  1.   So if I understand correctly I need to phonate in a lighter mass to get out of the throat, then compensating the loss of power by twanging more so I get more adduction on the folds, amplifying the edging vowels?      You're probably right, I could use more emotional intention in my singing. I guess I'm just a little too focused on singing properly.
  2. Thanks Ron!I appreciate your comment. I'm not really trying to sound like Layne consciously though I sure don't mind the comparisons. I'm working on singing less heavy. It's a lot better already. I've always had bad speaking habits. A very lazy, throaty speaking voice which I think is something that's delayed my progress a little. I think there is alot less twang in Dutch speaking when compared to American voices and the accent from the area I come from kind of contributes to the lazy and throaty speaking.
  3.   Thank you for the quick and detailed response Robert! I've been training with the 4P for about 3 to 4 months now, I'm not entirely certain as to how long. What helped most is that Pillars explains clearly how the voice works without alot of ambiguity. The abundance of excercises is also great, as I have a good work ethic if I may say so myself, but before Pillars I had no clue on what or how to train my voice. I always thought I was born with a flat, dull voice that couldn't sing high but now I'm actually starting to be able to listen to my own voice.   Knowing that I have a good training program that works motivates me, as I'm certain that I'll become better if I just keep at it.   I'm recording with a Line 6 UX2 hooked to my PC. Vocals through a Rode NT1A.    I understand what you mean with a gaggy, heavy sound. I've been having trouble with that for a while and it's actually a lot better now. My voice was just underdeveloped when I started and I had bad, lazy speaking habits. I don't know if my native language (Dutch) has anything to to with it, but I've been working really hard to get a more quacky, edgy sound to my voice, but it's just that my natural voice was the exact opposite of twangy when I started. So it's taking a lot of work. When I do the excercises in the FBR I mostly train in edging vowels like EH and AE, doing them as quacky as possible. But when I sing songs I still slip back into old habits I guess. Are you saying that I should shade more into edging vowels when singing this song, or do I misunderstand?
  4.   Hi guys! I've been busy training with the Four Pillars for a couple of months now and I'm making good progress. I just recorded this cover of Rotten Apple in one take. I know my timing's a bit off sometimes but I wanted to post this anyway. All I'm looking for is any critique or points I could improve on, really, aside from the timing thing.    It's not the most difficult song but it's quite comfortable for me to sing, and I really love the song.    I also recorded the instrumental track myself, btw.
  5. This sounds pretty damn cool. I'd like to hear you singing along to a GNR track.
  6. I think you need more adduction on your vocal chords, especially when singing the high notes. Your high notes sound very breathy. You should be aiming for a sharper, brighter sound. Take into account that I'm just someone that's learning to sing as well so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Maybe someone more knowledgable could jump in and help you out too. The distortion is nice, but I think you'd sound better without. How does your voice feel after singing this song?
  7. Getting someone to coach you in person would be more benificial to you than buying yourself a program, I think. Maybe Skype lessons would work too. This is just my opinion so just take it with a grain of salt as I'm no expert, not in singing nor in coaching people.    I've got Robert's program which gives you all the tools you need to train to become a great singer. It provides you with exercises that build your voice gradually if you keep at it. I've been making great progress with it myself.  For a beginner like yourself it would be wise to also buy a couple of lessons with Rob or a different TVS coach, if you decide to buy the program. The exercises work like a charm but you have to be doing them right for them to work and as a beginner you could easily be performing them in the wrong way. (Speaking from experience here)   You could also try to find someone in your area that'll coach you, if that's what you prefer. This would probably work too, and a couple of lessons shouldn't be more expensive than buying a singing program.
  8.   I recognized the Orbison-eque sound you have quite quickly even though I haven't listened to the man himself in quite a long time, so you've definitely got something good going there! All the more power to you.   For me, bridging early has helped get rid of the bottom up constriction quite a lot. I used to sing in a really heavy mass but wasn't aware of that until I started training with the 4P. Now when I train and sing I just try to phonate as light as possible, adding air and twang from there to create a powerful sound. Don't know if that makes any sense but that's the best I can explain it atm.
  9. '>   I'm a big fan of CCR so when I noticed that this band did a cover of I Put A Spell On You I was pretty skeptical at first.  I honestly don't like the bands own music at all, they're too 'poppy' for my taste. I was pleasantly suprised by their cover though, especially at the singer. I thought it'd be neat to post it here, see what you guys think.  Any thoughts on his technique? Is he using headvoice? To me it sounds like he's bleeding quite a bit of air on the high notes. I'm no expert though!
  10. I understand it's hard to get a decent recording with people about, this sounds pretty great though. I wasn't expecting you to sing that low but it works! Your voice resembles Elvis on the low parts and Roy Orbison when you go higher, imo. How long had you been singing prior to the head voice training and twang work?
  11.   Good to hear it from the maestro himself!   Will do and thanks for responding quickly.     Likewise! I haven't encountered similar customer support anywhere, really.     I sure hope not! And making odd noises is my favorite pasttime.      Thanks man that's encouraging!  10 weeks ago my head voice was pretty much nonexistent, similar to how you describe yourself 2 years ago. A windy and small whisper-like sound lacking twang. I guess that's falsetto then? Do you have any current samples of your voice? I'd like to hear!
  12. That's a really neat tip Daniel, thanks! Sometimes the breathing just seems to ''click'' for me and I don't have to think about it, and sometimes I can't seem to get it right, like today. It's pretty annoying but I'm improving quite fast which motivates me to keep at it!     Hi Robert! I'm Ramon, if you recall, we mailed about 2 months ago. You talked to me about taking lessons to make sure I was doing all the exercises correctly. I found Rob van den Biggelaar by googling for a TVS coach in the Netherlands. I've done 3 Skype lessons with him and he's a pretty great and knowledgeable teacher. We're actually working on the Foundation Building routine at the moment!
  13. http://vocaroo.com/i/s1MBcg9w8BvC   When my voice cracks like this, does it mean I'm not supporting enough, or haven't I strengthened my twang musculature enough yet? I thought it was the latter myself since I still can't phonate quack mode in headvoice. When I do try my voice cracks and goes all over the place as if I'm yodeling. Really weird sounding and not pleasant. I could record a sample of it if necessarry.   I've been practicing with the Four Pillars of singing for about 10 weeks now and recently I've started taking Skype lessons with a local TVS teacher here in the Netherlands.
  14. For some reason I can't quote while I'm using the mobile version of the forum on my phone. Is this a known issue or is there something wrong on my end? @Ron: That actually makes a lot of sense so I'll have keep that in mind too! Good stuff, thanks! Also, when you said back of the pressure earlier I assumed you meant breath pressure? When I try to do that my voice unravels into falsetto. I can't keep the compression going when I go less than full throttle on breath support.
  15.   You noticed that huh, lol. Chris Cornell is definitely someone I idolize as a vocalist.     Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I've noticed that the flip is always worse on the descend for me so I'll definitely give that a shot.
  16. Hi all! My name's Ramon, I'm 22 years old and hail from the Netherlands. I've been skulking about these forums for a couple of weeks now. I wanted to post a short clip of my voice doing an ascending G3 - G4 siren. Skip to the bottom if you want to listen, cause here's a brief summary of my singing history.   I've been singing for a year now. But I only started to take it seriously in the last month or so, as I started training with the Four Pillars of Singing. Before that, I was training with a local teacher but she lacked the necessary experience and expertise for me to grow under her tuition. There was no head voice training whatsoever so I couldn't sing the songs I wanted to, because they were too high for me. I practiced scales about an hour a day but I didn't progress, to my dissapointment. So I left!   Then I remembered that I'd bought the 4P a couple of years ago (Believe it was 2012 when I bought it) and went out and mailed Robert Lunte. He was kind enough to allow me to freely update and redownload my 4Pillars copy. (Awesome customer support, anyone?) When I initially bought the program a couple of years ago I became sick. In fact I still am but it has just receded (if that's the correct term for that). For a long time I was unable to engage in proper singing, I believe about 2 years. Then when I got better and wanted to start singing again I totally forgot about the 4P and went to that local teacher instead. BIG mistake. Wasted a ton of money on practically useless lessons.    I feel I've improved more in the last month of practicing with the 4P than I have in entire previous year.       Is this proper head voice which I'm phonating? Also, are there any glaring issues? Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated, thanks!
