An idea I have had for a while.

In light of the sometimes argumentative/hardcore debate vibe of online forums....lets go the opposite way and work TOGETHER and record a song.

How would this work? Dunno but I can put out some suggestions. I would be willing to do most of the legwork. IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE A WORLD BEATER....JUST SOMETHING FOR FUN AND CAMARADERIE!

1) I can write a basic song and record the rhythm track etc. We can vote on the key lol.

2) Either I, or all of us together, can write some basic lyrics.

3)

a.) depending on how many brave people step up, we can subdivide the song parts. 1 guy sings first verse, another guy 2nd verse, a couple guys on the chorus. Someone with some soul and melisma can give some nice fills etc.

b.) or, I can just sing a demo of the whole song and then each person can sing whatever part of the song they want to sing etc

4) I'll put an mp3 of the rhythm track and you can import it into your DAW and then everyone can send me a wav of JUST their vocal and I can put it into the song and mix it all etc

My thinking is that the verses will be basic chest voice stuff and pretty easy, then maybe the chorus will step up a bit into headvoice etc. The bridge of course is where people can get creative and do their best Robert Plant vibe or whatever else they want to do.

I havent thought it thru to the nth degree but it could be a really fun thing and the details will work themselves out.

Any brave volunteers??

We can vote on the general vibe of the song, keeping in mind im an "old timer" so its going to be in the vague ballpark of LedZep/Beatles/VanHalen, with maybe a touch of grunge

Edit. after much discussion blah blah, here is what we currently have:

ok guys. I have uploaded all pertinent files to box.com.  We can try these links to see if they work

song with vocals  https://app.box.com/s/qd4imrazmdd9zcmpkck87usmw32hlg7l

Rhythm track without vocals. Use this in your DawDAW at 130 bpm https://app.box.com/s/u8u6g6vxs0x5hy77cpw6z82n3rcei1yj

MP3 rhythm track 11.3mb https://app.box.com/s/3hn868cn7ugzlwpm7e6swvtla4orh2nv

Total vocal track, isolated. if you want to bring this into your DAW for reference etc. https://app.box.com/s/3dxy8vub6f9l5liywnamo29xaukhfq6r

And if you want to hear the harmonies broken down

Main chorus part https://app.box.com/s/z96dq4hsu1nain204e3q1yvotlmcclon

Chorus middle harmony https://app.box.com/s/5lc9f79znf6jyr3nj61vpac4du1wsqko

Chorus high harmony https://app.box.com/s/57e8hsloikcjn78se2shpt09wz9y1lk4

Those parts were mixed to start at the beginning of the song. Import them to the beginning of the song and they will line up correctly etc

to send me files set up a free account at box.com. upload your files. share them and either post the share link in the thread or PM it to me

on your recording levels. Dont try to go super hot right up to 0db. its digital so there is no need. We dont want to clip. just get a decent level like 3/4 of your meter or whatever

Dry vocals etc.

----------------

Edit:

The chords to the song. Only for the brave of heart

Do you have any Rhythm tracks laid down? My main job back in the day was Bass player. Mostly along the lines of Country, Southern Rock and Blues, Classic Rock also. If you already have A basic Layout with or without words we could get started.

I'd do it but unless you want to hear something that sounds like a cross between a frighten cat and Rosanne Barr on a bad hair day it would be prudent not to include myself. Maybe one day though!

Add what you can add, let others decide if it is Rosanne Barr or Robert Plant/Dio/Bruce..............Besides sometimes a frightened cat is just the sound you are looking for.

I have approximately 1.2 million tracks of guitar with drums. Some older, some brand new. I was thinking of doing something really basic for this, along the lines of maybe Bad Company or the Layla album or a basic LEd Zep feel maybe. Something where a basic chest voice type vibe would work on the verses.

My stuff that I write for myself is usually more along the lines of really light metal like a glam metal vibe.

If ya'll want you can go to wikiloops and look under my name. I have many tracks laid down, for instance http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-72377.php

Sort of light metal vibe http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-70850.php

Aerosmith vibe http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-53514.php

I literally have so many tracks done that I have forgotten most of them exist http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-70528.php

I have way more tracks which arent on wikiloops. A lot of them are in that same vibe. My stuff is a little better for screaming type styles, thats why I was thinking of doing a more basic rock song so we can all have fun and contribute.

MDEW, I had planned on just doing all of the music, including bass, myself, just to keep it simple so the project wouldnt be a total logistical nightmare

Mainly just looking to get several peeps on vocals...like "we are the world" lol

We have done something similar to this in the past with the TMV song, we actually have one completed and there is another one in production now but hasn't had much momentum.  However, if you can get something together I'd be happy to participate.

yeah, imma have to check them out...havent heard that yet.

I just see it as a way that people can step out with their singing a bit. Some people dont play instruments etc.

I mean, isnt this what all of the practice is for?

This could be an interesting one since it has a long breakdown section. If we could get some nice melisma contributions we could have a nice wacky "whole lotta love" vibe in the long breakdown/bridge. Ive got a pretty strong cut and paste game lol

http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-24164.php

I actually did like a 9 part gregorian chant myself on this like 2 years ago in that bridge section lol. That was before I knew anything about singing at all.

Zep vibe http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-24260.php

sort of 70s vibe http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-25649.php

Montrose style with bass. This might be a good candidate for us since it has a nice construction http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-25750.php

Another ready for vocals jam. I had a big creative output in late 2014 after not recording music for like 10 years lol. http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-25921.php

Basic strutting Zep vibe. Named after John Henry Bonham http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-28253.php

and this one, wow, lots of emotion http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-31585.php

Its bedtime. if anyone sparks to any of these, speak up lol

Hey, I checked out a few of your track samples and really dig them.  Definitely already got a great start, just need some ideas and lyrics.  Would be fun to have a song in this kinda bombastic fun style:

Something a lot of people here could hop on board with.

Good luck with that.

The original TMV song from years ago was started by Marcus and Jens. And went exactly nowhere because trying to get prima donna singers together is like herding cats.

So, the idea came up again. I even came up with a song idea, ripping off a version of a riff I wrote for an instrumental piece. And it went exactly nowhere, though no one exactly pooped on it, it was just a non-starter.

Then my brother stepped in with his studio and stuff and powers that be appointed him official creator of a new TMV song.

And it went nowhere.

Yes, this has been done before, or at least someone did a song for the TMV World Forum... this has actually become TMV World Legend... enjoy:

Then there was a 2nd attempt at this and it died. We never got the bed track from SLS as I recall:

Here is how I think this needs to be done, we are going to try this again:

- Someone must step up and take ownership for production; bed track, mixing, etc..

- We need a basic backing track that can be the result of a poll on style.

- Then people can either write lyrics for the entire song or choose to write lyrics for certain parts... independent of what other people are doing.

- They also sing their parts.

- Participants provided to the producer a dry vocal track without the backing track or any effects so our elected producer can then comp. the tracks into the master composition.. and each vocal part with have a fairly similar levels, effects, same producer treating the every piece the same.

- Mixed and published.

What we end up with is something that no doubt will be fun and have some humor to it... because each verse will be a different voice, style, approach, skill set and lyrics... but that is the point, isn't it? Kind of like a "we are the world", but without planning it out ahead of time...

Or

Someone writes a bed track AND lyrics and parts are assigned, just like a "We Are The World"...

- so have fun with something that is written or us... bed + lyrics.

or

- have fun with something that is cobbled together with unpredictable parts for more chaos, humor or unexpected twists.

Either way is fine... I tend to lean more towards something that is already written for the team, because it will come off as a bit more serious and polished that way... at least the lyrics will have cohesion. Something that comes off well done, say with Daniel, then Felipe, then me, then Bob, then Jon, then ??? handing off.. could actually turn out to be HELLA cool and a great promotional idea... Similar to Geoff's "TMV Challenge", we could do this a couple times a year...

I actually have an archive of hundreds of original bed tracks from bands through the years that could be repurposed for this, but it would take some time to select the best track to make it work... we need something that has a good repetition of 10 versions and a chorus that would repeat at least four times.

Basically I think what this is hitting at is a project called, "We Are The Modern Vocalist World"... song.

whats your best 2 or 3 notes to belt with nice control etc? G4, A4, B4? some other?

Are you writing melody ? Because if your not writing the melody , then your question is a bit irrelevant because people will si g the notes they want to sing .

And if you are writing melody , then you are , to some extent , implying that you are also going to write the lyrics. Is this a song that already exists? I thought we were discussing an original?
