wtewalt
I'd really like to be able to incorporate some vocal distortion (I think this is the term) or grittiness into my singing at select moments. Does anyone have any tips/ tricks/ exercises? Right now, I have a bit of a buzzy type of singing that I can use and it sounds pretty good with soul type songs but I am interested in more of an isolated, more powerful instance of using it too. Here is a video sample of what I'm talking about. Skip to 1:13 to hear it: Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
jonpall
"Think" agressive or angry or evil or pissed off or whatever works for you, while trying to keep your throat as relaxed as you can at the same time. That would be a good starting point. Also, try to exhale as little air as possible, but again, without tensing up in your throat while doing it. But usually, what helps a good rasp is a technically solid non-raspy tone underneath it.
wtewalt
I'll give that a try today and see if I can get any progress on it. Are there any recommended vowels or words that are easier to start on? Also, is this something that requires singing at full volume to pull off? I agree with having a strong foundation. I've worked a lot lately on improving my tone and I think it's definitely improved, even in just the past week. Now that the tone is coming together, I wanted to see about learning some techniques. Thanks!
jonpall
I would just start off with vowels that you personally find comfortable. I recommend about medium volume.
srs7593
When I twang hard, relax, drop my jaw just a little too low, and use lots of support, I can get a very thick and grungy scream through and above my break. But it does start to wear me down.

wtewalt
No no, that's not my band. I only posted that as an example of a technique I was hoping to get some advice on.
