Her technique is great but not perfect. I kind of know what you mean - she is not always as "loose" or relaxed as she could be, but this is a fine point. Her mom is an opera singer, but I don't think Mariah every studied voice formally.

Come on guys ,how can you say that kind of things. She have an amazing technique, listen to the whole song here:

She go from breathy to clear to flasetto to head voice to full voice to whistle whatever you want, you can really hear she's singing what she wants when she wants...

Don't mix up what you call bad technique and stylistic choices. Maria is more a belter but not because of lack of technique. She's more into soul kind of singing. And above all she's so expressive in her singing....

Saying she's just an average singer is really too much too read. Just take one of her song, sing it , post it here and we will discuss it lol ;-)

Some people consider her to be the best female pop singer of all time so no, I don't think she's average, but I'm sure you can find some performances where she's a bit tense. But I don't think she was tense at the peek of her career.

Her voice is leaking air all over the place

from wikipedia, but ive read that interview to, but i cant seam to find it now.

"Mariah Carey, credited with a 5-octave vocal range and known for her extensive use of the whistle register (the highest human vocal register) divulged in a recent magazine interview that she has had vocal nodules since she was a little girl."

Video.....WOW...Lara is quite the vocalist. She is Celine Dion with FEELING. Very good technique and very good control. Knows every second what sound she is going to produce. Feels the song more in the beginning but wonderful singing. Another French singer conquers the world!!! ;) She is NOT screaming in my opinion. There is no screechiness there...she is also in full voice the whole time...or neutral I guess in some circles. Powerful.....and a master at her craft. She has rehearsed ALOT!

I have never heard of her ...and I am thankful that you have brought her to my attention. thanks for that!

Mariah carey has never sung with a good vocal technique. She always sang pushy and you can hear over the years that her voice got more worse and worse. According to an interview (which somebody else told me about it), she said she's scared to be the next Julie Andrews. Don't ask my why :O

I don't know all of Mariah's work, but she could easily make any untrained ear in the world believe that she is one of the best definitions of good vocal technique. She does have some good technical aspects, but overall I do agree that there's something pushed about her voice, and it became hundred times more noticeable lately, since her voice just can't keep up with her bad habits and nodules anymore and is weaker, breathier and cracking. But the thing that really bothers me with her is how uncomfortable she seems when she's performing live. Sometimes I see her simply standing in one single spot, barely showing any emotion other than "God, how will the next note be?".

On the other hand, Lara Fabian is one of my favourite singers, emotionally and technically, and I'm glad that she was brought to the table. Her voice is really balanced to my ears; even when she's not singing as loud as it may seem, there's quite some power coming through (reverb and all of that stuff certainly helps, sure). Here's a recent acoustic performance of that same song:

thanks michelle, i get a thrill out of getting folks to hear other vocalists.

i think the u.s music industry put her on the back burner, a.k.a. "the shelf"

here's her famous hit in the u.s i'm sure you'll recognize:

she is so hot!

i personally think they stopped promoting her because she would have seriously interuppted the profits that they were reaping from celene dion!!!! dion is great, but fabian is just as good, multi-lingual as beautiful to boot.

they did a similar thing to that guy that people were mixing up with elvis presley, terry stafford:

that poor basterd didn't have a chance!!!

when our record company was working with us, we got "shelved" because we wouldn't let them change our keyboard player.

Well,

I have two words to say:

"Don't judge" :)

martin,

right on! i also say please don't judge...

folks, she gave us some awesome sounding stylistic masterpieces, and if she put "correct technique" to the sidelines to do it, i still respect her and apprecaite her gift.

and their gifts....

cornell

joplin

mercury

to name just a few...even the best trained opera stars can experience problems or setbacks. i remember my personel issue where i lost my high range and had no idea wh till i realized it was acid reflux.

:D Can't really comment in a technical way, but I really do not appreciate this particular vocal style. This style I think you either love a lot or don't. I believe that she has a powerful voice and a good range, but, she turns me off. I also suspect a lot of vocal processing went on in the vid Josual posted.

thank you Videohere for posting links to the Lara vid and the Terry Stafford vid. Lara appeals to me far more than Mariah. Shame how the labels can do that to an artist.
