Trip
Bit of a useless topic but, anyway, I'm at episode 13 of the new season and I can't but be astonished at the amount of talented singers there. It's almost discouraging (in general) and kind of comforting (in that I'm not in the US and I wouldn't have to compete in this environment probably). There are 16-to-21-year olds in season 11 that sound like they've had at least 10 years of purposeful, single-minded tutoring: any one of them could win any singing competition in my country and in most other countries as well (and of those competitions I've watched my fair share), if it were up to the singing voice. It's somewhat staggering to see how seriously singing is taken in the US, on the technical level. Even the ones that don't have huge range and/or mindblowing control show the sort of musicianship that would easily make them not only sellable but also appreciated artists. This country should really manage its musical potential better than it's doing now, 'cause that potential is just insane.
Guest
I think that young girl (last name Sanchez) is amazing. It's funny but most people seem to think Idol sucks and that the singers are bad. I often hear comparisons to "The Voice" and comments like "that is where he real singers are." I on the other hand find The Voice very average or less. Often the singers are pitchy or uncontrolled. yet the judges are drooling over them. Personally, I find American Idol to be the better of the singing shows. Consumingfire39
*Spoilers below I do not feel the quality has been very good at all this year. I have not watched most Idol seasons but I did watch last year and I do not think this year is even close. No guys are even close to say a James Durbin this year in ability. Holley Cavanaugh, Sanchez, and Dixon are all talened. People like Hejun and Deandre have no business still being in a the competition.
Trip
Durbin had insane range, but audibly uncontrolled at times. I guess he gets extra points (from me also) for being one of the very few all-out rockers ever on this show, but what he does in terms of vocal technique, many people did this year as well, only in other styles of music, not your favorite ones, I'd bet Tommy, I would agree, yeah. But AI is after all the biggest of these shows and it attracts the most people. I shudder to think how many more there are in the States waiting for their chance. Guest
For me, Joshua is very good, but then again I like that style. Gospel, blues, soul... But, in my opinion, he isn't consistent. The song above was great, I liked it, I watched that show. His next performance didn't do it for me. Tommy
Sun
Strongly disagree. All his performances have been superb except for maybe the last one, which was still very very good. IMO he is the most consistent singer in the competition but he said himself he didn't connect with that song. It may be very difficult to find a song you connect with when they restrict your available songs to one artist. This week they choose a song from their own favourite so it will probably be extremley good performances from everyone...
Guest
Well I can agree with the unfamiliar song thing. I was thinking about that when watching the Billy Joel show. However, I had to second guess myself when Sanchez sung here song because she too said it was an unfamiliar song for her; but she sang it like she owned it!! I think that is what separates good and great. It's early yet, time will tell.
Sun
Yeah but last week Sanchez was not so great. Obviously both Joshua and Jessica are extremley skilled and who you like the best is just up to you. Personally I can't stand Jessicas "earthquake" vibrato Also Jessica gets way too much credit (not that she isn't fantastic), f.ex. when she sang the whitney houston song. Comments like "the hardest song in the world to sing" makes me want to bitch slap the jury with some metal!
Guest
I also like the Rock kid with the skunk stripe hair. Colton Dixon?
Trip
Yeah, very pretty, clear and resonant head-voice, that Colton. Bit cheesy though. Helluva sister he's got.
Consumingfire39
I'm sorry what? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ4pNlvt0m8 That was terrific but that was exactly who he is. To me, it does not appear as if he is very diverse at all. It is obviously not important to be diverse or adaptible once you have a contract and are putting out music but this competition is not based on that. Trip
I've always thought that it is though, that it is about the personal signature under every performance, no matter the style.
jonpall
Anyone else than me really hoping that Phil Phillips will NOT win this year? Just like last year, I fear that the worst singer in the top 10 will win. Sorry, but Phil doesn't appeal to me. I don't even think he's original and he's certainly not a technical singer. And there are others with more feel than him. I've come to think that he's going to win almost ENTIRELY because the young female voters think he's the cutest of the bunch. They may have voted for Colton but he probably ruined it for the girls by saying that he'll always choose Jesus over them. But here's a prayer from me - please don't let Phil win that show. He seems to be a great guy and all, but in the largest SINGING contest in America, he should NOT win. Otherwise they REALLY have to check the voting system because then it's more obvious than ever that it's all about the dollar and being cute and young. Oh say can you f#$%ng sing! Have a happy, happy day, all! ;)
Guest
I'm not a fan of Phil either. A Dave Mathews clone.
Quincy
I never understood why the 3 judges are so infatuated by his UNIQUE and REAL sound. Just doesn't do it for me. Glad I'm not the only one that feels he is being over rated. I do think the field is as deep and strong as it has ever been... kinda like Elise... that soulful bluesy sultry voice. I thought she killed that Zep song. For some reason she ends up in the bottom 3. I think it is getting harder and harder for women to win this thing. I'll be surprised if she lasts another week or two, but that is my favorite so far.
Guest
I don't think Elise picks the right songs for her voice. I'd like to hear her do Malisa Ethridge. The fans don't seem to like Holly either for some reason. She's always in the bottom. Josh really does some good things with his voice imo. Real good. Spectrum
I vowed never to watch this show again after Siobhan Magnus was kicked off... but when I heard a rock chick sang Whole Lotta Love and nailed it, I had to take a gander. Elise is amazing. She's up there with the best of Idol for me, which is a very short list of Siobhan, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Lambert. No surprise she keeps ending up in the bottom 3 though, I think she's the first Idolist to shamelessly rock out without watering it down at all. There is no pop appeal to keep the kiddies voting for her.

VideoHere
she's got a new cd out. another great to me was that guy anthony federov but he doesn't seem to be doing anything substantial. he did one hell of a national anthem.
Validar
I liked Siobhan Magnus, too. Her tone reminded me of Linda Ronstadt, strangely. She was voted off way too soon that season. Has anyone heard ANYTHING about the guy who won that season? Lee something??? I watched one episode this season, and there just wasn't anything to keep me watching. It's the first season I haven't watched, actually.

Quincy
Lee Dewyze. I liked that guy, he was good too. I don't know what he's doing now. I loved this guys rendition of "Simple Man". I think that was his all time favorite song... or at least ranks way up there. You could tell he loved it.
