Yell and Grit

I've been doing vocal exercises and studying for about 2 months now. I've seen great improvement in my singing in general. I want to learn more technique to obtain a certain kind of grit. I was wondering if you guys could guide me in the right direction. I understand that I won't be achieving these goals overnight and I'm willing to work hard to get my voice to sound the way I want it to. I just really need some light shined. Here are some examples of what I like.

Go to 2:22. It starts at the beginning of the phrase "String it along say you'll love me either way"

The example I gave is just one of the many occurrences of this particular technique. Feel free to scan the video for more examples.

This is a more extreme version. Go to 3:07. He applies it on the word "Way" in the lyrics "This Way".

Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

I may have understood the question-- improved singing with grit or rasp. If so, let me begin with singing is in the ear of the beholder.

Singer does have sufficient grit, relative to the remainder of the song, to get at the desired emotion communicated. No need for more grit.

However, I think his interpretation is weak, thought it is a good song. The singer has some bass and a mid range; yet, continually sings on a very high sound. This makes the song monotonous. High, high, high, and more highs. My opinion is less highs, more attention to audience singing, and more balanced in overall pitch range.
