Matt
Welcome to the forum. Probably 70% of the discussions here are about techniques related to your examples. You'll have to be more precise!
Marcus
I can only recommend what I've read or tested for myself, and I'm into more clean vocals than in your examples. James Lugo's "Vocal Asylum" is really good for singing rock and metal and helped me increase my full voice register with almost an octave. And "Complete Vocal Technique" is really comprehensive and covers everything from classical to growl vocals, along with correct techniques for support and breathing. And as Matt said, there's a lot on the forum already. That's a start, at least.
jkielq91
cheers guys i mean the sort of shouty singing they do, and raspy stuff. ill check out wha marcus recomended
joshual
i sung like that when i was 20 lol ( i'm 31 now). As i did it naturaly i can't really tell you how to do this, but just one advice. Listen close to the singers and you will realize that the volume of their voice is not really loud, that's for me the most important thing if you don't want to blow your voice. Never try to shout that kind of singing. it's good to hear Davidian again, love it

markgrubb@gmail.com
im very short of cash atm I completely understand. This is not the only way; however, it is a very solid pedagogy. Pillars shines in metal; however, it is solid instruction that teaches healthy and effective vocalizes. My voice is completely different. I made huge leaps in less than 90 days (that is real). I paid $199 for a hard copy of Pillars. You are getting Pillars AND a lesson for $49, that is truely a deal. Believe me, I know about not having the cash, and I will help you as I can for FREE 99. As will many great voices and teachers on this forum. I just wanted to make sure you knew about the deal, especially since it is really applicable to what you are interested in. markgrubb@gmail.com
Oh man, I didn't listen to your links earlier. Susan Carr has a dvd called 'The Art of Screaming' http://theartofscreaming.com/ that would be useful to you. It is $24.99. The DVD is great. Robert's stuff is a HUGE value. I don't sing in the style you are interested in. I love hard rock and metal. I can sing most anything in a healthy way with nice tones. The style you like is not something I have ever worked in. Not sure how much I can help you with it; however, healthy singing is healthy singing no matter what style. Pillars does teach distortion and extreme screams (both Extreme Scream Pitch and Extreme Scream Distortion).
keoladonaghy
Aloha Mark, and many thanks for posting that special! I hadn't seen it previously and assumed that the $49 was a typo. What a deal! I just bought it and am awaiting the download link. And a big mahalo to Robert for offering that special. Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas) everyone, Keola I study at The Vocalist Studio with Robert Lunte. Administrator Robert Lunte Posted December 24, 2009 Administrator Share Posted December 24, 2009 Hi guys... thanks for the support Mark and Yes, Keola... I just emailed you your copy... I have to say, for $49 to get the complete system of "Pillars" AND an internet lesson... you would think Ive gone bonkers! I have,,, believe me, the deal ends on the 30th. As for the gentleman who posted on extreme scream distortion... I can show you how to make these sounds, but first you have to develop a foundation of clean vocal configurations. You do not jump into learning vocal effects, which is what this is, without building a true singing voice first. There are no short-cuts... also you have to be committed to do some serious training like Mark and Josh do... this is takes real work and real commitment. Good luck to you... VideoHere
just one word of caution...don't utilize the throat to produce these sounds. Work on your breathing and breath support and get a good vocal foundation built. Check out Melissa Cross' DVD. She's good for this type of thing. Zero
I agree with Robert, you shouldn't try any effects without having complete controls of the foundations. I highly recommend The 4 Pillars program for all hard rockers out there, and after that take some lessons with the man himself, you will NOT regret it. Martin H
Pillars does teach distortion and extreme screams (both Extreme Scream Pitch and Extreme Scream Distortion). I just recently bought Robert's Pillars, but I was a bit disappointed when it turned out that these techniques mentioned were in fact NOT included in the program! -- Even though it actually says otherwise in the adverticement/product details on The Vocalist Studio's website! :(
markgrubb@gmail.com
I just recently bought Robert's Pillars, but I was a bit disappointed when it turned out that these techniques mentioned were in fact NOT included in the program! -- Even though it actually says otherwise in the adverticement/product details on The Vocalist Studio's website! I have an early edition of The Four Pillars of Screaming. The system has gone through a few releases and is now the Four Pillars of Singing. I will have to look through the materials and see what I can find on Grott. I posted that as I am sure there is material there and I know Robert teaches Grott when desired, once the student has a strong foundation (Grott is an advanced technique, you place the dist on top of clean tone / above). Here is a video of Randy Loran Bridging and Connecting using Grott: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS8uncjzz4E
analog
Mark, I believe Martin is just calling out the fact that it's not "covered" in the hard copy of the program. Where CVT, for example, explains in detail how to achieve various effects(in the book/sound library.)
jkielq91
im 18 and a student with no reguler income, £45 is a lot of money for me atm iv been singing for a few years and my clean singings pretty good already so any more advice? markgrubb@gmail.com
so any more advice? Record yourself vocalizing a scale throughout your current range and post a link to it on this thread. The resulting production will tell what you have already mastered and what you should focus on next. I work mostly with vocalizes / scales during training. Some teachers use repertoire (songs) almost exclusively. (note: I am a student of voice and do not teach voice at this time). Different vocalizes are suggested to address different growing points. I am not sure how repertoire is selected to address specific vocal issues. That said, specific exercises can be prescribed once your voice has been auditioned. Radioclouds
Listening to those links, seeing as you want to growl and not scream, the trick is lowering your chin, and lowering your vocal register to growl out this tones without sacrificing throat comfort. it will take practice in the rehearsal studio to get good and comfortable with this. In Analogdriver www.myspace.com/analogdriver i do singing and go back and forth between the screaming. that takes some practice but i have found ways to not hurt my voice. If you're doing this sort of thing live or in rehearsal.....room temperature gatorade will really help you. any flavor! Also, singing closer to the mic is good for this growl. A Shure Beta 58 performs well for this. Ricky!
Rexinator
Hello. This is my first contact with TMV. It looks like a great forum. I purchased the Four Pillars (through PayPal), but I'm a little confused about how this will be delivered. I'm assuming that I'll receive a DVD by mail, but how does the internet lesson work? After completing the PayPal transaction, i was routed back to Robert's home page. I'm kind of stupid about these things, so please forgive my ignorance. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks! keoladonaghy
Rexinator, if you got the $49 Christmas special like I did, Robert will email you a link and password where you can download the files. The special is for the download version of Pillars. I hope you have a decent Internet connection as the files are substantial (about 2 gigabytes). Included in Robert's email are instructions for getting and using Skype so you can connect and get your Internet lesson. I had mine with him today and it was great. There are a lot of things I thought I had down going into the lesson and after some diagnostics Robert helped me identify problem areas and things to work on. It was a great hour. I'm sure yours will be too, so just hang in there until you get the instructions from Robert.
