    Dunno if there is a definitive answer for this.
    When you say "pulling chest TOO high"...what is that based on?? I would think one of the main considerations as far as pulling chest "too" high would be if you pull it so high that you sort of get 'stuck' and find it hard to gracefully bridge up to higher notes. I suppose that is a matter of knowing your own range and also knowing what you are singing. For instance if you know you can only pull chest comfortably up to, say, G4...yet you are going to sing an A4, then maybe you want to start bridging a little bit earlier. In other words if you pull chest as high as you can, it can make it sort of tough to gracefully bridge at that point.
     
    other than that it is all about artistic choices...what tone you want etc. There are a lot of different flavors available. Obviously Ann Wilson probably pulled chest a lot higher than, say , Olivia Newton John. Of course that doesnt mean Ann pulled as high as possible on every song
     
    Id say just work on the ability to bridge lower or higher etc. You can work on pulling that chest higher and you can also work on bringing head voice lower so that eventually you have a wider range of choices of where you want to start bridging

    wikiloops is music collaboration.   Its not "backing tracks" per se....in other words its not karaoke stuff.
    its all original stuff. people go and upload tracks of all sorts and then anyone can add whatever they want to any track. I think there are like 90000 tracks currently. All genres and members from like 150 countries.
    I went there originally to find drum tracks to start my songs with, before I ended up getting EZ Drummer software.
     
    Whats the catch? the only catch is that there are musicians there of ALL levels...so therefore the tracks are of all levels lol.
     
    Its a VERY friendly and positive place....too friendly in a sense because one can post up anything and people gush all over it....but thats good for people just getting started etc

    just some quick vocals I threw onto a Latvian buddys music track (from wikiloops)
    I wrote the lyrics around 9pm and I couldnt keep my eyes open and I was going to just do the vox later but I decided to "just lay down a scratch vox track"...but you know how that goes. I was dead tired so this may not be my best but I still dig it even though I was struggling a bit
     
    The vibe is a little different than my songs because essentially he never changes chords lol....gives a bit more of a stoner rock feel, which I dig

        The reason you keep getting this generic answer is because it is true. Even the best singers continue to work on their voice. It is an ongoing thing.
     Singing on pitch and in KEY is the biggest part of sounding OK as a singer. You "Learn" how to hear the pitch and train and practice to control and tune your voice.
    Being an awesome singer depends on how you approach singing the songs you choose to sing. This is also something you develop as you sing more and more songs. But YES as a general rule anyone can improve their singing voice. How they use it is up to them.

    Vocal teacher for all styles for over 50 years, David Kyle, The “Maestro” became a local Seattle icon and was considered by the industry to be one of the best vocal instructors for contemporary singers in the world. Unique to the “Maestro’s” approach was his method for expanding vocal range into multiple “registers”, or what we would refer to today at TVS as, "Bridging & Connecting". Maestro was also keen on eliminating psychological barriers that hinder singers’ freedom of expression, by use of creative visualization techniques and development of healthy auditory imagery for singing.
    One day, Nate Burch, one of my students from Seattle, came to the lesson with an old coffee stained piece of paper that had a hand written, transcribed lecture from Maestro Kyle on it.     LECTURE:
      Those sounds which seem to ring the most are usually the best. Those which seem the roundest are usually the best. Those which seem to resonate are usually the best. Those which seem to echo are usually the best. So listen out into the theater and see if they are echoing, and if they are round, and they are resonant. Connect your notes and don’t be afraid. There are two kinds of stars. There are “stars” and there are “superstars.” The star no matter how he tries he just can’t seem to become a superstar. He’s great, great, great, great, but along comes a Caruso, or a Lanza, or a Gigli, and he can’t quite get over the hurdle. It’s because of one simple thing. The star sings, and when he’s singing he listens to himself; and while he’s listening he shapes it; and he opinionates it; and he shapes it around. If it isn’t round enough he rounds it more. And that sounds logical doesn’t it? It’s wrong! The superstar pictures the sound and knows what he wants to hear before he makes it! Singing is more the concept than anything. If we’ve got the right idea, then the muscles as they train more and more they become like a reflex and the reflexes respond to the image. Even if you’re trained beautifully and your image is a fear that you haven’t got high notes and it’ll never get there the reflexes won’t respond no matter how well trained you are. The epitome of it is you can say singing is absolutely mental. In the process of getting to realize that you have to take a lot of physical steps before you begin to see it, but it is true! The singer has to be in the consciousness and the mood. How does one establish a consciousness and a mood? You tend to become as you act. So if you pretend and try to get your feelings to act as you think they would act if you were doing it, then you’re getting in the consciousness. But if our consciousness is only on body and physical things then our mind is...

    Jon, you're such a high note junkie, lol....
    I think the skill is not just singing falsetto high notes, but learning to weave in and out of it on high and low falsetto note production....The skill of being able to integrate the notes and tonally meld them in with your full voice.

    Listen for the female backing vocal in the one above that often would be thought of as another instrument!
    Here's a good one for the younger folks who may have overlooked this master of the seemless transition!  The tonal beauty in the head voice and his moving in and out of falsetto is one of the best of my generation. Please watch to the end.  Notice the stability of the larynx and the quality of the tone.

    I liked it a lot, too. In fact, I have d/l'd it to my flash drive so that I can hear it in my car on the flight home. Get on the tollway, set the cruise at 80, try stay awake, most times. But this should wake me up.

    Great cover and I liked how you approached. Listening in my car, I thought the vocals had a bit too much sparkle in the EQ. Then, I remembered, I adjust the eq in my radio to deal with radio and if I had left it flat for USB media, it might sound more balanced. Because, at work, where I listened to it first on some fairly decent desk top speakers, it was alright.

    I liked the distortion on this.  Found it interesting that it most always started on the letter I which is a glottal attack.  You went a little soft on it after the first time around 1:59, I know those are the high notes but would've sounded great if you kept some of that compression.
