  4. Hello guys! I don't know anyone else to talk about this with, so I suppose people like you- who like to sing- would maybe understand me. I don't know if this is the right forum or even site to write this, but I'm giving it a try. Music and singing truly is what keeps me going, and it's always been a part of me, and truly what I define myself with. You can tell me I suck at playing piano, that I'm not funny, that I'm not good-looking, that I'm worthless etc etc and I'd be like "oh ok" but if you tell me I suck at singing- it will truly crush me and I would cry. And I don't cry about anything. That's how important singing is to me and how miserable I feel, because singing is truly the only way I can express myself - to myself. You see, I don't ever really sing in front anyone else. It's my own sacred ritual. And if I'm not even good at that... Truly what am I even living for? I'm too shy to do real life vocal training at this moment. But I've been doing random vocal exercises at home, but never found anything that really works. I feel like everything is a part of some plan that costs $10000 and they don't really give me anything more than that. SO I would appreciate hearing what you think I should be doing to improve my singing even a little. Like stable exercises that I can do daily. I know it sounds ignorant but I really don't want to hear that I should get over it or to stop doubting my worth based on my singing. Because I truly do and will never ever stop doing that. Just like a bird is made to fly I feel like singing is my flying. But my wings are broken. Just like my heart. I'm sorry if you clicked the video and didn't like it. I really thought I sounded OK on it and sent it to a friend who told me I was better at other things. I probably seem weak saying this but my heart is filled with sadness now. Thank you

  6. We all know pitch is important but do you think we sometimes focus too much on it? A perfect example is my Dad. Whenever my families watching The Voice or American Idol or any other sort of singing show. The singers/singer will do an amazing performance, but because they miss a few notes they are terrible in my dad's eyes. I have heard him say things about many now famous singers that they will never be successful because they don't sing with perfect pitch. He has said this about Chris Cornell, Brendon Urie, Jeff Buckley, at least 60% of everybody on the voices (excluding auditions) and many more. To him if a singer sings with great emotion yet misses a couple of his notes it was a bad performance. Yet if someone sings with perfect pitch yet does nothing interesting it was a good performance. My Dad has been singing for 30+ years yet has never learned to sing above his break because he is so focused on pitch. Do you know anyone else that has this perfect pitch curse? It has caused a lot of drama in my family. thoughts?
  7. Hello I am having real trouble finding my falsetto, I can't make that effortless sound, it is always strained. I was always able to make a voice that I thought was falsetto, but I got to the conclusion that is flageolet instead. I got really used to it and it is relaxed, and really sounds like falsetto, but I think it isn't falsetto mainly because: - It isn't connected to chest voice. I know sometimes it's difficult to connect head and chest voice, but this is extremely disconnected, it is a different world. - I am able to transition smoothly from whistle to this flageolet. Not trying hard at all, just lowering the pitch from whistle, I end up in this voice. This is as close to a relaxed falsetto that I can get. So, any advice on how to find that relaxed falsetto? Maybe I am still unable to do it because I have those muscles untrained?   8. Hi everyone, I asked for feedback here over a year ago and really took the advice to heart! I've been practicing some more, but feel that I've kind of hit a wall with improvement. I want to become technically better and have a stronger voice (I feel I sound weak when I sing and I sound a bit flat) and I would like better vocal control.   9. I am hoping to audition andI have to submit an online video. It's all accapella. Please give me your very honest feedback about my voice. Why does my tone change so much and sound so different? My chest voice to me sounds bad, like almost manly, but it is easiest for me to sing. While my head voice sound like it has a better tone, I get physically tired singing it and I can't seem to breathe right no matter how hard I practice from the diaphragm. Worse, my left side of the throat hurts sometimes. What vocal range am I? I noticed I talk very deeply and it hurts as well. I've always felt my voice is very 'bahh'bahh' like..almost gravelly. It doesn't have that crystal clear sharp voice I hear in most voices. How can i achieve that? Are my vocal cords damaged? My higher notes are unstable--it can either hit right or get REALLY pitchy. What am I doing wrong? What kind of voice/larynx/technique should i use to ensure a consistently good tone? What do you think are my biggest problems with my voice in your opinion?   10. I have recently begun teaching vocal lessons to a college student whose main instrument is not her voice. Her air support is strong in both her chest voice and head voice, but she is struggling to transition between the two. The transition is extremely abrupt and causes her to lose confidence in herself. What vocal workouts and exercises may be helpful when working on her mixed voice and transitions?
  11. Hi guys, I'm 31 years old. I've always been bad at singing, but I'd like to see if I can become pleasant to listen to-- at least a little. I can play music by ear on a few instruments, so I'd like to think I can discern my own pitch. So where do I start? What's the plan?? Thanks, Mike
  12. If you're doing it wrong. I tried for years to match these guys who were up in tenor range, because a lot of guys I listened to were tenors. I couldn't do it without flipping into falsetto and ending up with a completely different tone. I finally start working with somebody who knows and not only do I find I'm getting up in that range, I find out that I'm a tenor! After believing for 8 years that I'm a baritone. I got several opinions on that. Some thought I was a baritone, some weren't sure. It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how many times you do something or how hard you try if you're doing it wrong. Failure does not mean you can't do something. An important lesson.
  13. Questions: 1. Can fapping daily for a long time effect your voice from the hormones and all the technical stuff that happens? Can it (in a process) change your pitch a little, help (or) go against expansion of the vocal range, and can it make the voice more "unreliable" and less solid (especially on the notes that close to the end of your range) ? 2. I need a help about finding a couple of formats for singing exercises. It's a pretty hard work (I Guess) to find these formats, I just want you to know that I really appreciate your help ! 3. What exercise would you recommend to help with the flexibility in the higher notes, but those who are more close to the end of the range. what exercise would make them more "reliable" or it's just that you need to expand your range more to make them more central and reliable. 4.   14. Hello Fellow TMVW members! Humbling though it may be, I thought I would share a track I'm working on, (Beatles - In My Life) and the vocal "sculpting" process I go through in an effort to record my best performance. (I'd never share unfinished tracks except to friends and in this forum . . . plain vanity) I've had a lot of experience analyzing my vocals for recordings, I never quite knew how to articulate the process I was engaging in nearly as well as after having gone through The Four Pillars of Singing, learning the "talk track" I've heard Robert Lunte utilize across many hours of lecture videos! Once one is familiar enough with these "mechanisms" for mending, strengthening, or otherwise fine tuning a vocal line, the mystery about what to do goes away! Rob's techniques are structured in a simple, yet meticulous sequence that really does create the feeling of having a vocal sculpting tool box! I'm posting this both as a subject of interest to others who may be starting out with this type of challenge, and as a means of accountability for me to complete the process, which has been brutal for me due to inexperience with the recording software. It's good for me though, as I intend to record several old hit favorite song interpretations in the coming months. I'll post my final "sculpture" here for this track when I finally complete it. "Work to be done" on this vocal performance is: Pitchy lyrics / appaggio drop out, vowel mods for best resonance, better phrasing, embouchure brightening, slight lightening of mass throughout, . . . . I'm sure there's more, also, rhythm guitar mistakes, and guitar solo is not quite tight yet, not happy with the effects on my voice yet either. I'm contemplating leaving the last "in my life" line unresolved like it is now. I was trying to sing that last half of the last line and had to quit recording due to a leaf blower. I think i'll like it that way, maybe with a high harmony over the top. Lastly, I may end up using a different mic than I did for this take. One thing that clearly gets hammered home in this process is that performing live is a far more forgiving environment than being under the microscope of a recording. Peace, k

Unique to the “Maestro’s” approach was his method for expanding vocal range into multiple “registers”, or what we would refer to today at TVS as, "Bridging & Connecting". Maestro was also keen on eliminating psychological barriers that hinder singers’ freedom of expression, by use of creative visualization techniques and development of healthy auditory imagery for singing. One day, Nate Burch, one of my students from Seattle, came to the lesson with an old coffee stained piece of paper that had a hand written, transcribed lecture from Maestro Kyle on it. And that sounds logical doesn’t it? It’s wrong! The superstar pictures the sound and knows what he wants to hear before he makes it! Singing is more the concept than anything. If we’ve got the right idea, then the muscles as they train more and more they become like a reflex and the reflexes respond to the image. Even if you’re trained beautifully and your image is a fear that you haven’t got high notes and it’ll never get there the reflexes won’t respond no matter how well trained you are. The epitome of it is you can say singing is absolutely mental. In the process of getting to realize that you have to take a lot of physical steps before you begin to see it, but it is true! The singer has to be in the consciousness and the mood. How does one establish a consciousness and a mood? You tend to become as you act. So if you pretend and try to get your feelings to act as you think they would act if you were doing it, then you’re getting in the consciousness.   18. Lucky for me, I healed in two days! Yes, this is a personal story, a cautionary tale of the vocal danger of over confidence, which can fuel lack of training, and lead to injury! It's a slice of humble pie for me to tell about this, especially with the influential voice of TVS & this TMVW community always echoing in my mind. So here's what shut off the echo (my excuse). A friend of mine gave me a call to invite me to jam with an old cover band he is considering reforming. I had not had the chance to jam with local musicians since I was last living where I am now some 8 years ago. Back then, my friend (the drummer), had me sing as a temporary fill in for his band since I couldn't commit to long term at the time. I was amped about singing live hard rock with some talented players! On the way to the jam, in the car, I made a feeble attempt at "tracking" (nasals) with the radio. Failed to get a proper sound check and sound level. I walked in to the rehearsal room (garage studio) and within a few minutes, the PA was flipped on, the guys were warmed up and I chose this song off the set list on the wall, an old favorite to start off the night: Song went great, these kats are tight! I was having a good time yet, as soon as we were done with that song I knew instantly I had very little passaggio left! I could feel it when I would just softly sing a scale. I told the guys the bad news, THEN had us get my mic level right, and was expecting the jam to be ruined however, I was surprised to discover that the songs we then played, I was able to gimp through them relying only on M1 and the upper end of M2. The guys said, "dude you sound fine, there's nothing wrong with your voice!" That gave me a chuckle and I proceeded to tell them a brief explanation of passaggio. Then, the last song we played for the night helped them see exactly what I was talking about. The guitarist (who could sing quite well) had to take over. Much of this song is in the passaggio for me. I was quite bummed as I'm a big Adams fan, love singing any of his tunes! So, In my defense, I was sort of swept off my feet in the excitement of getting to jam after years of missing it! I forgot the most basic elements of protecting the voice from damage. Singing too loud (due to no sound check, lead vocal mic too low), with distortion, WITHOUT proper appaggio (mainly diaphragmatic support) I've got no real excuse in forgetting to support, complete failure as a vocal athlete. At least I can say, it won't happen again! So there's that, don't do what I did! Sing every day! Always sound check! Train, Train, Train! peace, k

  20. Hi! I'm new-ish to this forum, posting here for the very first time because I'm super excited to share my progress. I'm male, 23, started taking singing lessons only 2 months ago. Prior to that I was a rubbish singer. I'd read a lot about vocal technique in the past i.e. chest, head voice etc. but it was all rather abstract - especially when it came to the mysterious mixed voice (what the what?). Anyway, I couldn't sing for my life until recently when I bit the bullet and started seeing a voice teacher near where I live. Only 2 months later and I CANNOT believe the progress I have made! This recording was taken today - I usually record myself doing vocal exercises at home - and has me doing a vocal slider up to C5 while adding some cord closure and lots of support. Although I could only hold the note in full voice for a couple of seconds, I managed to get a tinge of vibrato in there and the release felt AMAZING! 2 months ago I was straining to even hit C5 in falsetto! https://vocaroo.com/i/s0ecsVplMXIH Just goes to show that practice and patience works!
  21. I am working with a new voice student. She has been a piccolo and flute 8+ years. I am trying to find some effective warm-ups for her. She is able to match pitch and has more confidence singing in her lower range. She has been recently singing with a very pressed sound and is very tense when beginning warm-ups. Trying to find warm-ups to help combat these things!

  23. I know I have good ears because I can easily hear the flaws in my voice, and I'm a mixing engineer. I have a flexible voice and I can easily sing fast runs and such. But I noticed that I can't quite keep singing one note without it bending up or down slightly Say I wanted to sing the C note for 10 seconds, I could hold it for the first 2 or 3 seconds, but then there's a small bump either moving my voice up or down, which makes me sound off key. I also know that it's because I can't keep my breath flowing at one speed without changing. So basically, I have a problem with keeping my breathing speed to be consistent, and when my breathing speed changes, it affects the pitch of my voice. But I don't know what kind of exercise Is the most efficient to help me with this. I'm also a smoker which I know affects my breathing but not sure if it has anything to do with this specific problem. Does anyone know what I should do to be able to do this?
