kalapoka
Dear Everyone, I was wondering while doing vocal exercises, should I be using a mic or not? This is because I have seen that while climbing towards the upper notes, I am adding more and more volume, which ultimately tires my voice out and which i read somewhere, is not a very good idea. Using a mic helps address this problem, and also it gives you a head start in getting used to the mic and mic stand (I am guitarist for 15 years, and the mic stand is like a hot girl I am trying to get acquainted to now ). What are your opinions? Hoping the gurus here also shares their feedback! Thanks for reading! Fahim
Martin H
kalapoka, It's quite simple. Your practice routines should reflect the live situation as much as possible! So yes, practice with a mic- And if you are sitting down in a live situation you should practice sitting down as well, and if you play guitar while singing you should practice that as well etc. :)
VideoHere
i prefer to practise vocal exercises un-mic'd, songs mic'd. just a personal preference.
Administrator Robert Lunte Posted March 31, 2010 Administrator Share Posted March 31, 2010 I agree with Martin... by all means... practice amplified, with a mic! This is one of the reasons why you are getting too "pushy" perhaps as you get higher in your voice on your workouts... practicing with a mic allows you to sing with coordination and grace... it helps to prevent the singer from getting pushy. Also, with amplification, you can hear your overtones better... and to Martin's point, practice for the 21st Century, not the 16th... use the technology that we have available to us these days to make life easier! People are blowing out their voices practicing extreme singing scales with no amplification. Training with amplification is something that The Vocalist Studio has pioneered and it has been a huge benefit to my students. www.thevocaliststudio.com/trainonastage Also, one of TMV's new partners is VocoPro. Check them out! http://www.themodernvocalist.com/profile/VocoPro We are partnering with VocoPro because they built practice amplifiers for Singers! I have one and its awesome, I love the thing... great for students to practice with and great for writing your songs. And they have seperate volume controls for the vocals vs the bed tracks/scales, built in DSP effects and it takes headphones so you can still practice amplified without bothering your neighbors. Check out the "HERO-RV" system... Refresh your browser until you see their banner ad at the top of this page... Hope this helps... we got ya covered here at TMV. 8 ^ )

I finally borrowed a SM58 from a vocalist friend and gave it a go, and it was AAAWWESOME! I was not straining, not pushing, and finally starting to accept and actually appreciate the strange sound that comes out of the speakers as my own voice YIPPIE! sorry for being too happy, i had a great practice session last night!!! Checked out the Vocopro systems as well, and they look good! Definitely on my wish list. and Robert, you truly have us covered here in TMV. TMV is actually one of my very few support systems as I am going through the BIG change of going from a powerful guitarist to a singer...me and god knows I need the support and encouragement and knowledge that I am getting from here. TMV ROCKS! Fahim www.amfahim.com
