Pianoasis
I always have issues with this. Sometimes I can hit falsetto no problem, other times I sound like a complete idiot with no musical talent whatsoever. I practice and I try to master the skill so I can let it out more often, but the things I try don't work. It's a real bitch because sometimes I'm trying to tell a joke and it requires me to make a funny falsetto voice and I just go "SQUAUKAJHDAVFhhhhhh" People are like "wtf", my friends don't talk to me anymore, it's just a bad experience for everyone. So now I am asking, Does anyone has some useful tips and tricks to mastering falsetto?

ronws
Maybe you have the wrong audience or friends, especially if friends are going to leave you because you do an odd sounding falsetto for comedic effect. Comedian Ron White does a crappy falsetto now and then and people pay him good money to hear it, too.

But I do get upset at the fact that I can't make a funny because I'll look like a moron.

I really just wonder if there are some techniques you can do to work on falsetto, in general. By the way, what IS head voice? And how do you use it? And how do you use it? Brother, I understand *exactly* what you mean about trying to use a falsetto and at times not being able to pull it off and sounding like an idiot (and especially if you want to use it in a joke). I'm still trying to improve it myself in fact, and even now sometimes I just cant do it well, but the key to success is your determination. In answering your question: head voice is simply a trained falsetto. You probably cant tell the difference between the two yet, but a falsetto is weaker, breathy/airy (you hear air coming out when you sing it), and largely unusable. With proper technique, you "transform" your falsetto into a head voice. Head voice is "full" sounding, doesnt sound breathy and is more consistent. The ultimate goal is to develop a head voice that is so strong and full that you can even make it sound like your chest voice (your "normal" voice)
ronws
From the several sources I have learned, falsetto is not head voice. It is a tonal quality or lack thereof that can happen often in the "head voice" end of the range. Specifically, falsetto does not have the resonant quality of full voice. It is airy. That being said, I think it is possible to have a note that, at one end of the breath pressure spectrum, sounds falsetto, and then, as more concentrated air pressure is applied, it activates more of the folds. The TA muscles cause the closeness of folds, the CT muscles control the length and therefore tension. One might say that CT would be falsetto, if it were not for engaging some TA closure to provide a slightly higher closed quotient of the glottis to provide a light, connected head voice. In my humble opinion.
VideoHere
ron, you can still have a nice clean head voice without engaging ct....isn't that what frisell has us starting out with?
Snejk
I can only speak from my experience but in my throat falsetto and head voice are the exact same co-ordinations, the only difference is cord closure It's like chest vs breathy chest... You don't go around calling it falchesto right? :P

You don't go around calling it falchesto right? Absolutely brilliant, Snejk. Falchesto, indeed. Well done. I think you deserve a point. Bob, I thought the point of Frisell's training was to make CT in control and only allow in TA as necessary to provide the ring and volume normally associated with chest voice. But that is what I get from reading his words, whereas you have actually had lessons with him. What does he say, outside of the book? (without giving too much away, of course.) VideoHere
yes, but that ta (chest musculature) involvement had to occur in the final finished product. he would say that the head voice building stage is just preliminary. i'm to the point now where i can feel the gap between the two registers closing up....but closing up because the head voice has gained a strength i never knew could develop. when i go singing now, i "feel" different singing than i used to. "the mixed voice is what we were after" he said.."and purity of tone." he stated that well accomplished mixed voice prowess took 5-10 years." i wish i had the money to get down to him again. ronws
I don't doubt that mix is and was the goal. 5 to 10 years. I hope I am finished before I'm 5 feet under, pushing up daisies.
