How do you know if your vocal chords are damaged or just changing?

I could sing low to high up to today, where I found that al the high notes and even some of the medium ones were met with a sudden sensation of my throat being muffled, and all that was to escape me was either a whiny hiss or an uncontrollable yarble. I'm not sick, and I have never "sang so hard" to where my throat hurt - this just came on to me today. Is there any explanation for the sensation of like a cotton ball in the back of my throat and an inability to sing what I easily could before? It's only on the high notes, I can sing in a low register with no problem.
