I was groovin. Love this song. Love your timbre on this song. Lots of good moments.
Technique wise, there are a few places where it sounds a bit stuffy to me and the 'Bono' timbre I'm familiar with either scrunches or goes a bit slack. It's like a hypo nasal plugged nose kind of sound.
If you raised your soft palate just a bit more and got a bit more 'height' in the back of your throat. Talller vowels like ahh (operation), or a in apple it might help project the falsetto bits, and ease a little bit of strain around the very top of the bridge. At least this is something I've found with my voice. If you do this gradually as you ascend it doesn't have to be a super noticeable transition.
Overall, I think this is a great song for you to sing. working in and out of the falsetto right in the bridge and your vocal characteristics and the song fit well. I'm gonna take a swing at it with a backing of some kind, next chance I get. I've only ever sung it acapella and would like to throw something better together.

Nice Bono.....Your tone and style is Smooth and Buttery ( can't think of a better word ) where Al is Sharp and Punchy........
Nice contrast between the two but both work very well for this song.

Al Green got the most votes. Looks like we're doing "Let's Stay Together" for R&B this month! Challenge topic will be up shortly.

This month, we're doing Let's Stay Together by Al Green!

Let's run this one until August 12th. As usual, you can upload an acapella take or a take with the instrumental in the background. The latter is greatly encouraged. You can post as many takes as you want. Just make it clear when you are posting your final version.
Need a backing track? Look here:

The process for selecting August's challenges will begin on July 25th, so be on the lookout!

Here's a recording from this evening, now I tried recording audio with 2 mic's and a line out from guitar (one of the mic's visible, other one as a room mic). I think it was KillerKu who in one of my previous covers pointed out I should make more of an effort with the recording setup. It's not yet where I want it to be with the audio, but getting better I think.
Anyway - I like this song, it's fun to sing and leaves room for playing around with distortion.

Purple Rain or anything Prince does would be the trifecta of challenges. A bit of every style in there, and that sweet and delicious Minnesota Funk.

It is, as you say, a very difficult and beautiful song! I can't listen to Donny without getting a bit teary-eyed, so I was listening with very judgmental ears, and you did great!

This was great. You managed to keep your smooth crying timbre, without squishing it on the high notes, which I believe is good progress. I wouldn't be able to sing this song as smoothly, imo and would need more twang, brightness, and harshness in some of the upper regions. You've really expanded your core timbre since coming here.
Overall, it's just a great performance. I kind of like the occasionally odd vowel due to your native language. I'd personally get frustrated if everyone sounded the same on every vowel. I hope you keep a bit of it, for flavor as a singer. Maybe split the difference. It's part of what makes you refreshing to hear. You sound great, but not like a nameless, faceless American Idol contestant and little quirks are part of it.

Bono reacted to Gsoul82 in Preliminary Discussion Regarding July's Challenge
    Hey all,
I thought now would be a good time to suggest how things are going to go down for next month. Being short on time and the fact that people just don't log in every single day sometimes, I think it would be good to make things clear ahead of time, so people know how selection will go down before it's time for selection.
So, what the plan has been is that voting for new genres would  open up on the 26th of the month. July's challenge is meant to start on July 6th. June's challenge also ends on July 6th.
I think the final solution we can use here, so that from now on we can vote for everything, will be this:

Let's open voting on the 25th of the month from now on. Let's open voting on June 25th, which will be for genre selection. We'll be doing two genres again. Voting will be open for 4 days. Voting will close on the 29th in this case.

Voting will open for song selection on the 29th. It will be open for 3 days. This won't be a poll. Everybody can suggest two songs for each genre, just like before. This will end on the 2nd.

Voting for the challenge songs will open on the 2nd, and it will run for 4 days. From July 2nd to July 6th.

The challenge for July will begin on the 6th.

Does everybody think this is good? If not, make it clear. Remember, I am merely the facilitator of these challenges. I try to organize things in a way to try to keep everyone involved.
These are the genres, once again.

    R&B

    Rock

    Country

    Blues

    Pop

    Folk

    Jazz

    Gospel

We did Rock in May. We are currently doing Country and Jazz. That still leaves Blues, Pop, Folk, R&B, and Gospel. Remember, the goal of these challenges is to get everybody doing different things. We want everybody to get out of their element and get them used to doing this stuff. This will allow as many people to get involved as possible, because the people who use this forum don't all listen to the same stuff, and, if the goal is to learn something other than what you're used to, plus still having the chance for your genre(s) of choice to be chosen, we're really including people (and there's also the fact that, for example, if Country is one of the chosen challenge genres, you don't have to sing a Country song like a Country song here. If your favorite genre is Rock or R&B, you can sing the challenge songs in those styles).
Country and Jazz were this month, so they will not be choices for this next month, just like Rock wasn't a choice for June. Rock will be back on the ballot this month. Of course, Rock can be voted in again, but it's also important to note that there are several genres that have yet to receive their first shots. Let's make a solid effort to give everything a chance, folks. If it gets close to Christmas time, and we still have genres that we haven't done yet, things may need to be reevaluated.

So, if everyone is alright with what I proposed up there with the dates, then we will proceed. The topic regarding rules and guidelines will be edited, and this is what we'll go by from now on.. This topic will close on the 25th, and the genre voting topic will go up.

Funny you should mention The Phantom, That was one of the first musicals I bought the recording of. I loved the musical and Michael Crawfords voice especially. I have recorded some of those songs although I have lost them over the years. Maybe it's time to do some new recordings of those. Thanks again for the kind words Bono, I enjoyed your singing very much.

Hey Rob, this is a really beautiful song...! Thank you for sharing..  Even though you have a very pleasant sounds in the lower parts of your voice, I think it would be even better if you sing it one or two half steps higher. In some passages you remind me to this Argentine vocalist of the 80s:

I never heard this version of this song before, it's a great arrangement. 3:14, "You taught me precious secrets" sounds so full of emotion and great on that phrase - and the G4 on "love" at 3:43 was also awesome. I like that you really took your time with this and made every line mean something as I was listening. You really communicated this song well! Great job.
