Bruce or Tom?

Bruce Dickinson and Tom Jones both singing the same tune...Both are great singers.

When I listen to the diffrences in their voices...distinct differences, I found myself automatically gravitating to Tom Jone's voice as being the more likable one.

I think (maybe) it's because Tom's voice is more closer to my own voice than Bruce's.

It's really quite interesting how we might select one voice over another to like, admire, want to sing like, etc.

Now, listen to both in any order, but watch both completely.

Without analyzing, Who's voice do you favor?

Don't overthink it, just go by your immediate feelings. Don't even try to explain why you might prefer one over the other.

I'd be curious to know that you folks think.

Again, I'm not looking for why..just who's voice you personally prefer?

Just reply.... Bruce or Tom.  Let's see what happens.

Tom. I find the richness of his timbre distinctive. Not a huge fan of this song in general though and musically I prefer Maiden's output.

Tom has a unique voice but I often find the compositions a bit schmaltzy.  Similar feelings with some of Jackie Wilson's material.

Bruce was a songwriter and more of a complete musician. Tom Jones was the guy with the cool voice who sang kind of cheesy material. When both singers sing cheese material it doesn't reflect well on Bruce.

Another question is what if Tom Jones was a great songwriter? Wonder what that would sound like?

no way to objectively reply. Tom is IN his element and Bruce is not. like Killer said, let Tom sing 'Where Eagles Dare' or 'Run to the Hills' and then we can compare

I'll say Bruce..since everyone else said Tom lol.

I also dig the tone on the "why" at 2:35

Folks,

Just answer Bruce or Tom.  Don't voice why.  Hold that in for yourself.

You see, I feel there's some very deep rooted reason(s) we are picking one over the other......

Something very primal, very deep in our subconscious mind.  Kind of why we consider Opera singer's voices so beautitful.

Tom. I like his tone on this song. I also admit that I might be affected by having always heard the Tom version, so, that is the standard, good or bad.

I agree with Jon and others. Let's see Tom do an IM song. Or even something from Bruce's solo career, like"Tattooed Millionaire."

Sorry, Bob, I know you are trying to lead somewhere with a blind comparison, as it were, but I cannot escape my elephantine memory. The tone of Tom is more pleasing on this song, but Bruce was also fun and other than preferring the original because that is what I heard as a young lad, I don't really want to pit the two against each other.

I just don't.

Its different keys (Bruce is singing it higher), so when you compare one with the other the lower version will sound more dramatic/more sad in comparision to the higher one, which will sound a bit more happy/liveful. and of course this has some implications on how both singers deal with the higher passages.

Could be on a conscious level......but I believe it's somethng very deep inside us, something we're not cognizant of.

It's just how I feel.

its very possible.   I was involved in an alien abduction once. Its weird...they tried to program me to like Bob Dylan but it never took so they dumped me back down here

Yeah, Bruce singing one note higher is really messing up the comparison. Bruce also plays a bit with his larynx here. At the points where he puts it a little lower I'm inclined to believe that he could probably match the richness of Tom's sound if he wanted. Put the song one note lower on top of this and I think he would sound VERY close to Tom.

my problem is....I hate the song in general lol. Schmaltzy lawrence welkish stuff.

Watching Bruce sing that is sort of like watching Michael Jordan play....baseball

Pretty much exactly my thoughts. I don't like the song so I (subconsciously or consciously) like the more humorous approach of Bruce :P To sing such a song you really need the ability to make fun of yourself.

That explains a lot. :24:

Also, expecting singers to shut up and only do one thing is like herding cats. How's that working? For anyone?

Brother Ron/Folks,

Sorry if you feel I was trying to censor you.

It's not that I don't value or wish to hear your thoughts and opinions. I just wanted to begin with a reply where we didn't analyze it beforehand.

You know......like those tests where you reply with the first thing that comes to your mind?  I'm very fascinated by instant replies.

I think it's hard to not analyze. Maybe because we think too much about singing. A "non-singer" might simply answer and NOT be able to explain why. But, right now, it's like saying "step to the left but don't move your left foot. Or your right foot."

I like Tom's tone, though Bruce sang well. But I cannot say that without recognizing that I like how Bruce sang that song and other songs.

I don't know what the upshot or goal of just saying which one is preferred will be. I could say, from my own viewpoint, that while all singers could sing all songs, I am not going to like them on every song, even some of their own, let alone others. And that, I could probably not define.
