more control of your voice in the lower parts...I think you will need some help to understand how to take control of the upper register. But all in all, for a beginner...congrats..you can sing:) If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
  13. Hi, I had a listen to both clips. I can certainly see that you have been working on your vocals...and well done! Its a definite improvement. I'am guessing your teacher has been working with you on allowing the voice to flow freely and not to push the sound? I think there is still a little more work to be done here, as their is for all :-) Also, just be a little careful not to modify your vowels a little too much, when we do that it can take away a little from the impact of the words. I think you might want to support the sound more on the high note at 4'27". Its sounding a bit strained at the moment, but even for Opera singers, It's hard for us on those high notes, so not to worry. hope that helps
  14. Hi, I had a look at your clip. I found it quite uplifting. It has a certain charm about it....are you singing with a band? What I particularly like is the way you take a very upbeat song and add slightly sarcastic overtones which I think gives it style :-) Don't know if your looking for comments on your singing. Nice tone, could use a little more breath support on the middle and high parts of your voice. Some teachers would say to improve your English diction but I think the color of your pronunciation adds to the piece in this case...and gives it a relaxed feel. Pitch is mostly secure...if you intend on making a polished recording later on...try to mix the volume of the voices a little more :-) well done!!
  15. Hi AnonSinger, I have given this song to some of my students in the past! So can you sing: in a nutshell yes! But if you dont mind I'd like to comment on a few things. Firstly, personally I feel your voice (based on this clip) would be more suitable to the Singer/Songwriter genre. Its always interesting when as singers we sing a well known song, made famous by a very strong vocal talent like Amy Winehouse....people have that version in the back of their heads without realizing it :-) What I like about your voice is that you have a distinct sound and good control. But I feel that more expressive songs would suit you better. If you have any question, please feel free to ask and all the best.
  16. Hi Amir, I am also new to youtube, feel free to have a look at my channel. I'am not sure why you would want to make this song more happy?? It seems to me that the structure of the composition is fundamentally melancholic and perhaps sorrowful....I don't think you need to make any changes. I particularly like where the echo reinforces the message of the song. Personally I would like to see you use a little more variety in your pitching, but that's just me...coming from a "teacher-eee" point of view. For a "happier" feel, Maybe consider using this song as the basis for a further composition, incorporating more major keys and a more upbeat feel...brighter tone colors and a 6/8 time signature? I really enjoyed the video, it looks great :-) and have subscribed to your channel. All the best
  17. Hi Elena, I can see that you've been working on your legato line and well done!! Your doing a good job :-) This is an aria that I have often sung in recitals and concerts. Have you seen the opera? Its interesting that much of the music for this aria was taken from Catalai's school days and originally from an early song. It really shows if you see the opera, as it seems somehow out of place....it's quite tragic really, the way his life turned out...he was seen as having so much potential as a student and then it never really materialized. I hope you dont mind if I make a few comments as to your singing...Firstly you have a beautiful lyric tone to your voice...which is such an attractive quality :-) If I may mention a few areas for further study...I think there is more scope for dynamic variety in this aria. the words are quite dramatic and meaningful and I would like to see you working on the expression of every single word, which in turn will lend itself to greater dynamic variety. Also, this aria comes from the verismo canon and so it might be helpful for you to do a little more research about this type of classical singing. I often say to my students that the more you know about the role...it shows in subtle but profound ways :-) Also, be a little careful of your breath support when going for those high notes...but all in all, you have done a nice job of this advanced aria and I'm sure you will grow into it as you develop as a singer. I wish you all the best. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask :-) Laura O'Sullivan LTCL http://www.mysinginglesson.net/
  18. Hi Joseph, I had a look at your youtube channel and subscribed :-) I am also new to youtube, feel free to have a look at my channel. Firstly, I like your playing and the way you accent the melody of the song. Your singing has a nice tone and you have a good sense of pitch and rhythm :-) One thing that perhaps you might work on is your level of emotional expression in your singing and also one thing I often say to my own students is that you have to put a lot of energy and breath support into your singing. I'am not sure that you know how to make the most of your voice yet...but no matter what level one is at..there's always room for improvement :-) so not to worry. You have a lovely natural approach...well done!! If you would like any help or have any questions, please feel free to ask, All the best, Laura O'Sullivan LTCL http://www.mysinginglesson.net/
  19. Hi defscott, had a listenin to your clip. I really enjoyed it! You have a good voice. I found that in the opening phrase or two, you are singing in a very healthy way....natural and relaxed. I suspect that as you are rising in pitch, there is a hint of tension coming through, and maybe the sound could be a little more supported and rounded. These things can easily be dealt with, its just a case of learning how to deal with the upper register in a healthy way. I'am afraid I don't really like your last note...I hope you dont mind me saying Also, I am quite impressed with your diction and also your emotional commitment to your singing :-) I am quite concerned by your comment regarding vocal fatigue. 9 times out of 10 times, that happens when your not using your voice in an efficient way. If you would like any further help or have a question, please feel free to ask :-) Laura O'Sullivan LTCL http://www.youtube.com/user/Lauraosullivanmedia
