Hey Jon. Astonishing. You not only sound like him, you look like him, just a little. Anyone ever tell you that? The difference is his chin actually recedes where as you still have some chin.

Anyway, before someone says, "well, he didn't hit this note exactly like Chris ..." First, STFU. You managed to get the intent of the song. The spirit. As well as some of the tonality. Be mindful that this section of the forum often ends up being where you go if you think you have a problem that needs fixing.

I think this performance was just fine, as it is. Then, again, I am a "lazy" a-hole. You should set up your profile page on the main website (all it takes is an email addy and a password) and showcase your stuff there.

I assume your login is your screen name, so that I would know which name to search for in the main site. If you are interested in my stuff, go to

http://www.themodernvocalist.com/profile/RonStone

That will give you an idea of how you can upload your stuff and present yourself.

In other words, I don't think you need any improvement on this and should just present it in your own showcased format.

Nice job Jonathan. You've got a good sense of style. Is there anything you want to work on for improvement? With your style you don't really need to do anything if you don't want to. But if you wanted to extend your range or something there are a range of options. For example, when you flip into falsetto on the A4 during the chorus, is that purely a stylistic choice, or is that a note you'd like to hit in full voice?

Scroll down the page and look for "my music." There, you will see titles listed. You can always just click play on the first one and then it will play in successsion.

Hey Guitartrek, thanks for taking the time and having a listen. extending my range is definitely something i'd love to get some tips on. the real problem for me is tension in the tongue do you have any suggestions for relaxing that as you go higher in your range?

jonathan - A lot of us are working on range extension here. It is tricky and takes a lot of practice - and the right kind of practicing. Tension in the tongue and the constrictors is what we all fight. As you progress up above E4 you need to do certain thiings to alleviate the tension. I see it as two main areas, which go hand in hand. 1) thinning out the folds as you go up - a lot of people "pull chest" up. Chest has thick folds. As you go up you need to thin the folds a little to allow the CT muscle to start "taking over". 2) modify vowels - the vocal tract needs to start changing to "tune" the formants for higher pitches. It is natural to sing the vowels how we "speak" them. However, we have to modify the vowels as we go higher. If you don't modify the vocal tract it can cause tension and pain and irritate the folds, which can lead to other problems. If you modify the vowels correctly, and thin out the folds, you can go up beyond the tenor range and cover the entire soprano range. But this takes time. And when I say modify the vowels correctly, I don't mean you have to sound like an opera singer. You can retain all the coolness of your style - it will just be easier and sound better.

This is a long process - I used the KTVA program which enabled me to add over an octave to my range in just a few weeks. (however, after a year and a half I'm still working hard smoothing everything out especially now in the soprano range) There are other great programs too, like Robert Lunte's program. You should check out VocalPower's videos - they are great and demonstrate some of these techniques.

Yeah, what Geno is talking about extending into soprano range. Nominally, tenor is approximately C3 to C5. Personally, at least in full volume, though it could change because I am working on a technique for low range, I go from E3 to Bb5. In classical description, especially since my voice is light and ringing, I might be described as a pop version of a tenore leggiero. With a few scratch marks into what used to be called castrati. Anything above E5 used to be considered beyond tenore leggiero. There are a few here that can squeak a C6. C6 is part of the soprano coloratura, which is the highest and brightest of the soprano ranges. However, one might scale back, considering the top note that can contain some articulation. I don't have much articulation at Bb5 but it is full volume. What I call a "stunt" note or something for accent or a grace note.

At least, that's how I and my two cents worth of advice view it.

Granted, classical fachs may not mean much in pop and rock music. Personally, I think Geoff Tate is a basso-baritone with some counter-tenor but many have considered him a tenor with a 4 octave range, which sounds like an oxymoron.

Your mileage may vary.

thanks guitartrek and ronws you both gave some awesome detailed advice there and after reading up i decided on buying the The Four Pillars of Singing programme. it seems to focus on exactly what i need for those notes above where my chest voice stops. hopefully i can start making some progress soon.
