Hell yeah! FINALLY I'm able to sing this song! Still working on it, especially the passagio area and still haven't practiced the second verse and the screams at the end and still working on singing with a fuller and better tone and resonance too and so on but hey, finally I'm able to do it :)

That said, critique as much as you can. I had a skype lesson with Ken Tamplin two days ago (it was GREAT) and I'm really working on the connection, the passagio area and strengthening it and bringing the "chest" higher and stronger in my voice. It's still a bit shaky that passagio E4-A4 and you can hear it in that song too.

Here's the link: http://maihinnousu.net/s/12806

Please let me know if that link aint working

Sounds great! Good connection with your upper voice. I think the tone is consistent. The only little thing for me was the rhythm on some of the phrases was slightly rushed - just a couple parts, very minor. This will get better as it gets more in your voice. Nice job!

Hey, All I'd say about this is that it seems a bit too twangy for my tastes. The tone already sounds full, so backing off the twang a bit wouldn't hurt. Could be wrong. It's just my preference that singers be less... twangy. I imagine as you get used to this part of your voice you'll back off as a natural progression.

Good cover. However:

Too much nasal sound. Seth its not Twang there is nasal sound. Feel the difference.

Cheers.

I think that it was pretty good until you started the "there might of been a time...." part and on, became too nasily sounding, I think from the too much twang and the vowels you were using. I'm pretty sure you have an accent, and I think you could easily make it WAY better by working on pronunciation; I think you stay on the consonants too long sometimes also.

Thanks guys for accurate feedback, I'll work on all that. And right on with the accent too, Ken Tamplin wanted to work on that too in the future with me.

So besides everything else I'll work on my accent, consonant use and nasality.

To be honest I can't quite make a distinction between twang and nasality, especially in my own voice. I'm a natural twanger and same with nasality they both come from deep roots lol :) Sometimes I think I'm twanging and others say I'm just being nasal and sometimes other way round.

With consonants I know how to work with them Ken has good instructions but I haven't just done that yet.

With accent this might be the hardest part, how should I work on this? I want to make a good progress before next skype lesson where Ken is going to help me too with this. One thing is probably just listening to the original and imitating the sounds there? Second probably just learn to speak English well in the first place?

I see. I don't quite understand the difference.

Just look at the lyrics and try to read them slowly to get the words right, and when you sing want you almost just sing wnnt. Try to just do a pure head note, without really any effects at all and try to have the feeling above your nose a little, then try to add twang without adding nasality. You know what nasality sounds like, but twang just makes the sound brighter and more powerful.

True use of nasal resonance does not sound nasal. However, som nasal sound is not a bad thing and has it's uses and successes.

That being said, I think there is a difference between nasal resonance and twang, as a singer's tool. Twang is, my humble opinion, a pharyngeal configuration. I could be wrong.

Kalus's twang is great, and so is a quality I'll seek to achieve myself. Thanks for that post, Ronws. It reminded me that I've been meaning to listen to the Scorpions more.

I have no technical comment, only some stylistic ones. I agree with the nasal sound, I don't like it personnaly, but some singers made their career out of a very nasal sound. You have good control over your voice though, so there is no worry.

Why aren't days 32 hours long ? <_<

Devaitis has this exactly right.

I found it interesting that you sang this song w/ some excessive nasality, but in the clip on the other thread, http://maihinnousu.net/s/12825 , you had the port closed(listen to that "ringing" sound on your first example A(as in cat) B4.) Note that I am not "judging" the nasal sound, it's just that I listened to your other examples before listening to this song, and wasn't expecting this much nasality.

With that said, this is a review and critique section so... my personal taste would be to shoot for vowel sounds exactly like you're doing in those "Ken scales." Those are balls to the wall great sounds :D

analog it was after I recorded this that I did that on the other thread and I was practicing some beefier tone and resonance just for this song ;) I'm already able to sing a little fuller in scales and even songs and stuff. I have been a little too careful / fearful of my voice in the past and nasality has been a kind of "fake release valve". However I'm happy that I have that kind of control and stability that I have now already and now I'm working on a much fuller tone and resonance, like David Phelps kind of thing but rock! I'll record this again within a week or so :)

Thanks for good advice and comments everyone I'm taking it in. That said I DO like the nasality a bit as a stylistic thing every now and then.. :)

Cool Ken used a clip of our lesson and put it online. Check it out it's interesting stuff:

He spelled my name wrong it's Olli not Ollie, but I kinda like Ollie better lol. Been looking for a stage name anyway, maybe I shouldn't correct it!

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok guys after couple of weeks of practice I've tried to get more chest and fullness into the song. Integrating what I've learned in scales into real songs has been my focus and the challenge lately. Doesn't sound that good to me yet and control isn't that good yet but it's definitely thicker and fuller now at least.

So here's the chorus of the song that I just sang a moment ago: http://maihinnousu.net/s/13000

And for comparison this was couple of weeks ago: http://maihinnousu.net/s/13003

And here's a mix of both so you can really hear the difference: http://maihinnousu.net/s/13004

I sing almost at the extreme fullness that I'm able to right now, it's kinda like a workout, my voice gets stronger with practice. It sounds fuller now, but the one with nasal thin sound had a release, control and ease and also brightness that I like and want to have eventually. So best of both worlds is the goal I think..

What do you think? Any ideas and opinions will be appreciated!

Btw I mixed the volumes to be equal, in reality the fuller sound was obviously a bit louder too.

Lambert is one of the best, its very hard to sing songs like he does.

Thank you for sharing your clips.

Thank you guitartrek. I feel like every day I get just a little bit more compression and fuller sound.

Here's today: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35190966/laulureeni/13.7%20Whataya%20leikkaus.mp3

There are many annoying things there but I'm working on fullness first.. Maybe tomorrow I'll sing the whole chorus, today I just worked on small parts.

That recording is done in three separate takes. I just like to practice this way, recording small parts and trying to nail them better and better each time. Like using a song as a workout, but I record it too.
