You have a nice voice. Like the vibrato at the top of your belts. Good pitch.

You should be singing, nice work.

Training would help you to open up your belts and stop constriction at the top of your chest voice. Would enjoy being your voice coach.

Hope this helps..

Thanks a lot for the kind words, Robert and doomhead. Robert, I'm totally broke (or close to it) these days so I can't afford anything but I do own several vocal instructionals and I plan to use them so that I can maybe pull off some tenor songs with my band (at home it's easier) after 3 months or so. Maybe that's being too optimistic, I don't know.

If I could ever sing songs like Sweet child o' mine, You shook me all night long, Pride (in the name of love), I remember you (by Skid Row), etc., and do them justice, I would die a happy man. That would be enough for me, even though I'm going to try to constantly take things to the next level.

Great job man! Excellent "live" recordings.

If I could ever sing songs like Sweet child o' mine, You shook me all night long,.... I remember you (by Skid Row), etc.,

Those songs are gonna require you to let go of that "heavyness" in your voice.

W/out going into CVT speak...I would just say you need to find that light twanged compressed spot in your upper range. BTW...Your quest is MY quest as I've added a lot of the old 80's rock stuff to my repertoire.

I would suggest working w/ light twang everyday...trying to make it as effortless as possible. I do a lot of baby crying, duck quacking, general twang stuff...making it as effortless as possible. Really cry through the twang. There is a nice seemingly effortless spot you can find(I twanged for the longest time with too much weight and additional constriction.) Once you find that twang( something like this: http://www.box.net/shared/9uo29x5zf7 ) start adding lyrics to it. When you get comfortable with that...you can modify the sound a bit. This really helps when I go to do GNR stuff.

NOTE: I am by no means a voice teacher or an expert(on anything really :) )

I recorded a clip for you describing what I'm talking about here. I really feel like it's been helpful(at least to me) to have feedback on these forums from people who are actually struggling with issues and have OVERCOME them(with help from instructors, own experimentation, what have you.) So with that in mind:

Obviously I'm not Bono and I'm using a hand held voice recorder...but you get the idea. The trick here is the light twang(w/ cry.) It has to stay effortless. Seriously has helped me singing in ALL MODES(CVT) and everything in-between(gray areas.) There are certainly other factors involved...but thanks to a great instructor...I am now twanging in an insanely efficient way.

On a side note: I also think that if you can find this spot(light twang) you will find distortion in curbing will be much easier and being able to sing between Curbing and OD will be much easier. As Robert said in your other post-

if you getting tired with hyper contractions of twang then I dont think you are getting enough isolation, your pulling in extrinsic constrictor activations... you need to work on getting cleaner twang contractions and not pull in any constrictor engagements.

I know for a fact that you will be singing whatever the hell want in the near future and...no matter what...Don't forget that you ALREADY have an awesome voice! Tell yourself that about a hundred times a day brother. Cheers.

Thanks for a really inspirational post, analog. If you wanna chat further, here I am on MSN Messenger: j_g_thorarinsson@hotmail.com. I've come to realize the importance of twang lately and I'm working on it. Just out of curiousity, what are you doing to change the sound from duck-y sounding to Bono at the end of your second clip?

hey jonpall, i'm over here now...a reassuring note "pride" was mostly sung in a lower key whenever i've seen him.

I love your mention of twang in the upper register (above the passagio). That's a great analogy... it keep pps from trying to muscle and force the sound, and lets it bloom...

I like it! If you don't mind I'll tell my teacher the 'twang' idea... Seems the biggest key to teaching voice is communication. The twang idea resonated immediately with me...

thanks!

Jonpall, I really liked the tone of your voice. You should definitely keep doing this. I liked the slight rasp/distortion in the Billy Idol song as well!

Analog, the twang you are talking about - is this the same as using a pharyngal resonance? To me (i am NO expert, just a beginner) it sounds like the same effect as using the Nay Nay Nay exercise...am I correct? Also one more thing, and definitely NO offense meant, in the Pride clip, when you sing the song, to my ears it sounds a bit like Yelling (i might be totally wrong here) ... can you please explain a bit more if you have time? I am wondering if one could sing a 1 hour set if one sings like that...worried that you may lose a lot of energy very easily. (again, i might be totally wrong)

thanks for the knowledge!

Yes I believe so...just different terms.

No offense at all :) I've never sung that song before was just trying to capture the intensity that Bono uses. What I'm doing there is in a "gray" area...but you could make it MORE yell like and actually be in the center of what CVT calls Overdrive. 100% healthy and possible up to Male High C.

I think you're right about Pride. I think there needs to be sliiiightly more twang there. *Needs more cowbell!* :)

Sure...twang more and sing lighter if you want. What I'm finding is that this whole business of singing is actually WAY MORE COMPLICATED than anyone wants to admit. Sure you can learn the basic recipe...but Jesus...there are about 1000 variations on that recipe.

The good news is, once you get familiar with the "basics," you can really experiment to find "your voice."

If you don't mind I'll tell my teacher the 'twang' idea... Seems the biggest key to teaching voice is communication. The twang idea resonated immediately with me...

Glad it helped...although I need to be taking tips from you :) Crazy pipes man!

Sorry, analog, I got this thread confused with another thread where I posted my own take on Pride. I don't think your take needs more twang, although a cowbell wouldn't hurt ;) I really liked your take on that song and that single post of yours has actually been helpful for me lately.
