Hanalei
I was told the other day that, "You have personality in your voice and that's more important..." What exactly does that mean?
Felipe Carvalho
Hana, thats a very small piece of information to work from lol I would use the word to refer to the quality that, when someone hear you singing, they immediately say "oh, thats Hanalei singing". But we dont know how the person who said that thinks, and, "more important" than what exactly?
Hanalei
In that particular sentence they were complaining about how people are always trying to sing, for example, Carrie Underwood songs like Carrie Underwood. They were saying that personality is more important than sounding like anyone in particular (which I wasn't trying to do, so I'm not sure if that comment was directed at me or not.) ;)
Felipe Carvalho
I see Hanalei. Totally agree. There is a looong way between capturing the musical elements used by an artist to do an interpretation, and doing a mimic to try to sound like the person. Hanalei
So personality is just when your voice is very easily recognized? I usually recognize voices pretty well if they're someone I listen to a lot... who would be a few examples of people with less personality and a few with more? MDEW
In my opinion PERSONALITY means the total package, The way you stand, sing, react to the audience. You are unique. Personality in your voice could also mean that you sound sincere. That you are singing from your own experience, conveying the song/story in a way that is believable. Felipe Carvalho
Hanalei these definitions are way too personal, Id rather not get into this kind of arguments linking other artists. To me the perfect example is a comedian that you like mimicing a singer. He is copying accents and details that have nothing to do with music, and the other way around, is a singer that you like doing a cover of another song, using his own resources and retainning the ideas of the original song. Hanalei
Gotcha. That makes sense. :)
