Service To Post And Sell Singles

Hey guys, Since there is no real appropriate place for this topic, I've come here where most of you guys hang out. Can anyone recommend the best service for posting single cuts for sale that posts on all the best sites? I've been told to look at Zimbalam and don't know if they are the best or if there is a better service out there. appreciate any input you may have!

itunes. I tried to download an album from amazon and it didn't work out for me. But itunes worked just fine. And with itunes, it syncs to your ipod.

I'm not sure what the current rate is there but generally speaking, the market norm has been 50 percent recording artist, 50 percent distributor, which is way better than the 12 percent you get from a record company.

That is, you can release your own copyrighted material and sell to the public without a record deal. The thing they have that you don't is the inroads of advertising and tour production. And you can do that, your self.

A country singer friend of ours produces his own shows and tours. Of course, he has taken a bath a few times (lost money a few times because a show fell through, usually through tour support problems.)

Hey Ronws, thanks for the info. I'm trying to help a friend out that told me that there are sites out there that will post for itunes as well as other sites for you. Are you familiar with any of thoes companies?

There's a couple of other websites I have read about that will also place your songs on websites in conjunction with advertising. Other sites will list your songs and it will be grouped with similar music. Then, your song has as big a chance of being heard as a big name because it is part of a genre someone was searching.

As any deal goes, the more people in the distribution chain, the less money you get.

Also, I had a thread in artist developement, since release and distribution is part of an artist's developement of their own "brand."

Some old school people, like our friend, Ray Wylie Hubbard, still do it the "hard way." He finances his own recording and cd pressing. And takes it on the road. He and his band are also their own roadies. His wife sets up a table to sell merch. And plays festivals, coffee houses. I've seen him perform in a Barnes & Noble Bookstore (an unplugged version.)

He's probably made as much money in songwriter royalties as anyone else. For the few people who don't know, he wrote "Redneck Mothers," which was a gigantic hit for Jerry Jeff Walker.

Hey Bro, I am doing it the hard way as well. No financial help from anyone. All done myself. All music and vocals recorded in my own personal studio, on equipment that I own for songs that I wrote for an album I produced and mixed and mastered all myself. All knowledge obtained, not through school or a certificate program, but by trial and error, honestly, more error than trial. I have learned many things in the process of which I won't go into. That would be a very long post/thread in and of itself.

I pay for my own domain name, I pay for my webspace where my site is hosted. I put content on and maintain my site myself. I own my own publishing company to protect my works, it is registered with the IRS, has been for years. All of my content is either created by me, or my services are offered and created in my studio. Currently, I have about 4 collaboration songs/videos in production with other musicians, as well as working on video content for at least 2 of my songs.

I only have 2 songs left to mix.

I have set a release date for March for release of my CD, 4 days after yout B-Day bro, lol.

I have set up an account with cdbaby.com

For your money, you receive distribution to 1,000's of brick and mortar stores, digital distribution through itunes, rhapsody, amazon, and a dozen other outlets. They also allow for synch licensing, some you mentioned earlier, for film, tv, video games, etc. also, you sell your physical cd's and mp3 downloads directly from their site, or set up a widget through them to wherever you want to post it.

I have certain limitations, but I work around them. For instance, I have a standard quality video cam, not an HD, I don't have protools or equipment that accesses protools. I don't have a DAT machine, but I don't need one as I have a firewire unit that helps me record direct to digital, although I do have the old porta 03 4 track, as well as a Tascam 8 track multitrack recorder(uses Type II High Bias Chromium tapes).

I am going to film some video footage of my studio and post it for everyone to see. Last year, a co-worker came over and helped me frame my sound booth. I put a piece of plexi glass in to see out. Drywalled it, mudded and taped it myself, and painted it.

So basically everything I use, have or otherwise is available for production of content, I have either worked hard to make, get or build myself.

I rely on nobody else to help. Plus we are a one income family(me). I have a wife and a daughter to take care of. So If I can do all this myself, anyone can.

If you need some advice or pointers to help, shoot me an email. I have a vast knowledge in all of this in addition to recording and mixing tips.

And if you ask, I only spent $100 to build my sound booth. The room was renovated last year. So all told I spent about $700 to renovate the room and build a booth. And alot of labor on me and my family's part.

You also have outlets like Reverb Nation, Myspace, Soundclick, Purevolume, even youtube. Don't have a camera? use a still photo with your music laid over it.

The second quoted passage reminds me of the how the Cars recorded their debut album. They didn't have money or backers to finance the recording. But they could work with their hands. They helped build the studio in which that album was recorded.

What Scott's method allows him is greater creative control and greater financial control. Not having relied on a record company, which would essentially own significant chunks of his work forever, he gets more of the money from sales. This is what Prince learned the hard way. The reason Prince changed his name to the symbol was to avoid contractual conflicts. He was required to record a certain number of albums as "Prince." If he was no longer "Prince," he had no contractual obligation. Once that initial contract expired, he legally changed his name back to Prince.

I agree they are probably the best. I was just trying to find a company that places your tracks w/ them as well as itunes, reverbnation, etc. maybe even a deal for Facebook . Kind of sounds lazy because one could do it themselves but i work with a lot of really good musicians and songwriters that really don't know how to market themselves correctly. I found plenty of resources in kindle version of books on how to start your own record label, stuff like that. Also, in the artist developement section of this forum is an old thread of all the contact information at major broadcasters and some production companies. People that are in charge of procuring new music for movies, tv shows, commercial ads, etc.

Sorry man, I missed this post. I really admire what you do. There's a Grammy winner named John Oszajca that has a great membership out there of how to market your music which is very imformative but a lot of hype too like "how to get 40,000 opt-ins to your pages in one week" really good stuff if you're willing to do some work, but he has a lot of affiliates and you will spend some money. The thing he dosen't cover is the actual processes of recording and how to save money doing that, as you just briefly covered. I would like to talk to you about that soon if you don't mind. So did I understand you correctly that CD Baby actually has a program for distribution to all thoes outlets? I'd appreciate if you get back to me on that! Thanks for the great info!!!

HeySLStone, BTW I just realized after you mentioned CD Baby, I remembered something about that grammy winner I mentioned before, when he actually first started marketing his site last year. He actually launched his site by talking about how he helped an artist to become the biggest selling artist for one day sales in CD Baby's history. Thought that was interesting.
