Who is a "natural singer"?

The type of singers I envy the most are not those who can only sing extremely high notes but those who can sing extremely high notes and amazingly low notes beating you in terms of range by all standards. Perhaps my all time favorite vocalist is this guy called Micah Stampley, a gosple musician. I needn't say much, just watch this clip of him singing one of his tunes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5kN2gxio2Y. Funny thing is that he's had no vocal training whatsoever (

) dude can singer a chesty F5 and has a head voice topping up to a soprano D6 (all though I believe he can go much higher cuz he hits that D6 with ease) and very low to the bass range probably C2 or even lower!! And he's a natural!! Oh dear nature lol why couldn't it have been me :P:P ... You can watch more clips of him, youtube, Micah Stampley. Ok so guys which other naturally taleted vocalist do you know? I mean those without training yet ca sing pretty high? Who are natural singers in fact? Is it that they pick up of vocal techniques naturally or the shaping of their tract makes them singer higher or what? Again how will you classify him, a base, tenor, auto or soprano? Comment guys

You don't classify that guy...holy $&*#...

I haven't seen anyone as natural as this guy.

You know, he does have the spiritual element. Which is mental. And singing is mental. I think a lot of his "gift" must come from having the right mindset, that he gets as an indirect result of being in tune with his God.

Also from starting at such an early age and developing so much experience.

Lastly, "no formal training" doesn't necessarily mean "no training"

Oh one more thing...he does mention in the interview that he learned from listening to the greats...that is differently a form of training.

It's a combination of all of that.

I went to my first day working at a butcher shop... one of the butchers (been there for 5 years +) started humming a ne-yo song and singing it as it played on the radio. He was going into m2 without thinking about it... no breaking or flipping.... a butcher singing ne-yo songs almost effortlessly whereas me a student of TVS who has to work hard to negotiate passaggio to even hit those notes.

You can almost tell he was a "natural" singer. Natural singers don't discriminate against their voices... they know instinctively that PART of having a good tone is easy, relaxed, and focused production.

Natural singers... just sing. And most of all... natural singers do not LIMIT themselves. Did the butcher at my work think he was going into m2 and twanging and this and that?

Here's a better question.... why was a butcher at my work singing r&b and pop songs so easily as he was "butchering" lol?

Easy... he LOVES singing. When you love something that much you instinctively become better at it... that is something nearly every natural has... without it every book and every technique becomes useless.

Btw.... HUMMING is f*#cking great. Naturals do it without even realizing ;)

Funny note: I was actually about to pass out because of working so hard in unfamiliar conditions (surrounded by raw meat) and this guy... was singing! lol

When you are doing something else like Butchering you are not worried about the Key that you are singing in. You do not try to sing in the exact key that you hear on the radio. You will sing in a key that is in your range and comfortable. You are not trying to project and be heard by 600 people at the Met.

We have a harder time with it because we are trying to be heard. We are looking for a particular sound and in the same key that you hear it on the radio.

@MDEW the need to sound good often hinders our progress. Ironic don't you think?

When I try to sound like MJ I just break and flip... but when I just "make sound" the MJ notes flourish as if they came from nowhere.

This is the point where i would join in if I knew the song.

I don't know how much focus the job requires but if you feel you can safely multitask I would recommend you give it a try

Was he singing really quiet? That for me takes near zero thought. You just bridge super early and the passaggio disappears.

Wow this guy is AMAZING!

A lot of people like this grew up singing in church. So I guess that is their training. Two other amazing examples are Whitney Houston and R Kelly. When you've been singing for your whole life and surrounded by other great singers I'm sure they're in the right environment to pick up positive habits through osmosis/informal teaching.

So brother Phil, you believe they naturally learn vocal techniques that we pay Lunte, Tamplin etc to learn? (that's so unfair to some of us hehehe :D:D) I'd believe that though. Again do you think it's got to do with natural vocal tract shaping/size? You don't see the distinction between this guys head voice and chest voice, it blends all the way to us high as we wants. That's freaking AMAZING!!!

TONEX!!! he is another of my favorite, just didn't put him on here to see if someone knew him. I don't know if he's natural though cuz I've never watched clips of him talking about that. DAMN! If I had that RANGE, I'd never shut up, I'd be disturbing people everywhere even at work :lol::lol::lol:

They say the human voice can imitate almost any sound in nature.

Might be a survival thing. I think most naturals are just very in-tune with their voices... to a point where they genuinely believe it's from God.

@Phil yes most natural's speaking voices HELP their singing voice not hinder it. Why do yo think MJ spoke the way he spoke? His actual speaking voice was nearly an octave deeper.... you might find clips ;)

The top 3 most underlooked things for me are head voice, support, AND speaking voice flexibility. But that's just me :)

It's like going to the gym. These guys have been going to the "gym" since childhood. Even though they dont know much about training they are there everyday. Most guys here read about the "gym" and throws in a bicepcurl once in a week.

Ive been the same, nowdays i sing and train everyday :)

Not only have "Natural" singers been singing since childhood but they also have a tendency to get together with others of their age and practice singing harmonies and actually working out the songs. Helping each other out when things go wrong or letting each other know when they sound good.

So in a sense they are training. Not formal training but they are training.

My view on the Gospel singers is the mind set. Whatch any Southern Baptist Preacher or even the TV evangelists. Once they get in the "Spirit" they will go into a "Singing/Speaking" mode almost like a trance. If you do not think that they are using diaphramatic breathing and support you are mistaken. A natural appoggio.

so much of the "so called natural singer " is mental...attitudinal...tremendous passion.

a burning desire within to excel, never accepting complacency....a resiliency...

but we, as the audience see the results (never static) of many years of hard work, (which may only be our perception) but it's not hard work to them because they love it so much.

and even with all of those attributes, the acceptance that there will always be somebody better than you.

never give up!!!

One of my bosses plays his ipod station while doing invoicing.

So, it's not surprising to hear "Six Feet from the Edge" by Creed while sending someone a bill for a full install, with the boss singing.

Then, the other day, we were both singing along with the Cult and realized that Ian Astbury sounds like the cartoon character Marvin the Martian.

And my boss has good pitch control and, as far as I know, no training. And his singing voice reminds me a little of Bon Scott. So, get that image in your head. Bon Scott covering songs by Creed.
