Is it common to NOT have a clear tone in headvoice?

Hi guys, my first post here.

Iv started to sing 2 years ago, and i thought always that i cant do it.

I started to play around with spotify and sing karaoke and then move on to buy the programs and videos from

Brett Manning. In dec i bought the 4 pillars but i havent had any lessons yet since i was ill for 2 months.

Im a low bass (i guess) and i can sing in C2 and sometimes lower so expanding range has been on my wishlist.

C4 was what i could reach at the beginning ( if i remember correct) today its G4 but only with Wee-s and AA-s

I have a brake at G-A3 that i cant handle, in any other way than Robs sirens.

According to Brett you cant have highnotes if you dont have a clear headvoice, if i understand him right , so i started to play with finding the resonans for the headvoice, with different nasal sounds, ang, hooty and nasal.

But i cant make a clear tone in pure head, i guess that i have always been singing in chest AND head at the same time?

So thats why i ask is it common NOT to have a clear headvoice?

I dont have a clue how to make a clear tone in headvoice, and sometimes i think that doing exercises for the headvoice not knowing how to do them wont help.

It seems as impossible as to learn a Chinese to say RRRR, i was told if you havent heard R when you where little you cant produce it when your older?

Im not looking for shortcuts and i will have lessons, i just want to clearify some things, so they dont become stumbling blocs in my head. Thanks.

Actually, most high notes are in head voice so to state that you must have a clear head voice to have clear high notes is like saying that, to have sunshine, the sun must be out, tempting one to reply, "really?"

What makes you think your head tones are not clear? I find many to have a stumbling block with how they think or want to sound like.

I don't have an answer (sorry) but I'm sure someone might. But out of curiosity and the sake of knowledge, I'd be interested in hearing a sound sample. It might make it easier for someone to help also.

Well thats easy, my pure headtones are not clear, but if i blend them with chest they are.

And my question was " is it common not to have a clear headvoice"

I'm guessing by 'not clear' you mean your high notes sound distorted? If that's the case you are probably pushing too hard or forcing something to reach your high notes. It doesn't sound like it is causing you pain from what you wrote but it could lead to problems, it did with me. I would really try to book a lesson with a vocal coach to work on that. You should be able to get clear notes before doing the distorted type.

It sounds like falsetto without the air. Not disorted or raspy.

I start really soft and quietly (subdued in english?) in pure head and then louder but the tone never get clear.

Kari: For a low bass, what you just described is the way head voice very often shows up first, a 'non-airy falsetto'. When I was in my early 20s, that is the kind of bass voice I had going, too. Now, I have a higher one :-)

A clear headvoice, for any singer, is a matter of coordination.

For this to develop further, there are two aspects to work on: 1) coordination of breath with laryngeal musculature during phonation, and 2) vowel/pitch combinations.

You have a break at G4-A4? I am not surprised. The transition to head voice, if done with power by a bass, will be closer to Middle C. If you are currently taking a bunch of vocal weight higher than that, you are reducing the liklihood that you will be able to get the lighter-mass phonation you are looking for.

Lessons will help. A couple with Rob Lunte, and then practicing using the 4 pillars, will help you build the coordination you need.

Thanks for that answer, its a relief, so its not just me.

And im not only kidding, i cant scream, and hardly even shout (before voicepractise) without my voice totally falling apart, iv espected that to give me some problems in the upper ranges. It gives me encuoragement to hear that you had the same "problem" and sorted it out.

And yes i will have lessons for Robert, iv hit the "wall" and its time to go past it!
