  1. First off AWESOME version, nice to here a different interpretation. I agree reminds me of a supp'ed up Paul Stanley, that said all good. my only suggestion on the upper parts in chorus roll more into the head, keep it firmer in the mask and keep it more forward.. over all excellent job.
  2. I have to answer this is parts and I have to be as honest as possible regardless of if people disagree. Your question can be taken in many ways. 1. If you love and enjoy it, makes you feel good? do it regardless of how it sounds or doesn't sound and feel good. 2. If you mean professional singing? Clearly it needs work, however there are many less than average vocalist who have huge careers and many incredible craftsmen that have no luck. In professional singing, timing seems to be more important than actually mastering of vocal ability. If you get lucky and have a hit, believe me the label/managers will be sure you get all the coaching you need.. until then, if that is your goal just keep improving what you've got, baby swans don't look to good, but they sure do blossom.
  3. Sounds good, to be very honest. If this is the style you are going to be singing and you don't have strain or problems, I would just keep doing what your doing and fine tune things as you go along. Sounds solid for that style of music. Not sure how old you are, but you may start having a hard time around 40 keep an eye on it and if you do you might have to adjust. Most Opera singers just start peaking around 40, because the voice fills out, many people in rock however have the opposite, because the registration of the voice firms, it doesn't always get darker in sound but the voice " feels" heavier and rock people then start pushing too much. You can hear it in these people if you compare there first recordings with their later recordings. Anne Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Geoff Tate, Steve Perry. Many ( Not Tate or Anne) like Stevie, Perry started getting nodes at that point from the pushing. In Opera singers it usually will enhance their natural qualities. it will make the coloratura whistle brighter, bass darker etc.
  4. Cool man, where in South Florida are you? I'm in RPB/West Palm Beach area now. Meant everything I said there. If you can record a few tunes next time you do them live and send me links so I can hear what is actually going on live. I will send you some appropriate exercises to help. On the studio recording it doesn't sound strained ( even with the fry, rasp, grit. ) it sounds very controlled. I would need to hear some of the live to see what your talking about.
  5. Awesome! You do what you do well. How's the throat? if you have no problems, keep it up. You have a sweet blend there, melodic, some rasp, some fry, and something even cooler. I can understand your every word,  A+ for that. You understand it is a skill.. 90% of people who do this style, just scream and sound like shit. You the heaven and hell sound, melodic on top, sweet over tones and a devil crawling out of a grave yard.
  6. Good job, I agree for a hobbyist decently executed, nice tone and instrument. I agree with everything above. That stated a few points I would add.   1. It has rough spots and needs work, somewhat forced.. that does mean back down it always needs support, you need to refine the support, focus and control. Understand this clearly even if you perfect it, even if you get it better than Steve Perry, Steve Perry is one of those voices where most people will not give that full prop. Voice teacher might, people in general might, but the Steve Perry purist will not. The same with the die hard Mariah fans, I know people who sing her songs better than her, but Mariah fans won't admit it lol.   2. Weight and registration , with the above stated you have 2 options to further develop that. If you are after a Steve Perry type sound there is an excellent video on the forum you can look up, he is really good at demonstrating the Lighter more agile registrations Steve Perry uses. Option 2 which I recommend is keep it your natural weight and tone, refine it and put your own spin on it.   3. Lips are very important for color and feel, Steve Perry sing with a broader, widened up lip, it give the vowels a different tone and is part of his signature sound. You might consider keep your voice in the fuller registration and trying that to lift the color of the sound without changing the weight as much.   Is this the type of material you prefer to sing? or do you sing many styles ?   Over all great job for a non - professional , If you put a few hours a week into serious training you will do really well.
  7. I'm not going to critic your anything. YOU know who you are as an artist. Beautiful rendition, Beautiful voice , Congrats! You own your performance, that is always the most important factor.
  8. Ok the reverb or no reverb doesn't matter to me   Sounds like you think it is higher than it is, start the note in your head more, prepare it before you sing it. Get on top of it, let it roll out more and support you need less air and more focus, support but not with the throat. Picture the music in your head and let it crescendo slightly like waves. It sounds like your trying to thin it, unless your natural voice is thin, you need to do it differently. It's a little guttural and that is a more lyrical piece.   There is a post in here on how Steve Perry sings, if you want it thinner follow that instruction and lighten it up the right way.
  9. Very nice phrasing and tone. Slightly off here and there, just a little hesitation in spots. Be more confident. That said, incredible for a beginner. You have the character down, now fine tune it. There are a few areas you can make it more staccato to emphasize and make your diction more crisp and in other areas ( where you crescendo ) allow your voice to expand more , don't push just let it roll more into the head and round it a bit. Great job!!!!
