How much range should I be striving for?

There's another thread about dropped guitar tuning & singing on top of that, basically having to transpose the song.

That got me thinking about some bands that play a half step down to make it easier for the singer. This just didn't make sense to me.

a half step. Wouldn't you think the singer should be able to work out a half step?

wooo, no!!!

a half step up can be significant, especially in full voice.

a half step can be a make or break note for a singer, or make the level of difficulty rise just enough to hamper consistency.

in some songs, depending on the singer, there's a big differnce betwwen b flat and a b natural.

i know in my own case, a full voice c5 is a bit easier to handle than a dflat.

and in most cases, the audience will hardly notice or care about the difference.

Dropping 1/2 a step has a couple of reasons. Primarily, the acoustics in most live venues is murder on higher notes, especially vocal notes. Second, what you hear on the album is heavily engineered and the "high" notes are often comp'd from a number of takes. That's why I prefer the live version, because that's where it's at. In fact, I think the live version is the real version and the album version is 1/2 step higher for whatever purposes of the producer.

But I could be wrong.

Also, some singers may have a problem squeezing that 1/2 step, especially on tour.

Though you could go on tour and report back how it was. You could easily know something that could be of value.

I have transposed a song 1 whole step. Higher. The original was too low for me. So I put in a key that was more comfortable for me. Maybe I'm lazy.

:D

BC - There's nothing wrong with dropping a half step or more for a performance based on how well you are doing at the moment. However, I personally strive for the original key always. Meaning, that is my goal, and I work hard to acheive it. But it comes down to timing and how much time you have to "gear up" for a particular performance. Don't forget you have the ability to expand your range to a great degree - which should cover any song that comes along. But it takes a long time and a lot of work and dedication.
