  1. Great singing! I am hearing both Dio and a touch of Dickinson in a very cool mash up.
  2. Hi, I thought you did a really nice job on a singer that very few are brave enough to tackle lol. I thought overall you did good work negotiating the passagio danger notes. That is always the trick with Steve Perry Vocals the man lived in the Passagio for most male singers haha. Always hard to slip in and out of those areas. I would suggest keep working on it. You seem to be hitting the notes fine and the pitch is there. The tone could be just a bit more supported I believe and it would help you sound a little more like Perry. That being said the lighter sounds can be used to show the vulnerability of the songs lyric. A great job on a super hard singer and like you Perry is a tough singer for me because of his timber and tone are difficult for me to nail.
  3. No offence taken Collin571. The song is a late 90's ballad. I stayed true to the original melody. It is not a risky song or challenging from a range type of thing for me. I generally sing hard rock. My intent on this track was not to take a bunch of risks with the melody but rather to sing it with as much emotional depth that I could. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my track
  4. Hi, haven't posted anything in a bit. I really liked Jeremy's "Cat's in the Cradle" cover from several weeks back and as much as that song is fathers I thought I would do one for the mothers lol. I live in Orlando, Florida and it may be September but it is still very hot so I apologize for the sound of my Air Conditioner running in the back of my vocal track I tried to minimize it but it still bleeds through just a little. This song isn't particularly challenging from a range type of thing but was more about trying to convey "honest" emotion. I have several friends who lost their mother's pretty early on in their adult lives and as I tried to think about what they have told me about that and thinking about my own mother I actually had a hard time singing this because my throat actually lumped up a bit, some tough rocker I turned out to be :) Anyway here it is.
  5. Great Job Ellise! I have heard you sing this song before and this time you sang it with much more confidence, and power even your pitch has improved. I knew you could sing this song well, but I was really surprised by how much intensity you brought to the end with the riffing. You are really growing vocally, very proud of you.
  6. Javastorm, your songs are always a favorite of mine. I really wish I had a "Manly" voice haha but I have a fairly bright tone and even when I sing lower it always cuts a bit and I have to work at warming it up to my liking. Great job on this tune btw, very emotive and sung with fantastic urgency. Love the tag lines at the 4 min mark.
  7. Hi Jeremy, I always love your tone. You probably are a tenor or a very high baritone. Jack Black is an example of a tenor who does a good job of covering his tone and darkening it up a bit and I would say you probably would be able to do that as well. I enjoyed this version but most intimate type songs do sound best with just a single lead vox. It didn't ruin anything for me but I would love to hear a single vox mix of this song
  8. Sounding great! I would love to hear you singing with a live band or better yet we have to get you in the studio A.S.A.P.! You are super solid live but it would be fantastic to get you on a studio recording where you can do multiple takes and experiment and really craft a definitive vocal take. You have the voice its time to get you on a pro recording. If you have any material to record talk to me about it. I have lots of studio work behind me and would love to offer any guidance or advice as I would love to see you succeed. I don't want to say you are coasting because you have done much more than I was doing in High School but I learned really fast how fast youth can pass you by lol. You need to get on it girl, and start laying it down in the studio Let's make it happen soon.
  9. JonJon, I feel your pain about mixing. I am not the best at it either. I have used a few services where I uploaded files to a shared server and the studio pros mixed my tracks for me with very good results. It isn't super expensive either around 175ish per track. Not per hour etc and you are sent back reference mixes for approval or for making suggestions. It is fairly cheap but if you write a lot of music it can add up lol. Either way I love the track brother and will check out more of your writing.
  10. Hi JonJon. I enjoyed this track and would love to hear it again after a more thorough mix. I don't have much to critique here just some observation. I really liked the bridge where you doubled the vocal. It kind of put me in the mind of Paul Stanley a bit or specifically like a Kiss type of bridge. I like the tone of your voice and would love to hear it up front of the mix a bit more. I understand the early stages of mixing can be a chore but you are onto something with this song. I write a lot of originals as well and know how hard it can be to create the whole sound of the track. It can be much easier at times to just cover material. I feel the song is strong overall and just needs to have the mix punched up a bit. Great Job.
  11. Thank you so much ronws! I really do appreciate the feedback. I spend so much time writing music in a vacuum and its great to get input from other people on what they think. That being said, I know all art is subjective and what I write may not be right for everyone but I am always eager to find out what other people hear in my music. I am also glad you enjoyed "Understanding" it is very Foo Fighters. I have always liked that band and have been surprised that as big as they have been that you never have heard very many if any bands doing anything similar. When Pearl Jam hit, everybody had that vocal sound etc but Foos and STP and even Soundgarden were bands that you didn't really hear the copycat bands or even influence as much as Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam......just an observation lol.
  12. Thanks Gneetapp. That was what I meant about the song being a bit strange lol. Most of my other straight rock material stays very focused and flowing. This one was just strange and at the same time I liked it enough to just want to finish it lol. I write a lot of Fates Warning type prog music as well but still try to keep things transitioning smooth as much as I can. Thanks again for the feedback.
  13. Ellise, here is the song I was thinking could be cool to try.
  14. Thank you Ellise I have a few originals that would be cool to hear you sing on. They are a bit Foo Fighter-ish but a female vocal could be very interesting on them. I think it would turn out more like Pink or Kelly Clarkson with a female voice.
  15. Hi, Jeremy. I enjoyed this version. Its nice to see, you are posting songs in areas in which you are working to improve. I have found it just as hard to master the lower end of my range and more conversational type singing such as this as it is to hit soaring high note type things. I heard a few pitchy notes but nothing that was too far from the melody etc. I would keep exploring this side to your voice and focus on pitch, which I know is tough on the lower notes of the range but just keep trying to bring as much clarity and brightness to the lower notes don't worry about moving lots of air with them. Great effort.
  16. Cool mash up, from 2 great singers. Its interesting to hear these songs in a more piano based environment. Your voice sounds fantastic. I heard a few pitchy notes during some of the runs where you have to go from full voice into a lighter falsetto type of voice which is always tricky to pull off I love your voice and I don't hear anything very wrong here at all. I enjoyed the mash up, I wouldn't have initially heard Rhianna and Ariana together like this but I enjoyed it. You performance end of things gets better and better, I appreciated "The Sass" you showed here. That means attitude over in America you may have an Australian term that covers that better lol.
  17. Thank you for the feedback Robert. I have pretty much posted only cover tunes before but the work of all singers is to ultimately put your own original spin on all of our influences etc into new original music. It is sometimes difficult for even good singers to write good vocal melodies and performances on original material. When you are doing cover work all the basic decision making has been kind of done already, but on your own tunes its a blank slate to decide how you want to come across etc. I am glad you liked the work I have done here :). I won't be absent from the forum this long again its been hella crazy for me the last few months lol.
  18. Hi guys, I haven't been on the forum in quite a while. I have been busy working and also super busy with my various bands and projects. This is from my band Tair. Normally in this group I play guitar and sing harmony and some lead vox not unlike Jerry Cantrell. We do mainly rock in the vein of Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains type material but this song I wrote just didn't really fit into our normal material so I just finished it on my own because I hate to leave ideas unfinished lol. Anyways, I have mainly recorded cover songs for review on the forum but I have never posted my original material so I thought I would see what you think?
  19. Sounding very good indeed. You pitch is getting better than ever. I hear the scooping that Robert mentions and I believe you are capable of hitting the notes straight on if you want to although to me I think it may be a stylistic choice. I didn't distract me at all from your beautiful tone. That being said, Robert has a point that you should be capable of not scooping and maybe mix it up to include some non-scooped onsets as well. When I started singing I was only singing heavy music and developed all kinds of vocal tics associated with that kind of singing and had to practice properly to get away from it so I could sing other kinds of songs. The point I am making is its good to have a starting position like a Tennis player so that every move you make is from that base position which is strong onsets etc and keep that always going in practice to reinforce that good technique etc so that you have as much freedom to color your stylistic choices as much as you want but always have starting position so all your singing choices are made for the song you are singing and not just the only way you can sing. Of course almost all great singers have stylistic traits from Elton John, to Chris Cornell lol Also, Robert is correct you have really grown up right in front of our eyes and ears on this forum Also, you really need to record some videos like Robert suggested. You are a beautiful and gifted singer and with the right platform you could be a social media darling.
  20. Hi Simon, I haven't been on site for awhile as I have been very busy musically and otherwise lol. I agree with Roberts opinion. There are several areas you need to develop to keep your voice strong and connected and Roberts course will get you there. I do just want to mention this tho.....I don't believe it was horrible and I think the lesson to learn is what you probably are feeling is that you know you are not singing as proficiently as Rob Halford is and you know you need to improve. Most people even professionals sometimes will admit to me that they HATE the sound of their own voice coming back out of the speaker just as many people can hate to hear their own voice on an Voicemail message etc. I was guilty of pre-excusing my voice before playing people recordings of myself to blunt the attack I guess lol. If I mention it is horrible to begin with then nobody will probably add that to their critique haha. I still don't always love to hear my own voice and constantly try to improve but I have learned to know when I am in key and singing properly and whether that is tone that others like or not isn't my concern. As a singer you have to make the leap and not ask for permission to sing to an audience and offer disclaimers ahead of time. Embrace your voice and learn how to use it and develop the confidence in your instrument to entertain people and make music that YOU enjoy. Once you do this and have fun the audience will come along with you even if you don't love your voice always remember that John Lennon hated the sound of his voice and was constantly looking for ways to process it so he could tolerate it. I feel your pain brother, one of the best compliments a friend gave me on an early recording was that "it sounds great, it doesn't even sound like you" lol. Not that I was trying to sound like anyone else but rather that he also understood my insecurity at that time with my voice. Train with Robert and the rest will fall into place. If you want to sing like Halford etc you are at the right place.
  21. That's fantastic! I can't wait to hear you recorded properly with a good condenser mic etc. You have a very marketable voice and given the proper treatment can stand next to any great singer I have heard. Keep us posted on any recording plans
  22. Hi Ellise, love the song! I agree with Robert. You are really a star in the making and as much as talent is needed I would say that sometimes today if the production isn't what people are used to seeing/hearing they don't pay as much attention. I don't like this as I can hear what an amazing voice you have but to so many people if something distracts them from the way they are used to hearing things etc they can tune out fast. You are poised to make it. You have the talent, drive and looks to do it. I would really try to start getting pro recordings of your voice. If there are any recording schools in your area you should see if they need any session singers for the students to work with. There is a big school in Orlando and I know they have recording labs with students where the recording that are made you get to keep. Plus they sometimes have video programs as well they could help you with your vids as well. I know lots of these students and they are very eager for people to work with/experiment on lol. Point is you are ready for the next level. I can tell you that you have what it takes and have a very mature talent for your age. That being said I can tell you that TIME FLIES BY lol (boy does it ever) and a Beautiful and talented 17-20 year old is sooooo much more impressive and easier to get somewhere in the industry than an older artist. I believe its just because if you are really a great singer etc but are like 30 everyone is like (Eh, they should be good by now, lol) But if you strike while you are still young you will have such an advantage. I can see you have the drive. The competitions etc you have the talent. You really need to just work on the last bits and you will make it as an artist I am sure. I wish I had a time machine and could talk to a 16-17 year old me, I really missed the boat haha.
  23. A great version of one of my ALL TIME favorite songs from an amazing singer/musician! Love Sarah McLachlan and you really did a great job of taking the etherealness of the original and gave it a stripped down soulfulness that I think is fantastic. I would kill for this much soul in my voice. Super job brother!
  24. I like both ideas. I have a home recording setup but when I am in "Idea Collection" mode I tend to just turn on a mic or a guitar etc and lay down the ideas quick and dirty lol. I will often do this until I have maybe a half hour or more of song ideas. I wrote a song the other day when I went back to the beginning of a 45 min doodle location and had forgot all about the ideas I put down at the beginning of the song location! I refined it etc. but I think trying to capture the vibe is the most important thing when trying to archive an ideas to develop later.
  25. Beautiful Job Ellise. You really are building up quite a set list and a set of pipes. I agree with Robert I can hear the strength in your voice increasing and you are still growing as a stylist too! I am a huge fan of your talent and I expect to see you go very far. Hope you and your family have a great Holiday.
