Billy Budapest
I have it. First let me say- Ken is a very cool guy. He includes a short skype lesson if you have questions and he helped me a bit with his dvds. He'd be a very cool teacher to actually have a real lesson with. It may just be that I've been doing this so long (30 years) that not a lot is new to me. I don't know about you guys, but I'm constantly looking for the silver bullet that will allow me to sing day in, day out at the top of my game and not have to deal with recovery time. I am still trying to solve that issue. Ken's the real deal and his DVDs are very good. However- I PERSONALLY would do better with actual lessons and I recommend those to anyone. Ken's gotta ton of info in the dvds, but you really need someone THERE to let you know if you're doing things correctly. For me, the more I'd practice with the dvds, the more difficulty I had at my gigs. I say this with ANY program, not just Kens. I dunno about you guys, but I'll get the latest and greatest program and work on it all the time... and then be so burned out by gig time that it ends up messing me up more than anything else. I would recommend getting a good foundation with a good teacher- THEN I would use Ken's stuff to keep in shape and grow. I'd use any system to grow, but I prefer Ken's over say, Manning's stuff as it's more what I do. YMMV
VideoHere
Does anybody have it ? If yes, could you please share some info/feedback about it ? Cheers, Thanos i have lesson 1. you get the intro to vowel modification, and some solid (but basic) exercises. the thing i liked most was ken's really showing you the way to open up everything in order to sing with an open throat. all the major basics are covered in detail. it's a little pricey though. VideoHere
Just to clarify, the "Shout" program is a separate thing from the 3 stages. I'm interested in hearing about it too, if anybody knows anything. Bob, I've been toying with the idea of checking out lesson 1... you still prefer Lugo's program for a daily workout? i love lugo's exercises.....it's kinda like if you ever worked out, doing supersets!! roger kain is another one i like for exercises. gno
I don't have Shout yet. I'm in the middle of Stage 3 currently but I am definitely interested in Shout - not really sure what it's all about. After I'm done with Stage 3 I was going to try to master CVT's distortion. Bob - are you doing the Stage 1 excersizes on a daily basis? How is it coming? akarawd
Yeap, "Shout" is a completely different program to the main one (I have that and I'm more than happy with it). Not quite sure what "shout" is about though.

akarawd
I got "Shout!" yesterday and went quickly through the clips. He applies his technique on real songs, breaks down each phrase and explains how they're sang.

kentamplin
Hey guys. sorry I haven't had a lot of time to post...life has been crazy... Shout! THE SECRET TO LIVE SINGING has about 50 audio song demonstrations from: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Judas Priest, ZZ Top, The O’Jays, Creedence, Bee Gees, The Jackson 5, Kool & The Gang, KC & The Sunshine Band, Al Green, Elvis, Grand Funk...the list goes on. I do a take-down of about 12 of the harder to sing songs on video and break them down line by line to show you how to song them well. Then, the rest of the 50-ish trax are audio demontrations along with corresponding, well recorded Karaoke tracks I have put together over the years from my film and TV library recorded with some of the world's greatest musicians. I don't know that I would recommend this DVD if you have not already done my stages OR you have a really good command and working knowldge of the voice. Yes Shout! will help you, but more end user Mask Technique and phrasing placement stuff. It's not about the core technique of singing but about building the technique you have been learning into live application. This is true for my Licks & Tricks DVD as well. Don't buy it if you are just starting out. I take much of the "soul licks" I have learned over the years (which takse a lifetime to accrue buy by the way) and break down each lick showing how to inegrate these licks into your music. I also have posted some of my all time favorite soul singers' videos on the site as well. This is more like learning "Adele meets Paul Rogers meets Aretha Franklin/Etta James...." I hope everyone is well. -KT
akarawd
I thought I'd mail Ken so he can give all the details himself (response above). Geno, no, mostly mask and phrasing.
VideoHere
These products may be a way for a singer to build up a style they're unfamiliar with, but without a solid foundation they're screwed. Even at that, I wonder how much value they're really worth? If someone's completely alien to a style I can see these systems being helpful. But if someone's been listening to a certain style they find enjoyable, they're going to sympathetically pick up a lot of it... it's just a question of internalizing it within their instrument. There's no system necessary in that case. hi russ, are you saying you don't think these "study/practise at home programs" all of them, where you're on your own don't work? VideoHere
I don't find them to be a holy grail, like many make them out to be. Singing is as nuts and bolts as changing the oil in a car. While some make say there's a revolutionary way to change your oil, by using a fresh blue rag, or some pretty neat gloves. ... is it really a new thing? Is it revolutionary? No....... I am not aware of any study at home course will teach a singer how to lose tensions they're not aware of... Nor am I aware of any 'work at home' courses that line up a potential singer with their ideal fach to expedite training.... For instance... tenore comico versus a spinto... how would audio samples of a spinto singing help a comico? Unless one wants to watch a comico's head explode trying to imitate a spinto's sound.... and vice versa... I studied with a very light leggiero tenor... and had great difficulty working on onsets because I tried to imitate his sounds. Audio samples have their place... giving a singer an understanding of how certain sounds/styles are generated.. and that's the strength of a course like Ken's. To give someone an idea of how to create a certain sound/style. However... as in the case of a Geoff Tate or a Steven Tyler... I'm not sure how many mention how bad a technique said singer is using to create that sound... it's all nuts and bolts. There is no mystery... tension is bad, and the degree of how bad is based upon how much tension one uses. russ, what one derives from home study.... all of it.... books, cd's dvd's depends on the person. i can tell you personally i have learned so much from this stuff i cannot begin to tell you...but the key ingredient missing or very often de-emphasized or not stressed enough is that you have to apply yourself virtually every day to do the exercises. and some of the exercises are very challenging. i own a video store and run it singlehanded, so my only real option timewise is after i close. so i sit in my store after closing and i exercise...another thing the study home products don't do is tell you what your gains will feel like after you've devoted a year or so to the stuff. VideoHere
exercises are meaningless if they reinforce bad technique. A singer not aware of tension can never address it. I'm not aware of any 'home study' course that can... books don't have ears, neither do cds. I'm happy for your success, that's great news... but I believe with timely training your progress would go faster. That being said... without diligence and commitment, nothing is possible...... with an instructor, if the student fails to practice, they'll be wasting their money as well as the teacher's time. yes, it likely it would have gone faster, but ya gotta do what you can do. i'll agree you can't just go with one or even two programs or books etc., you've got to really study a lot to read about the variations in technique.....my motto....I just keep trying...lol!! ronws
And, apparently, after 23 years of concentrating on singing, I don't know anything becuase I haven't studied Seth Riggs or the holy of holies, CVT. I am doomed to suck, forever. On a serious note, some of the best review I have had comes from people with a familiarity with classical music and voice. My first wife, with a BA in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the Meadow School of the Arts at SMU in Dallas. And a few others with classical training or background. So, programs aside, it really helps to have someone with a trained ear listen to you and that is the value of some of these coaches that offer one or two free lessons in a package. In fact, I would say that that they auditory lessons will put you light-years ahead of most reading. Just watch out for the coach that thinks that Janis Joplin is the goal line. I love Janis, but she is not the penultimate of healthy singing.
akarawd
I just received the update and it's got Led Zep, Ac/Dc etc stuff sung and analyzed.
