ronws
That's happened to me once or twice. And I can do it but I'm a freak of nature. If you've got friends that expect you to sing without warm up and you need a warm up, then you friends need to have respect for what you do. Just like they need time to plug in their guitar, check levels, whatever. Also, if you can develop a warm-up that doesn't involve all the scales through 4 octaves and repeated for each vowel sound. To where you could say to your friends "give me 5 minutes." If they can't give you five minutes, then tell them "it ain't happenin.' " Stand up for yourself. aldertate
I know someone that would get requests to sing Una furtiva lagrima at the drop of a hat.... Lot of passagio work, with a nice Bb at the end. He'd comply.... he told me (paraphrasing here) that once breath is learned and the voice technique has been grooved. . that he could go weeks/months without practicing.... and since he has a ringing F#5, and has students singing at the met and all over Europe.. I guess he has a clue... lmao... Learn the nuts and bolts and then don't worry about it...
ronws
You said it better than I did, Russ. Vocal training is about building the right habits, not about endless practice. Practicing is good if it builds good habits. Plus, unless the song starts out with a stratospheric scream, chances are likely that you will warm up on the lower verses. So, how often are your friends expecting you sing out of the clear blue and that it must happen this very instant and not on the next song they do? Or was this just a hypothetical question to see what kind of responses you would get?

ronws
Singers on tour don't warm up as much as you might think. For one thing, they are singing every night, 2 to 3 hours at a whack. So, they have to save some energy for the show. Their warm-ups are light and not right before they go on stage. Geoff Tate warms up, very lightly, at different times of the day. That is something you can try. Warm up now and then, here and there, lightly. He starts out with head voice in the morning. Middle part of his range during the middle of the day, light chest voice about an hour before the show. So, it may seem like he gets up and just sings at the drop of a hat. But actually, he's been staying "limber" all day. It's just not an athletic endurance test to warm up and it shouldn't be such.

ronws
singers don't spit before 10am...Caruso.... lol I once got meet and hang out backstage with the band, Grass Roots. The singer wears a jock strap, rather than regular underwear. Don't know if that helps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhhGWG9JHig
