TMV World Legacy Member Javastorm Posted March 8, 2016 TMV World Legacy Member Posted March 8, 2016 https://app.box.com/s/1o80rydp0b6dbdw0r7hi4tb255w6n4b7 I've been listening to Mariah's older work recently and wanted to try one of her songs that didn't employ the whistle register. In this key, the top note is C#5, on "SOMEthing just went wrong" but I ended up changing the melody in that line. I did try to do the 4 or 5 B4's and C5's in the rest of the song though. This song was challenging dynamically and for a million other reasons - especially the really low verses and much higher choruses. I was trying to get comfortable in that mixed/head voice sort of configuration for the second half of the song. I had to keep reminding myself to keep my soft palate raised for those weird sections of the chorus that sit around A4. Any and all feedback welcome! 2 "The journey in between what you once were and who you are now becoming is where the dance of life really takes place." -B. De Angelis My SoundCloud
TMV World Legacy Member Gneetapp Posted March 8, 2016 TMV World Legacy Member Posted March 8, 2016 I liked Javastorm. You got such nice tone in your voice that it is a really good match for this song. I think you sound very good and pass on emotion. You might be straining just a little bit on the high notes, but it could be just a matter of putting more time on this song until the coordinations become more natural for your body. Hopefully the more experienced guys will give you better technical advice. Cheers 1
Moderator & Review Specialist Gsoul82 Posted March 13, 2016 Moderator & Review Specialist Posted March 13, 2016 One thing I admire about you is how you're able to convey the emotion. In all of the covers I've heard so far, you sound like you mean what you are singing. I'm still working on that. Like Gnee said, when you go up there in full voice, the intensity is there, but the pitch is off here and there. Besides the pitch in a few places, not a bad attempt. Runs were okay. Sounds like the falsetto thing might still be there. Keep hammering it. This is a Mariah Carey song. It's good that you're challenging yourself by choosing songs that are not easy and trying things like changing up the melody. That's how you're going to get better. 1 "Quitters Never Win"
TMV World Legacy Member Javastorm Posted March 13, 2016 Author TMV World Legacy Member Posted March 13, 2016 Thanks for listening Gnee and G! I think one thing I could do better with harder songs is splitting up the recording sessions instead of trying to chug through the whole song in one go. I redid some sections of the song this morning in the first chorus, the bridge, and the chorus after the key change. TMV World Legacy Member ronws Posted March 13, 2016 TMV World Legacy Member Posted March 13, 2016 I have only listened to this second version and I liked it. Remember, and I had to learn for myself, recording is NOT like live performance. Recording different parts with rests in between is how it is usually done. Live, you would change the arrangement, anyway. I like the tones in your voice. Bits of Peter Cetera and Michael Bolton in there make it soul-icious. 1
