i went to dr. woo this morning and after six months and a ton of work, i am 100% $%^& polyp free!!!!!!!

i have not been this relieved and this happy in a long time.

thank god i beat the odds, (nearly everyone, everything i read pointed to surgery)...

i still have to figure out the phlegm issue, but at least i know it's not being caused by the phlegm.

folks, please remember to watch out how you use your voice speaking, just as much, if not more so as singing.

thanks so much folks!!!

i did everything possible! three doctor opinions, hours on the web, identifying and reaching out to those that could help.... spent hundreds on voice therapy, 4 books........

refused the surgery...and prayed a lot.

then i'd steam and massage the throat while i visualized it going away, day after day.

the best thing i can advise is to adopt a mindset of being aware (very consciously aware) of the importance of not getting too throaty or too gtottal with your speaking voice, and try never to punch into or push excessive air pressure into or against the vocal folds.

anytime you have the chance, just for the hell of it too, for no reason at all, hum, do a few lip bubbles, hum through a straw any of this has a massage-like soothing effect on the vocal folds.

I am very happy for you.

Might I ask you, how did you get to where you stopped speaking and singing so much from your throat? What type of exercises did you do to avoid doing this?

thanks again folks..i really apprecaite it.

to answer your question a lot of this is a mental reprogramming. first, the speech therapist almost instantly picked up on my glottal attack habit, and my punchy way of initiating my first words (my onsets).

next you have to learn to speak less with these bad habits so this involves constantly monitoring yourself.

you have to avoid the throat and you do this by going to speak from the similar position of where you go to perform an "ng."

the idea is to think out of the throat at all times.

the exercises that help keep me out of the throat are these:

lip bubbles...i feel like i have talked too much.....a couple of minutes of lip bubbles.

"ng" sirens, nice and light

light heady "mums"

humming into the mask, a great one

and the best of all is the straw exercises....i bought a box of straws, one for the store, one in the car.

the throat is simply off limits, as is shouting, talking loudy, or talking with no tonal variation.

coffee, decaf, all of it done!!!

unfortunately it's

classichellobello25

not my finest of moments! :P I'm currently doing my dissertation on this very topic(!), encompassing vocal health, diagnosis and recovery and comparing surgical and non-surgical options. I have to draft up the interview questions, so it may not be for a week or two, but it would be great if we could arrange a time that suits us both so i can get things ready :D
